Really appreciate this channel.
@brettvaughn1058 Thanks for your kind words & for watching the video. Keep wrenching 🔧 Kenny
When are you gonna start selling "You Don't Hafta Go Bananas" merch? Cups, mugs, t-shirts, hoodies,.......They'd be great!
I has been my experience that not all rotors have those "Pop off" screw holes as I call them. I'm not sure why, the few times I had them and used them; that was usually enough to remove the rotor without even having to resort to hitting the rotor with a hammer.
I've done rotors and pads myself for more than 10 years now, still I watch videos like this so that I may learn something new. In this case, you and I do brakes job pretty much the same. I used to be a "Use the new hardware" guy myself until about 6 years ago when I was working on my sister in law's breaks. Standard brake job (replaced all the old hardware with new), and when I was done and went for the test drive; squealing, squealing everywhere. I chased this and that for almost an hour trying to nail down the problem. Eventually I put the old anti-squeal clips back in out of desperation and everything went quiet.... I was floored to say the least. Now I ONLY replace the anti squeal clips if the originals are trashed beyond help.
Nice bunch of tips; only thing I would add is to check the reservoir before pushing the pistons back--don't want an overflow to ruin that "fine" paint job!😉
I love people using the same tool I use to compress calipers. I have a 60 year old Craftsman C-Clamp. Looks to be the same size as the one you used. Back in the day a caliper that looked like that would be rebuilt or replaced also, even if it wasn't leaking yet. We did this because the shop where I worked had good looking caliper blow shortly after the pads were changed. Turned out the brake fluid had eaten a hole in the cylinder we could not see, but the shop was sued because they blamed it for causing a wreck. After that SOP was rebuild (if possible,) or replace. Replace was generally cheaper and simpler.
But the customers will still bitch & moan that you’re padding the bill to increase your profit.
Another mechanic gripe: Customer’s car comes in for brake work, which you complete & customer leaves happy. A week the customer is back with what turns out to be a bum alternator. He blames your brake job! And if you don’t give him a break on the price, you lose a customer!
What's crazy is those rotors are in much better shape than what is on my son's truck. He won't listen, and thinks he's supposed to be able to operate a vehicle forever and never service it. It's pretty sad, dangerous but I get more out of talking to an oak tree 😅.
The old ones look to have a lot of meat. I guess labor wise it may be cheaper to replace.
That's MOST of the population that earns less than, say, $70k
My get up and go got up and went 😊
Kenny,
A reminder that if you’re doing both sides at once, keep a clamp on the retracted caliper and then go to the other side. This prevents the brake fluid from pushing the piston out when retracting the side you’re working on.
Also, one of my biggest pet peeves is people using cordless impacts to tighten up fasteners. Over torquing WILL HAPPEN.
Electric impacts don’t offer the same feel as pneumatic impacts.
It’s fine to just run the fastener on, then torque to specs.
If you doubt me, tighten a bolt on with your cordless impact, then go back and see how tight it really is.
Remember, too much grease on caliper pins will prevent the caliper from floating on the bracket.
I enjoy those chrome covered lugnuts that swell up and as you pull them off the chrome cap pops off!!!LOLOL Them things will make you cuss!!LOL
Most of the brake shop in MA back in 1987, will tell you to purchase the rotor and caliper (rebuild) so they can make an extra $250.00 instead of relied brake pad as advertised for $69.80 back in the late of 1980.
I was expecting a tip about the Brake Fluid. As old and as far worn as those pads were, it might be a good time to flush the fluid out through the bleed valve rather than sending the old stuff back into the master cylinder.
Agreed that's what I would do. Complete fluid flush/clean at the same time.
I enjoy watching everything you do. I don’t care if you have done a video on it yesterday. Thank you for all your work.
@stephenmeeks684 Thanks so much for watching & leaving a comment. Keep wrenching 🔧 Kenny
It's amazing how much more difficult rust makes things.
I have a similar 2002 2500hd with the 8.1 and Allison. Great truck. Don’t drive it too much!
When I used to do brakes for friends at home I would clamp the caliper and compress it before removing it. that way the pads are still in place and the caliper is secure.
Hello Mr Kenny, glad to see ya😊 Hope you and Mrs Kenny are having a wonderful weekend. 🎉yay!
