  • I've discussed and am discussing in more detail some of the more significant set pieces / scenes from Maxton Hall but this video is just to express my love and appreciation of some tiny moments that I loved in the series that I think helped provide texture, colour and richness to a wonderful set of characters ... Spoilers for all of season 1.
I did not add subtitles because if you're a fan and watching this - by now you already know exactly what the characters are saying regardless of what language is on screen :D

Thank you again for your insights.
Damians micro-expressions really seem to resonate with so many people, as they do to me too.
A scene that is not endearing but very expressive (I find) is when Elaine comes up to him at the party. He looks up at her after rubbing his temple and seems so exasperated by her presence. You can read so much about his dilemma at that moment- what he‘s saying in the narration.

That's true. When I was binge-watching it for the second (and not the last 🙈) time, I noticed that he never speaks to Elaine. Not in a single scene. He always just reacts slightly annoyed when she appears. On the golf course, he doesn't even greet her. It's amazing what Damian conveys with just his facial expressions. I'm really impressed by him as an actor.
Since Maxton Hall, I've watched other movies and series with him, and he plays completely different roles each time. You would never associate him with James.

What’s interesting when rewatching their first interaction is how his demeanor changes once she calls him an asshole. He comes across as intimidating when he walks in and demands to talk to her and then doesn’t remember her name lol. He doesn’t really insult her about needing a new bag until she starts to walk away. Once she walks away though the camera zooms in on his face and it’s very subtle but you see Damian’s eye twitch. I thought that was a nice detail. He also does in it a lot in their scenes and I can’t tell if it’s Damian subconsciously doing it or a James thing.

Damian Hardung has the best microexpressions. I think I would find it hard to know what he is genuinely thinking because he seems to be able to completely lose himself in a role and a character. Only six episodes of Maxton Hall and he changes soooooooooooo much from the James we see at the beginning to the James we see at the end. If we charted them all - it would be dramatic. :D

Another great video! This is because of these little details that James and Ruby's relationship doesn't feel rushed! There are so many nuances in their scenes and in their acting!!! Their faces are so expressive!!!
And of course, Alistair is a darling!!!

I think you've actually summed up perfectly why even though we only have 6 episodes, it doesn't seem rushed that they get together. We experience a lot through their nuanced acting - which includes a wide range of facial expressions :D

One of my favorite little scenes is when Lydia talks to James at school and tells him that their father has noticed his crush on Ruby and that he should be more careful. The way James turns around and says ‚Lydia’. 😅 it‘s so typical of how a brother would talk to his sister - really funny. And the moment when Ruby asks him if he often sells his body, and he tells her, 'Oh, I didn't want to take any money, I know you're short on cash!‘ He says it so ironically, with a slightly annoyed, bored look on his face
-I had to laugh out loud.
And of course the moment when she tells him that she can’t afford to be seen with him. His look afterwards? 😂 Kind of like why can’t you afford it? If anything, it should be the other way around! After all, EVERYONE wants to be associated with him.

These are so great. It has been a long time since I’ve seen a show where the filming really enhances the show. I mean shows are done well but there are so many little tiny features in this series that really drew me to it. Another scene I like is the one where James and Alastair are at a party and Alastair is starting to see the effect Ruby has on James and he on her. He sees that Ruby is challenging James like no one else has.

Thank you again for sharing your thoughts. That is one of the reasons the show is so great in my opinion. There are so many beautiful big and small moments, and all of them so well-acted. I agree with all the moments you chose. Another one for me is in Oxford when Ruby is called to one of the interviews, and on her way passes James who takes her hand and wishes her good luck. So beautiful and touching.

"Warte, warte" is what grandparents or parents would say to you when they're really angry with a child

I agree with all the little moments you chose to talk about! Another moment I love is when they get dressed up at the showroom and she looks at herself in the mirror, and James comes over and does this little angled 360 degree turn right next to her as if they're dancing. It was so cute. I especially love the vate vate part where he grabs her hand, it means wait but in german it sounds like there is so much more meaning to it. I love Alistair too. He sees right though James. I love the oxford scene where the two of them are at the steps of a building and Alistair went on about how he should have never let Kesh go, and James replied, Maybe you didn't have a choice, and Alistair said everyone has a choice! I love Ruby's sister Ember too...especially the scene where Ruby asks if she would be interested in making the dress, and she replied, "never ever"...even though it was English, it just sounded so funny because her german accent gave the meaning so much more emphasis. Now I want to learn german. I think the language sounds beautiful.

I' learned German in high school and now study it casually in duolingo and memrise. Maxton Hall has been a tonne of help to motivate me more :D And as to Ember - I love her, too. I want to do a separate video on Ruby's family because I LOVE them a lot

I really like the conversations between James and Alistair too. Especially the one on the steps in Oxford. I think it’s moments like these that make the series so special. The two of them have such a natural dynamic. Just conversations between friends.

@@koalabear6089 That would be awesome. I love the difference between James' family and Ruby;s. There is so much love in Ruby's family but not in James and I think that is what helps Ruby be able to understand James better as she sees how living int he family that he does has made him do the awful arrogant things he does and she is able to get past that to see that he really is a boy standing in front of a girl wanting to be loved for himself.

The "warte, warte" (wait) is actually overly bossy, when we say that on German 😅

One scene that wasn’t covered here that I absolutely loved was when Sutton told Ruby and James that Lexington wanted to see both of them, James turned to Ruby and waggled his eyebrows at her. I don’t think that moment gets near enough attention, but it’s another moment where Damian’s wordless acting is perfection.

All people say that James is jealous when he saw Alistair with Ruby, but in that point of the story he didn't like her in my opinion. And in the book he only says "Stay away from my friends, Ruby" and anything else. It didn't explain what James felt when he saw them talking

    • @KutsAnka
      @KutsAnka 17 днів тому +8

I think he was afraid that Ruby is plotting to somehow start spreading rumors about Lydia through the friends group. Or use such connection to his friends to do some other type of harm. From the outside, or James' perspective - nobody new Ruby's name just a cuple of days before, and now Alister is shaking hands with her. I thought he was trying to protect his circle from the mean poor girl (by the way, the impression of RUby that later Mortimer voices) who is going to do everything she can to take advantage of the situation.

It's interesting because I momentarily assumed jealousy in that moment, too because it's SUCH a tropey teenager romantic drama thing to have ... but then I thought - no he doesn't like her - he can't be jealous. Then I realised (even before I found out Alistair was gay) that essentially it's just feeding into his misapprehension that Ruby's out to get him and his family etc ... so that's why he's reacting so strongly and horribly.
