    Dano nails the young, impulsive Wilson, Cusack hits the mark as the scared, shattered Wilson. I had concerns about both but walked away knowing these guys did their homework.

    The song, 'God Only Knows", is one of the best ever written by anyone, anywhere. The bare, humble truth came right out of Brian Wilson's heart with this song. So beautiful. It always gives me chills. Thank you, Brian!

    it's too bad that Paul Dano is so underrated, he is an excellent actor.

      @Stoney-Jacksman 8 років тому +3

      +teffo96 What should be done about it? You wanna see him in every talkshow, do some Kardashian moves? I dont get why millions of people make this remark about a lot of people. He is not underrated, and yes many people are sheep anf wont probably even watch this movie. There are different layers in this world,higher art and low bullshit and a lot in between.. and some are not appreciated in their level, but Paul Dano isnt one of them, he is known and appreciated by who does.
      I wish I could spray this around the world, so everybody would stop with the tiresome cliché remarks.
      Yep..end rant.

      Well it's about people continuously saying about actors, musicians etc that they are 'underrated' and 99% of the time that isnt the case.
      Why is Paul Dano underrated? By which criteria? He is celebrated by people who like his acting, by his peers, he gets into the movies he wants etc etc. So why is he underrated? Thats why I said what I said..Since people think a person should be on every show and get loads of awards and more..for them to not say someone is underrated (and even then they will) It's a cognitive bias, thinking they are the only one who appreciates an certain artist..
      You understand now?
      Peace ;)

    • @unashamed9595
      @unashamed9595 8 років тому +8

      +Stones Jones No one thinks they are the only ones who like Paul Dano. The reason we say he's underrated is we think he does not receive the recognition he deserves and that he doesn't get put in many movies, partially through not being asked to take the role. So peace.

    • @Stoney-Jacksman
      @Stoney-Jacksman 8 років тому +1

      unashamed9595
      'We'? haha...
      What recognition should he get, that he isnt getting??
      Which movies would you have wanted him in?
      Should he be in 'many' movies ? (There arent many good movies , maybe a few a year max, wouldn't you want him to (stay) play(ing) quality roles in quality movies?)
      Isn't that partially or maybe his choice, in what movies he plays or not?
      To me this is weird, too subjective and I hear this shit about almost any artist..
      Peace.

      +Stones Jones why are you so bent out of shape? everyone here is basically in agreement... paul dano is great. Its not a bad thing to wish to see his work in more pieces that would suit his body of work. You mentioned Kardashian... no one else.. lol. Be well.

    My dad absolutely loved the Beach Boys. Saw them numerous times. I thought this would be the perfect movie to see with him when he was battling lung cancer in the spring of 2015, to get his mind off the pain. But his response when I shared the trailer with him was, "Looks sad." Sadly we never did see it together, and we lost him on July 10th, 2015. I still have never watched this, but just added it to my Watchlist playlist, because whenever I think of the Beach Boys, I think of Dad. "God only knows what I'd be without you", Dad. Thanks for 29 great years. See you on the other side

    I've just seen this movie hours ago and I'm still blown away. Seriously, this movie is a masterpiece of narrative, acting and emotion. The whole cast is terrific, but Paul Dano gives one the best performances I've seen in the whole year. For real, he was snubbed by the Oscars for There will be blood but snubbing him away would be unforgivable. He gives such a real, complex and brutally honest performance of someone alienated and haunted by his own disease but also someone naive and innocent who's manipulated. It's a character you can feel real, you feel sorry for him but also you can relate to his pain and most of all you feel so powerless. You want to save him all the time and at the same time you can see he's a genius. It's truly a depth and unique performance that cannot be missed.
    Same with Elizabeth Banks, always underrated, who makes something amazing with an "easy" role. She's not only the love interest, she gives her character a charisma and an strenght trought the whole movie wich also deserves a nomination. She really captures that feeling of trying desperatly to save someone you love, the frustation of being unable to do anything. Cusack is fantastic too, like a little, innocent boy in the body of an old, beated man.
    This movie is outstanding in so many ways, really shows what it is to isolated and misunderstood. The acting, the editing, the soundtrack...one of the best movies I've seen recently.

    I saw this in June 2015 and sat electrified in the theater...best movie of 2015. Dano literally BECOMES Brian Wilson on the screen and nails his personality in an oscar-worthy performance. Cusack is also quite good as older Brian but Paul Dano steals the show with a masterful performance. Banks, Giamatti, and Jake Abel as Mike Love were also very effective. This movie captures two periods of Brian's life with much depth and feeling and great attention to detail in the 1960's segments. Watching Brian work his musical genius in the studio while making Pet Sounds and Good Vibrations is a treat to watch. You don't have to be a Beach Boys fan to love this movie. It is a great human drama and a must-see for everyone.

    Honestly I think this is the best biopic I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot, especially of rock stars. I was initially skeptical because of the Dano/Cusack split but the director explained it in a way that seemed brilliant --- basically the "Paul Dano Brian" disappeared when he "went to bed" (had his mental breakdown and became a recluse for years), and the person who eventually emerged from the heartbreak and wreckage was a different person, symbolized by the switch to Cusack as older Brian. We all know that Dano, already a phenomenal actor at such a young age, hits a home run here, nailing every aspect of the young Brian, his walk, his slouch (he was self-conscious as he stood 6'3"), the patterns of his speech. But I have to say that Cusack does some of the very best acting of his career in this film. I had forgotten honestly that he can act with such subtlety and conviction. He gets at the "soul" of the later Brian, a man who has experienced tremendous loss, in a more quiet way than Dano, and it is also brilliant and devastating. Banks is also excellent -- she conveys a tremendous amount of strength and integrity as an ordinary woman caught up in an extraordinary story.

