  • In 2016 Denmark was named the Happiest Country on Earth, thanks to its residents' emphasis on work-life balance, healthcare, education, and a homegrown quality known as "hygge." Faith Salie reports on the measures used to determine a society's level of happiness.

At the end of the day, the principle of living in Denmark is:
Danes do not live to work, they work to live.
Family and friend are always more important that anything else.
What's the point of being wealthy if you do not have a loving base of family and friends?

He is implying that Americans do not.
He is explaining why Danes are happier than other countries.
Mainly he is comparing to Americans because the US is the wealthiest country, and because we work more days, longer hours, and take fewer vacations.

There's a unfortunate notion in the US that if you make a lot of money, your life should be more awesome. Unfortunately, money doesn't really help all that much in that department.

Not after you factor in taxes and their high cost of living. Americans have more disposable income and our money has a higher purchasing power.

@@RedRider1600 no they don't. only a small percentage of Americans make more than Danes. That's why you should not look at overall averages but per capita.

money only helps to a certain extent. That is, once you make enough to satisfy all your needs and most of your wants, then $$$ ceases to make u happy. If I'm single and make $80k and live in an affordable city, then doubling my salary isn't going to do much for increasing my happiness. That's why so many rich people (take a look at the White House "leader") are miserable people.

Disregard traffic congestion, materialism will only increase happiness to a certain level. Once the materialism plateau is reached, then good health, lifestyle, family, friends, and fun things to do are what keeps us happy. Although everyone's definition of what's fun could be different.

"How to measure a happy nation"???
I am still awaiting the answer. How is happiness measured in "free healthcare" and "free education". Isn't happiness a relative and personal matter? What makes America great is the individual pursues his or her own happiness. Besides, Denmark like many European countries, especially Nordic countries, can afford to have a "social democracy", because the United States funds predominantly their military. I call bullshit on this report. I hope that, Americans do so as well.

Why are Latin Americans so incised? Germany, China and Greece don't care that outsiders don't call their nations Deutschland, Zhongguo and Hellas respectively. You are totally free to call any country whatever you desire. You can call America, "Yucky" if you want.

What the video doesn't say is Denmark is a pretty homogeneous country, with very strict immigration laws and where everybody is expected to behave in a certain way. Ever heard of famous artists, successful companies or innovative inventions coming from Denmark? This is not really a creative country, in my opinion. This is not the place to stand out.

    • @JRSnyderJrAZ

No...Jante Law rules and has a very negative downside. For a taste of it go to the Upper Midwest in the US and try stepping out of the box in Minnesota or Wisconsin and you'll understand Denmark (and Scandinavian culture). I don't think most Americans would struggle with socialism but the frowning upon of creativity and individualism. "I struggle with that" the American woman says in this piece. If you're not willing to suppress yourself then this is not a happy place.

@gjaddajg Quite right... None of the countries of the EU are 'a socialist country'. But, to realise that, you have to take some time and look at our democratic democracies (in stead of the highly corrupt democracy they have in the USA) and most citizens of the USA can't do that. All they know, are their own prejudices.