Motorcraft clips usually fit perfectly
I have seen some people spray fluid film on the hub before fitting the new disc .
Change the pads at about %50 ! Your calipers will love you !
A four bananas video from WWK. Congrats on 100K sub’s!
Nice job brother Kenny. Those pads sure looked heat stresed with those cracks and the rotors had a lot of rust on them as you showed. I wonder how long the truck sat around and what were the conditions it was in. Great work and shown on the video very well. You explained everything in great detail. I love the fact that you used the phrase "You don't have to go bananas about 3 times. Keep wrenching and I'll keep watching.
Sure glad we don't have a rust issue in Az. I don't think I've ever seen front pads that cracked up on anything I've ever done...
@lowbudgetbob1155 you're lucky. I definitely wouldn't miss rust if I never dealt with it again. Keep wrenching 🔧 Kenny
Love those lug nuts. The tire shop that was to mount my new tires would not remove tires because of the lug nuts.
Good work Kenny, thanks for the tips along the way. I always seem to learn a little something.
I put the Powerstop z23 pads and rotors on my Subaru a few weeks back, so nice compared to the warped chicity china rotors that were installed previously.
I just did rotors ,pads, shoes on my Tacoma, damn near $300.00 just for the parts at Napa,Kamalaflation something else$$$$$$
Wow! Kamalaflation? She hasn't even had a chance yet, and you're already bashing...
She’s not even in office yet and you’re blaming her. Typical MAGA mentality.
@@Michael-yi4mcoh but she is the current vice president! Thus, yes it's partially her fault!
@Michael-yi4mc who would you blame Biden don't know his name, HEADBOARD Harris has called the shots all 4 yr Swallow or Spit . fool .
@@Michael-yi4mc been in office last four years, dims been in office last 12 out of 16,dilate harder, everyone knows Kamalanomics is garbage .
Yep it does get up n go, all the way to the gas station as a friend said of his
Thanks Kenny
Going good Kenny hope it's good for you as well.
That's the big one
Looks fairly simple so long as you don't go bananas and strip anything.
@robertpenny Well said 🍌🍌🍌 Keep wrenching 🔧 Kenny
I have the Lang #279 brake caliper press which I use.If the pistons do not move, replace the brake caliper
If the OEM rotor is much higher quality than aftermarket rotor (made in China) I like to have them machine it, but the cost in the US to machine the rotor is much higher than buying after market one (that much lower quality than OEM) .
I've bought rotors and pads off Rockauto, they have various quality from cheap to expensive. Some even better than factory equipment
I use the same old "C" compressor I started with 50 odd years ago as well. Living here in Ontario we deal with a bit more rust ... lol. If that unit has been sitting awhile I'm surprised those caliper pistons weren't sticking a bit. Anyway; would you suggest to the owner a brake fluid flush as well?
Easing the piston back into the caliper will let you if the caliper is sticking, and needs to be replaced.
Amazon sells C clamps.
Why can't you attach a hose to the bleeder, open the bleeder and push that DIRTY old brake fluid out of the caliper, so you've done part of the job in bleeding the brakes.
A couple of minutes longer but no dirty nasty fluid back to the master cylinder
I was always told the squealer went on the inside, does it matter at all ? 😊
Is there a need to tork the caliper bolts?
I thought squeal clips go on trailing end so they chirp? They go on leading end?🤷♂️
No antiseize between the hub and rotor?
How much pressure is too much when you're pushing a caliper piston back?
Such beefy rotors, it's too bad we don't machine them that much these days if at all.
The clock on the wall is right, twice a day.
Those rotors are toast they are one of the worst rotors I've seen I don't know how they were even stopping that big truck
Later Kenny
Yikes those are some serious rusted rotors.
Looks like a "pry driver".😅
Handier than a pocket on a shirt
Don't go bananas in Mexico
Horrible freight is another cheap option
Also known as tool abuse.
Nothing worse than a squeaky brake pad
Calipatator😅😂 🤓🤠 I'm rolling
Axle and bearing job on a Nissan Versa SV today.... Inboard brake pad, BARELY broken in, but rusty, delaminated and fell out. The entire backing was solid rust. (Receipt from Midas 2022?)
Owner says "I'm broke, can you do one side?"
