Some of your photos may be showing it, but I don't think your script mentions it. The 340 is one of the best aircraft for flights to Antarctica. It is important for keeping the research stations supplied. You definitely don't want a twinjet on those flights, so it will be a tough job to find a replacement when the 340 retires.
Just flew on one Munich to Newark last week on Lufthansa. Very pleased with and it occured to me that I hadn't flown in a 4 engine Jet in quite some time. Some big planes there in Munich. Loved the lower deck Restrooms. Saw a 747 and A-380 boarding at same time as mine on either side of me. Nice to see some big ass 4 engined jets for a change !!!
Admiring American here. I think the magisterial A340-600 has been the most beautiful airliner to paint the skies. On other hand, the new 777X may eclipse her beauty in 2025 when it begins service. 🙌🏽👀
I recently flew on the A340-300 thats operated by Surinam Airways, from PBM to AMS. It was 9 hour flight but the aircraft handled it really well. The aircrafts registration is PZ-TCW, for those interested. Also to note that KLM also operates the same route with a B777-300er. So Surinam Airways and KLM are the only none stop flights you can take out of PBM to AMS vice versa.
I have used the 340 many times from london to manila with a stop at kuait and had no fault with it and even the food was good but changed from them and used qatar and emerates of late would love to go back to 340 but have not tried the 350 yet.
Flew the A340-300 with Cathay Pacific, and Etihad A340-500/600's. The newer variant A340's were nice to fly in however can see why airlines are switching to twin jets now them being economic.
Well the German Government is already in the process of replacing the a340s. They now have 3 a350-9 in service instead. Lufthansa is replacing the a3400-300 with 787-9 on a lot of routes. Swiss is replacing their a340s with a350s in the coming years.
😮We expect years and years of second life in freight or fire/oil spill for the A340'e, but the real life issue is: all FBW Airbus and especially this electronics are expendable like any current VW or Ford Focus. Recently, an Embraer 190 was broken up less than 5 years old, the A318s did not survive and the 787s cannot be converted into freighters due to their carbon fiber sandwich. This is the last generation like 777s after 1990 that can still be repurposed as workhorses.😢
I've flown on the A340-600 and the A340-300. Both with Lufthansa. My love for the 600 is tremendous, possibly because it was the first airplane on which I crossed the Atlantic, but also it's truly beautiful.
I know what you mean. Qatar's A340-600 was the plane I travelled on during my first trip to Qatar/Thailand in 2009. I was so sad when they decided to scrap it, but ironically the exact A340-600 I travelled on (A7-AGD) was being scrapped just a few miles from my parents' house at Cotswold Airport. So I did some research, contacted the company and they cut a 3-window cutting for me, which I eventually plan to hang up somewhere and put photos in the windows. It's pretty huge, and my friends and family think I'm crazy, but the memories that aircraft helped enable mean a lot to me... and, it's also the most beautiful aircraft to fly in the past few decades. I feel like I should take a Lufthansa A346 flight soon before that also disappears - it seems like it's about the only accessible A346 operator left.
Really hoping to catch one of those Lufthansa flights out of San Diego before they inevitably switch to A350's. I remember one time I saw the BA 747 land as a kid, it's amazing that they can manage to land a quadjet there at all.
Amazing that as doggy as they are, the A343s are still in use in many places. On the other hand the A346s are real beasts. I love those and hope they will stay in use for a while longer. They're large and powerful.
Good to see that there are still reasonable numbers of 340s still in service but for most enthusiasts it's only the European operators than offer a chance to fly on what is one of the most stunning passenger aircraft of all time (340-600) I was fortunate to fly on a Vrgin 346 from Washington DC to LHR it was a late evening departure and from memory was carrying under 70 passengers. It was very sad to see Virgin retiring their fleet, watching their 346s landing at Heathrow was truly memorable that long smooth fuselage with massive wing span with undersized engines certainly was a incredible sight. Once again another Airbus aircraft that never saw service with any American operator or British Airways. I hope that Lufthansa continues to operate the time for as long as possible the new Lufthansa livery certainly suits the 340 .

