Its really unfortunate how spot on Cedric is. And its all the more depressing how much worse popular music has become in the last decade or so. Where are the pioneers?
Man, he really hit the nail on the head. I'm thankful I had a friend in high school who knew a shitload of good underground music and basically showed me all the bands that led me to my current music taste.
the mars volta are trying to now release their material on independent labels (their next album will be independent apart from USA where they have contract restrictions with Universal) I don't think they have ended up in a bad way or would have thought bad of themselves they are playing no compromise music that is clever and doesnt spoon feed anyone. Bands can still be major label and maintain counter-culture values (Rage Against the Machine)
Led Zeppelin: that is the band that got a good label, and did REAL underground. . . the 70s, i think, it was the last decade where musicians had the freedom to do whatever they wanted. if it wasnt for Van Halen's manager, Eruption wouldnt be at our hearing pleasure :)
Sliced Bread is really the best thing. Imagine having to slice bread before you make a sandwich. I don't think I could live in a world that way. Anyway, I'm seeing these guys tomorrow in Dallas and I am SO fucking excited
Wow, i was deciding whether to completely go off of social media or not, and I think this provides me information by which to navigate it. Though it's a corrupt system, it still controls the airwaves, so it's important to put the more intelligent content out there possible.
Very true, but as I like to say "better to conform to something that is good and that you like rather than conform to something bad for the sake of being cool" Personally I think Cedric makes a very good point in this video.
There is more choice today as to what to listen to because bands are advertising on the internet. But the problem with that is the market gets over saturated with bands and that makes people apathetic to liking them or wanting to buy their record as opposed to just stealing it.
I love political music and bands such as Midnight Oil and At The Drive-In, amongst many others. Cedric Bixler Zavala is obviously a smart man, as many have already said, and he is putting his point of view forward, a point of view that some minorities may have or those who are too afraid to speak out.
My god, in my honest opinion, ATDI was one of the most down to earth and realistic bands to come around for quite some time. I do listen to a lot of punk, but my favorite punk band by far is Lagwagon, simply because of their realistic views, not political or movement based.
that is so weird!!! the fact i digged for ATDI because i first listen to sparta a couple of hours ago, this song called cut the ribbon and i looked up the lyrics, and in the comment section it talked about mars volta. Thought they were fucking great. Then i found out that they were together. FUCKING AWESOME! dude in hours i found out about a great fucking band that kicks ass, thanks to the new way of digging for music. UA-cam
I've heard that from a lot of people and I might go check them out. I've heard one or two ATDI songs and I think you're probably right, but I'd have to hear more before I form an opinion.
the mars volta, at the drive-in, easily one of many fav. bands i have, but come on, no one who represents complete freedom in music during his time, WTF, NEUROSIS
I know but sometimes I look around and that is what I see from some people. I watched it again and I agree with what you are saying. The industry need to look at what people say on the web about bands. The underground cannot afford to be ignored too much longer or they might just go broke. I think that the real people who go broke are the listeners who never get to hear really different bands though. But that's just my opinion.
Punk rock had a hardcore working class base. The Minutemen, Minor Threat, Black Flag, those guys all had 9-5's. After work they weren't their job though.
Everything you just said is exactly how I view Cedric and Omar. Technical skill, innovation and integrity, imo, sums up TMV. And, the various members of the band are into many other artistic avenues. Omar draws and paints. Cedric plays many instruments and quite a few members of the band skateboard. Honestly, I don't care about music classifications, but I just thought the point you were trying to make is a bit backwards.
I generally agree with everything this guy says but I'm from the Midwest surrounded by great cities and whenever somebody says Middle America they immediately are referring to the Midwest. Let's not forget one of the greatest rock and roll cities in the world is in the Midwest.
@mikeymoxon i think you're right... When a person (like me) only listens to rock oriented stuff they dont see the whole spectrum of music, which does include good computer made music.
I know it's an At The Drive-In song, but I don't know which one. My guess is that it'll probably be One-Armed Scissor, cause that seems to be the most well known of their songs.
@divinegrinder that show was at a music festival most people were probably there to see limp bizkit which some girl was killed when limp bizkit was playing there set! at the drive in at that time people that listen to them were people that wern't mainstream music listeners... most people there probably didn't even know who at the drive in was! most bands woundn't yell at people watching them because they fame and money!
the sam way when he made this video.... they made this when they were in the mars volta.. i dont think it would change in the matter of a few years. the radio rock is still the same.
@ColoredPig i kinda agree with u.. but then again i like techno.. then again i like dubstep.. i like industrial black metal.. ect ect.. .all with "computer type sounds" Except i dont watch tv.. and i dont get my music from the tv either..i dont even have cable.. lol only cable internet

people think too much about the music they listen to. my rule to any music, or clothes, or style choices are this: if i like it, i buy it. shove anything else out of your mind. thats all it should be about.

His music's been shit since ATDI broke up.
nope. His own songs are awesome. No one is 19 forever.
He's a fucking junkie who can't make music anymore.

Holy shit, it’s incredibly rare to be recommended a video this old. This vid came out when UA-cam was pretty much in its infancy.

What other bands like at the drive in do you like? any much later 2000 bands or late 90s bands like lifetime, far or thursday.
Your only take away from this was "some music is bad"?

Thank you for demonstrating perfectly my point.
this guy is rad, and the mars volta is a fucking tight band. i give this 5 stars

I just love Mars Volta a little bit more than I did before.

They also toured with RHCP cause John Frusciante and Omar are good friends. John actually plays alot of the guitar on their more recent records
selling out is not being comercial, its selling your attitude and your music
Punk rock had a hardcore working class base. The Minutemen, Minor Threat, Black Flag, those guys all had 9-5's. After work they weren't their job though.
lol, i saw a clip where marsy came on stage with the lights off and said 'hello...we're mudvayne...' haha :]
wow.
that is exactly how i feel.
Yes...he does speak the truth
Cedric's a cool guy. It's scary how everything he said was true, only now it's still true only worse to how it was then.
Music reaches more (young) people than politicians do.