      Eirik W I was very pleantly surprised by all the actors, especially Evan Able as Mike. But I felt the movie was rushed near the end. One minute, the housekeeper is showing Melinda Brian's revised will (which left everything to Landy), and the next thing you know, the show's over and we get to read the basic concluding facts during the credit scenes.

    • @Wolfen443
      @Wolfen443 9 років тому +6

      I just watched it today, Cusack was not the best choice for an older Brian for sure, the rest of the cast did an excellent job. It seemed a bit rushed at the end, but oh well at least his trouble period under Landy was well reflected. At the end the credits show Wilson playing live too.

    This movie could've been a disaster with all the flash backs, & streaming consciousness, but it ran flawless like his complicated compositions. The core of Cusack, Dano, Giamatti & Banks were superb & the budding romantic innocence scenes between Cusack & Banks along with Wilson's budding visions of a songs along the way & in the studio really balanced the trauma that seemed so overwhelming. Add the fact that his songs we're soundtracks for the lives of many of us who saw it & wow ! I loved this movie.

    I don't get the obsession with Cusack looking or not looking like Wilson, especially when he nails the character and his emotions so well. We know these people are all actors, right? Paul Dano looks a lot more like Wilson than Cusack, but he still looks exactly like Paul Dano, the guy from "There Will Be Blood."
    Besides, I just saw an article that places a photo of Wilson from this period next to one of Cusack in the movie, and it's not that far off.
    Pretty terrific movie, by the way.

    The performances in this movie by Cusack and Dano weren't about "looking like" Brian Wilson. The performances are about convincingly telling Wilson's story, and I must say that I had always loved Beach Boys music, but I had no idea of how tortured Wilson's life (and, his brothers') had been with a cruel and abusive upbringing. How any of these wonderful voices found a reason to sing is beyond me, much less create. Wilson's artistic range is beyond my understanding and both Cusack and Dano deserve recognition for their impressive performances, rather than criticism for failing to "look like" the man that they each portrayed.

    Love and Mercy... The life of the Wilson brothers would like different if their parents have given them love and mercy! Instead, they beat her father regularly with the belt (a Bash hand destroyed at Brian hearing on one side!) and her mother fled to the alcohol to endure her husband, rather than to protect their sons.
    The education with their educational attitude pursues the life and vibrancy of the growing and has since x-generations uncounted people destroyed or difficult their lives. Mankind therefore finally needs a new attitude towards those people who are newly born and grew up as child! Instead education relationship! Love and protection for the child, so respect and respect for his own life, respect for the feelings, the sensations, the perceptions, the thoughts and the words of the child, so full confidence in the child and its potential,

    There are songs that Brian wrote that defined the way music was written for the next 30 years. I mean it all started with him, so much of it did. Brilliant mind for music, and such highly sensitive and artistic people do bruise easily. I guess in the end he, himself, and love saved him. I wonder if these actors and script will be able to capture it?

    I don't get the casting of John Cusack. Paul Dano should have played B. Wilson young and older. Cusack is a good actor but not all actors are suited for every part. While it's very easy to believe Dano's portrayal as Brian Wilson, I could not for a second get past the fact that I was seeing John Cusack, NOT Brian Wilson.

      oldiesgeek1 I think of all the biopics I've seen, like "Great Balls of Fire", "The Buddy Holly Story", "Ray", and even "I'm not There", about the Bob Dylan. The list goes on, but one common thread in all of them is that the actors at least looked, acted and sounded like the singers they were portraying. People will say that it's all about the acting, not whether they look like the singer/musician. Jack Nicholson is a great actor, but would someone cast him as Elvis Presley or Fats Domino?

    • @TerryUniGeezerPeterson
      @TerryUniGeezerPeterson 9 років тому +4

      Bela Tarr The reason I mentioned "I'm not there", is because even though many actors - including a female - were playing the part of B.D., but at least they all tried to look like, act and sound like Dylan. Cusack is being Cusack, but it's just distracting so see Cusack portraying Brian Wilson. Having said all that, I will still see the movie since I am a Beach Boys fan. And if Brian himself loves it, it must be great, even with Cusack as the older Brian.

    One thing I'm really hoping to see in this film are the Pet Sounds and SMiLE sessions. I REALLY want them to go deep into that, because with the other Beach Boys films (which aren't that great), they never go deep into the creation of either album, and the MANY articles I've read as well as the book only talk about the things everyone already knows (the Fire coincidence, the sandbox, the tents, the barking dogs, etc.)

    I have seen a lot of comments regarding the dual casting of Paul Dano and John Cusack. A few things. Prettty evident that Paul Dano looks a like Brian in the 1960's. And John Cusack does resemble Brian a bit from the 1980's. Remember, the current day Brian, at age 72 is not being portrayed in the movie.
    The director, Bill Polhad is showing that the Brian Wilson of the 1980's and early 1990's having survived the torture of "Dr." Gene Landy, came out a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT person than the Brian Wilson of the 1960's. Using a different actor, who can capture the tics and off beat mannerisms of Brian Wilson is paramount to acheive that effect.
    Go with it.

    Hard to imagine Cusack as Brian, but it was great to hear he has the reverance from a sweet sit-in on a recent ***** podcast. I hope this film reaches far and wide in a way so many other made-for-TV Brian/Beach Boys biopics may not have been able to. Maybe a new generation can discover the wonder of Brian and his heart. It's wild to think about how someone basically evil like Landy by all means should have destroyed this legend, but perhaps through the good grace of the universe Brian has been allowed (however fractured) to endure in a world that can always use more pure souls.
    Can't wait to see this!
