  • If you're suffering from noise in your signal chain, and you've ruled out defective leads, etc., then it could be time to consider investing in a noise gate.
    In this video, Dave explains a bit about how noise gates work and demonstrates the Sentry noise gate pedal from TC Electronic.

    Awesome info! It's nice to see this pedal demonstrated with single coils 😀 Thanks for taking the time to make this video!

    I could not eliminate the hum/hiss of my new valve preamp & valve power amp/cab sim for our recent direct to F.O.H. setup. I do play with a lot of dynamics and the noise was very unacceptable. (Yes- conditioned power, iso power, correct power, all patch cables in great shape, balanced line outs where required.......get it? This gate will not be a bandage for a hemorrhage)
    New sentry-no problems---your vid was the only one I could find with actual pertinent instructions for suggesting "plug and play!"
    Thanks!

    Try Fishman Fluence single coils. Dead silent, sound great and with the pull of your tone knob, you get a whole new set of sounds. Like having two sets of single coils in your Strat, one modern, one vintage.

  • @gmlasam

    IF you are using a passive single coil pickup, you can have all the expensive cables and have all the expensive high end power conditioners and you will still have a 60 cycle hum regardless. Noise gate is the only way to silence it, but not get rid of it. The Electro Harmonix Silencer does the job effectively at half the price of the Boss NS-2 and the this TC Sentry.

    i just bought that pedal.i run it at fx loop at evh 5153.
    1)the overall tone change a lot.the final sound turned to digital.
    2)i am playing 3 days maybe with this pedal and when i am playing the pedal turning off by power and its turning on again after 2 sec.4 more pedals sharing the 2A output and they dont turn off as the gate.
    3)really disappoint that i didnt choose the dec ii

    i never thought noise was an issue but lately i got into a heavy metal band, playing loud as hell with full gain and it became a problem. I think this pedal might be a solution.

    • @ericksousa911
      @ericksousa911 6 років тому +2

      Jesse Fournier I've been using EMGs (they show less noise than regular humbuckers), trying to stay away from my cabinet also helps mitigating feedback, and lowering the gain settings (when volume is high enough you don't really need the same gain settings when playing at home volume). With these tricks I've been avoiding using noise gate.

    • @PhatPhishGuitarStudio
      @PhatPhishGuitarStudio  Місяць тому

      The main switch on th epedal? That's just to switch it on or off. To be honest though, I (and I think most people) who use a noise gate tend to treat it as an always-on device

  • @captainhonan
    @captainhonan Місяць тому

    So if you use the four cables and I have a tuner in the first position and at the end EQ and then my distortion petals in the middle can I still use the 4 cable way with the EQ and the tuner in the chain or do I only use it for the distortion pedals only? This using it with2 cables

    • @PhatPhishGuitarStudio
      @PhatPhishGuitarStudio  Місяць тому

      In this case, using 4 cables with the Sentry I'd have the tuner in front of the Sentry, distrotion pedals in the Sentry's loop, and the EQ after the Sentry. EQ is a fbit of a funny one though, as it can go in a number of places in your signal chain depending on how you want to use it...in front of gain, after gain, or at various places in the effects loop of the amp...I really ought to get around to doing a video about EQ pedals :-) Just about the only place I wouldn;t consider it appropriate to put an EQ pedal is in the loop of the Sentry.

    according to your 2nd connection configuration at 6:25, I was wondering if it would work:
    guitar -> tuner -> OD -> distortion -> SENTRY -> marshall head -> effects loop send -> chorus/delay/vibe -> SENTRY again -> effects loop return
    I am waiting for my TC sentry to arrive, so I was not able to test it. Do you think it would work without any problem, so that I could reduce the noise coming from the guitar, pedals and the preamp?

    • @PhatPhishGuitarStudio
      @PhatPhishGuitarStudio  8 років тому

      The config's I show in the video are the ones listed in TC's own manual. The set-up you describe isn't mentioned there, so it may not work

    • @davidcarpenter9232
      @davidcarpenter9232 2 роки тому +1

      All the fun is getting it home and playing around with all those different configurations ,,, you'll find what works for you ... But I think you want to leave all your delay reverb uni-vibe stuff outside of the gated loop ,,, so it doesn't cut off the end of your trailing effects ... Great video ... Ok I see that's how you had it ... Well done 👍😊👍 ✅✅✅

      @PhatPhishGuitarStudio  4 роки тому +2

      Personally I'd probably put it between the tuner and the amp, but if I were you'd I'd experiment and see which location works best - none of the options would cause any damage, so try it.

    it works well with stacked dirt pedals?

    • @PhatPhishGuitarStudio
      @PhatPhishGuitarStudio  8 років тому +1

      I regularly use it with stacked drive and it works well. If you do something extreme, like stack a couple of drive pedals turned up high, plus a boost into the dirty channel on high gain then some noise still makes its way through, but that is a fairly extreme example.

    ive just bought a new ibanez with a coil spilt switch on it.
    high gain amp settings make horrible hiss sound that changes when i place my finger on the actual metal coil switch. is there something wrong?
    the hiss decreases when i touch the metal switch....
    bad electrics?

    • @PhatPhishGuitarStudio
      @PhatPhishGuitarStudio  8 років тому +2

      That sounds to me like it could be bad earthing. I'd expect to get a bit of noise when you split the humbucker to single coil (because you lose the humbucker effect) but if the noise is related to you actually touching the guitar, then I'd get a guitar tech to check it out. It's likely just a little bit of soldering that's needed - worse case maybe a new switch.

    When you talk about using it like an efx Loop for distortion pedals, where would other effects that normally go on the front of the amp (like Wahs, Comps, Whammy, etc) be on the chain? Should they also go into the Sentry "Loop"? Thanks!

    • @PhatPhishGuitarStudio
      @PhatPhishGuitarStudio  6 років тому

      I'd try with just the gain pedals in the Sentry's loop first, but what works best will depend on a number of factors. You won't harm anything by trying different placements in the signal chain, so experiment and see what is most effective.
      One thing I would say is that if you have a tuner pedal, put that before anything else - that guarantees that the tuner sees the cleanest signal possible direct from your guitar, minimising the risk of it getting confused by any alteration in the signal.

    • @PhatPhishGuitarStudio