Pretty dated plane, but in great shape and with the new Premium Economy section installed. Even though it can't hide its age. Return on an A350-900 from Lufthansa. In all reality no comparison from the hard product - soft product is a different story.
I have flown on two Mahan Air A340s, a -300 from Moscow to Tehran and a -600 from Munich to Tehran. I believe these planes are ex-Lufthansa A340s and the cabins are incredibly comfortable. I was flying economy on both planes but both had first and business class segments, as well as offering a bar (that doesn't offer any alcoholic drinks). They are some of the nicest planes flying in Iran today considering the majority of Iranian carriers are still flying old outdated McDonnell Douglases and Boeings.
My analysis reveal as of February 2023, at least 130 A340s are still operational across 4 variants : 8 Airbus A340-200 67 Airbus A340-300 19 Airbus A340-500 and 36 Airbus A340-600
What I find fascinating about the A340 is how cheap it is. Based on a sale by the Thai flag carrier in late 2022, the market value of an A340 appears to be around $2 million a piece. That's less than 1% of the sticker price of a brand new 787 or A350. Even though the fuel burn is much higher than a new 787 or A350, continuing to fly the jets appears at first sight to possibly make some sense for Lufthansa and Swiss, as it requires less capital in the near term and doesn't include the hefty depreciation they would incur on a new airplane.
There are up to 6 cargo flights from Bournemouth (BOH) England, flying non-stop to Chengdu (CTU) China by European Cargo, using 2 of its fleet of A340-600 in late August 2023. It can be quicker to get air freight through Bournemouth, rather than larger cargo hub airports. So could it be a new lease of life for these quad jets?
Occasionally I see and hear one of European Cargo's A340-600's flying over my house in Southampton on its approach to Bournemouth airport. I must say that they not only look beautiful but they have a nice distinctive engine sound too. I think they probably have the Rolls Royce Trent engines. Please correct me if I'm wrong. 🙂

The Airbuses have fitted RR Trent RB211 556A2-61 ON REG G-ECLM The Rolls-Royce RB211 Trent 556A2-61 is a three spool, axial flow, high bypass ratio turbofan. and and RB211. 556-61 engines on reg G-ECLB is a Rolls-Royce Trent 500 is a high-bypass turbofan. I hope this may help a bit.
Just saw a Lufthansa A340-300 at DEN this afternoon. Was shocked to see it. Originally I though huh A330-300 to Denver, I thought they were using a 747. But then I noticed it was a A340-300. Also BA is now using the 787-10 to Denver.
The A340 was never the sexy poster child, but what a workhorse. Long range travel where it excelled, 30 years plus service. What an accomplishment ! It's like the quite employee never causing any problems at the workplace and doing all the hard job.
It would be interesting for EADS EFW in Dresden or IAI Israel, Alenia Italiana or ST Aerospace to seriously think about offering the 500Freighterliner or the 600 for the emerging market in China, the Middle East and India, since the RR Trent engines are still new and their consumption compared to the 747-400F is overpowering in the economy. They are depreciated in the market and the cells are semi new. A thought that needs the most certainly possible economic study.😊
I flew JFK to MAN in 2018 on probably my last 747 flight. When I realized that my return to the United States would be on an Airbus, I figured it would be an A340 because… I expected a 4-engine plane! But it was Virgin and the MAN-ATL flight was on an A330. (Did Virgin even have A340s then?)
both the A340-600 HGW & A340-500 HGW wide body quad jets are beautiful aircraft . . . the stretched variants of the A340 series with it's ultra long range are best suited for high end private charter & heads of state travel . . . speaking of large cabin private jets, don't really appreciate the king size bedroom in the skies thing . . . it's a private jet for cryin out loud, agreed it's big but it's no place for a Presidential Suite . . .
I once flew the A340-6 from hongkong to Johannesburg. Very comfortable aircraft and not too noisy, I presume because of the smaller engines? Otherwise I could notice a fairly lower pitch during take off which made me think if it was really heavy or it’s about power.
Flew back in economy in a 340-300 last week on Lufthansa. It was mediocre at best. Very loud, space worth a domestic flight on American, hard seats cushions, cabin showing its age. My way to Munich in the A350 was stellar in contrast!
I've only had one opportunity to fly on an A340, a then-brand-new A340-600 with Virgin Atlantic in 2005. I would love to get a chance to revisit the A340 before they are all gone, because I remember it being a pretty cool experience.
I flew LH A340-300 back in 2012 on CGK-SIN, then continued to FRA on one of their A380s, while previous A340 that flew me from CGK, continued to MUC. Since then, i never fly A340 anymore. Although it was only short flight, but i loved it so much, so memorable. I even still keep it's boarding pass. It's cabin is relatively similar with A330, as well as comfortable..
Well since it is a European produced aircraft made from the le République du France should be giving much more appreciation credit plus of just replacing nor retiring instead really should be a much better change plus upgraded to fit the efficient calibration as oppose to it’s North Amexem counterpart like Boeing / McDonnell Douglass whose fleets like the B-737 along with the DC-10 / MD-11 having numerous problems which over here in the North Amexem continent have witness but overall in due time will like to eventually fly on a Airbus A340 soon so the Melanite brother appeal to the Lufthansa in the Schwester Föderal Republik zu Deutschland so preserved them especially for longhaul flights earthy alright!!!

