There is also another thing to consider when setting pickup height. Some pickups have a very short adjustment range where they go from weak sauce no power to total distorted ass. Thats why a lot of people shy away from active pickups. They set them too close and can't get the cleaner sounds they may want.
Height is not in my mind determined by a spacing but the sound that they produce. Ever play a guitar that has AWESOME pickups but you can't get any pinch harmonics? Or sounds totally crappy when trying to play clean? Thats because someone set them up by "Power levels" and not the sound they reproduce. Sometimes setting a pickup with weak over all volume gives the best sound reproduction. Volume can always be controlled by the amplifiers.

It's a pleasure. It's pretty frustrating when they break but thankfully easy to replace.

Perfect thank you. Just what I needed to know. I've a hofner 500/1 vintage 63. Manufactured in 2004. Beautiful

How would you describe the overall neck thickness or girth on your v63? I'm familiar with the fuller necks of the Cavern models and wondering how the 63 models might be in comparison.

Can you please make a video about how to know if you need a neck reset on a Hofner? And a separate video about truss rod adjustment on the Hofner would be appreciated as well. Thanks!

Here's my full guitar setup video (I don't have a bass one yet). It's essentially exactly the same process except the strings on a bass could be set slightly higher. Although saying that, with a hofner you could set the sttings as low as a guitar and probably get away with it. I hope this answers your question about the neck and truss rod. I do aim to make a separate bass setup video, and a truss rod one soon. ua-cam.com/video/fvD-qsM3piQ/v-deo.html

hello, great video .thank you. I bought a 2006 Hofner Deluxe about a year ago. Fantastic bass . No complaints. I am not sure how old the strings are ,since I bought it used. I am planning to take it to someone for a set up. I have read that Hofner H113 B bass flat wounds are good. 45-95. Thats what I am going to put on it. Your video about the bridge setting was really good. Thanks for that one as well.

Thanks so much for watching and commenting. The bass in these videos had flat wounds on, the owner likes them. If you haven't used them before they do feel different, but personally I like that.

Planning to buy a "Cavern" edition, but would love to know how the sound differs from other models. Some have pickups closer together and the Cavern seems to be the closest. I should say I have not played a bas in 50 years, so I would class myself as a newbe (round 2)

    • @DevilAndSons

I couldn't tell you the difference. If you're on Facebook there's a great group devoted to these basses where people know them backwards. They could answer any question.

The Cavern is a great bass…as a finger player, the bottom pup is the perfect place to anchor my thumb

I am waiting for my very first Hofner contemporary and I appreciate your videos. I can not find any documentation on esoteric passive controller: I can suppose what each key/knob does but your in depth explaination would be welcome.

Hello Daniel, and to all others here...
I had a 2002 German Cavern (regrettably sold it) and I'm trying to find out how feel and shape of the current German 62 and 63 models would be in comparison against the Cavern (and the notably thinner 64 necks).
They all have listed specs of around 21mm deep at the 12th fret, and around 23/24mm deep at the 24th fret. So the differing models' necks must be based on the shape/girth of the shoulders(?).
Anyone with insight and/or in hand experience please chime in.

I have this bass i borrowed it from a friend so i could learn, he never plays it. I dont know when it was manufactured or really anything about it but whenever i play the first and second fret they rattle which makes learning very difficult. I have tried all the basic things like pressing harder on the frets my fingers are in the right spots when i play ect. I have no clue what causes it because it doesn’t happen on any of the other frets. Should i go see a professional to see if they can fix it or is it something i can fix at home?

    • @DevilAndSons

There are lots of things that could help, but step one would be a proper set up. I don't have a video on setting up a bass yet but it's more or less the same as a guitar except the string heights could all be 0.5mm higher.
Try this, I have a feeling that adjusting the truss rod could help:

Here's what thenowner of the bass said when I asked him
Pyramid Black Tape Nylon Set 648/1. Perfect for most hollow and acoustic basses for the warm donk type sound.
I'm not sure if donk is a typo or an actual description of a particular bass sound..😂

What kind of strings do you have on this bass? I've recently bought a Club Bass (made in Germany). My E strings, that comes from the Hofner farm, is not so clear. It's a little bit muddy, dead...