The A 340 600 is one of the best I have ever flown in I flown with it operated by surname airways back in 2010 from surname to Holland almost eight hours flight but very comfortable most of my flight time are with boing 737 they don't fly as nice as the 340.
The A340 is one of the most memorable long-haul aircraft I flew on in my childhood, aside from the 777. Former operator of that quad-jet I most commonly flew on was China Eastern.
Emirates had one that flew to Lusaka Harare route. It was old and had poor cabin experience. Also it had numerous delays and mud air faults that caused emergency returns and delayed departures. Until it was replaced by Boeing 777-300
Have only used the -300. Swiss and Lufthansa. It’s a very beautiful aircraft to look at and very comfortable to fly with. Hope to fly with it very soon again. 😀
I‘ve only flewn once on the 340 and it was lovely. Just being a short flight from VIE-DUS back in 2018 operated by Eurowings, though the aircraft seemed to be leased from Brussels Airlines. Would be quite interesting if that specific plane is still flying. Designation was OO-SCW

Flew 600 14 times, 2 with Lufthansa, 6 with south African and 6 with virgin Atlantic. Flew 500 twice, once with Thai and once with Singapore.

Well since it is a European produced aircraft made from the le République du France should be giving much more appreciation credit plus of just replacing nor retiring instead really should be a much better change plus upgraded to fit the efficient calibration as oppose to it’s North Amexem counterpart like Boeing / McDonnell Douglass whose fleets like the B-737 along with the DC-10 / MD-11 having numerous problems which over here in the North Amexem continent have witness but overall in due time will like to eventually fly on a Airbus A340 soon so the Melanite brother appeal to the Lufthansa in the Schwester Föderal Republik zu Deutschland so preserved them especially for longhaul flights earthy alright!!!

The A 340 600 is one of the best I have ever flown in I flown with it operated by surname airways back in 2010 from surname to Holland almost eight hours flight but very comfortable most of my flight time are with boing 737 they don't fly as nice as the 340.
The A340 is one of the most memorable long-haul aircraft I flew on in my childhood, aside from the 777. Former operator of that quad-jet I most commonly flew on was China Eastern.

Emirates had one that flew to Lusaka Harare route. It was old and had poor cabin experience. Also it had numerous delays and mud air faults that caused emergency returns and delayed departures.

Have only used the -300. Swiss and Lufthansa. It’s a very beautiful aircraft to look at and very comfortable to fly with. Hope to fly with it very soon again. 😀

Just being a short flight from VIE-DUS back in 2018 operated by Eurowings, though the aircraft seemed to be leased from Brussels Airlines.
Would be quite interesting if that specific plane is still flying.
