This movie completely broke me... It was brutally honest in the way it portrayed the effects of war.

The relentless onslaught of death was agonizing. I kept thinking, "Stop dying!"
When her brother died, and the moment when she thought she saw him outside the window...that was the last straw. It broke me.

The worst part is, a few years after that movie, the second world war started. And that peace you finally found will be lost again. And all those happy endings get broken up all over again.
That is the true heartbreak in this.

Well, she was fortunate not to lose anyone in WW2. But for many people, yes, that was the case.

This film literally took my breath away in parts. My grandfather was killed in this war, fighting for the British, in 1917. I have a photo of my grandmother and him on their wedding day, both young and beautiful, unaware of what was to come. When I was a young boy in the 1960s she told me once that she still missed him.

    • @marii2808

Absolutely heartbreaking, I am so sorry to hear about this. Wishing all the best for you and your grandmother.

@@marii2808 Thank you for your sweet comment. I am 70 and I still remember what a wonderful person she was and still think of her often. None of us in the family now of course knew my grandfather but if she married him we all feel he had to be someone pretty special. When she told me that time she still missed him it was their wedding anniversary date. And it was that moment in childhood when you first realize the grown ups in your world had a life before you and had been young once.

One of the saddest films I think I've ever watched, but it's certainly an amazing and very moving story- it's unbelievable to think this is based on an autobiography. There are so many war films out there and history in school focuses so much on war that one almost becomes desensitised to the grim images we're so frequently shown, but this film really highlights the personal loss experienced by war that I think many fail to capture. Even if war films aren't your thing ordinarily, this is an absolute must-watch.

This trailer doesn't NEARLY do this movie justice. It's so much more than a love story, or just "another" silly romance set during a war. No. As someone on TUmblr perfectly phrased it, "it's a film about family, love (for family, friends, perceived enemies, and significant others), women’s rights, loss, the courage to do what you believe to be right, and staying strong." It's a movie about war, and the consequences of it. It's a look into the true horror that was The Great War.
This movie struck me with emotions very few movies ever had in the past. I began sobbing moments after I stopped it. And I continued to sob for a good half an hour. The only two other movies that ever evoked this much emotion from me were 12 Years a Slave and The Schindler's List, and this movie is NOTHING like them (I mean, if you've seen those two, trust me it's not like THOSE), but it was just as emotional within its own respect. I got so lost into the story that I sobbed and felt Vera's pain. I was a sobbing, snotty mess by the time I finally calmed down.
This movie is so beautiful. The cinematography, the brilliant acting, the storyline (also, given that this is based off of a memoir, that these specific events actually happened and weren't just made up from a morbid, romantic writer makes it even more beautifully heartbreaking).
I initially decided to watch this because 1) Taron Egerton and 2) I'm a sucker for period dramas (especially love stories revolving around WWI or WWII)... but I was given so much more than I was expected. And this is now way up at the top of my list as one of my all time favorite movies.

You are fully right Valerie, I watched this movie by chance on Sky TV Italia two months ago and just after few minutes I understood that it was much more than a "war movie", it is something greater that explains to us that even in desperate moments such a world war our mind, our soul still cannot forget family, love, intellectual curiosity, culture, i.e. a "handful" of things, the only really relevant to our lives, that are those for which our life deserves to be lived. I watched it three times in a row, I couldn't stop watching again and again

What a hurtful and real frase.... " Our youth has been stolen from us"... We might not be living in a war right now but this economic crisis has changed our dreams and plans, we travel away from our friends or the love of our life just to find a job.... I feel like that too sometimes, that they have stolen our best years... I can't even imagine how unbearable it must have been at times of war and how much people suffer today around the world because of war...

During exactly this time, 100 years ago, she was going through this all. Thinking about that breaks my heart. To be honest I've never heard of her before (I'm not from England) but i'm glad I know about her story now. The movie is brilliant. I can't imagine the pain she went through in such a short period of time and still managed to follow her dream as a writer.

I have just watched this movie and recommend anyone who is questioning themselves to watch it, to watch it. This movie was very well done and has a heartfelt story based on the original book by Vera. This shows another view point from the first world war, and shows the hardships for those that were left behind. I really do recommend this and i am planning on buying the book to read.

This movie is more than a story about war, love, friendship, women and family...There's something special about it that just fucked me up... i ve never cried like this before :,)...I can't believe people like Vera Brittain existed, she was so brave. *masterpiece*

I did a project on Vera Brittain in secondary school. She is an inspiration, and believe me her memoirs are incredibly emotional. If this film is close to reality as her memoirs then I can assure you this will be the most emotional film you'll ever watch. It will blow your mind... what happens is so sad - there's clues in the trailer, but I won't say anything else. Just watch this, and cry for months :-)

We've been happily married for 13 years now

just watched it. alicia vikander is a brilliant actress. it really touched me. that movie deserved the oscar of my heart. i'm actually not really into war movies but this one is a must see. its about the fates of a war and not about the war itself. we call all this lives forced to be part of that horrible occurrence "war" but it's more just a war. the term "war" only tells you that there are fights going on associated with weapons and loud noises but we all forget the fates deeply involved in that...

Yeah. It really isn't. Her brother's death crushed her more. And the film twisted the knife as war does by making us think he was going to live.
She requested that her ashes be scattered on his grave in Italy. "...for nearly 50 years much of my heart has been in that Italian village cemetery."

Thank you for recognising the fact that Colin Morgan and Kit Harington are nothing but characters in a series. What is wrong with basing movies off wars? Because this is true and so it is helping the new generation realise how horrible wars were and why they should never happen again, this movie and others like it are getting the word out to the younger generation because they probably won't read this book in English when it is assigned to them and if they won't read it for an assignment what makes you think they will read it for pleasure and enjoyment? Making a movie with well-known actors and actress's is the only way that this new generation will learn about these types of tragedies. And I do know that they probably only made this for money but if you look hard enough you will find that not everyone is money driven, some just want the world to be a better place.

  • @Sakshi-qm7ki

Warning, this is not for the light-hearted people out there. It is not about a love story set in WW1, and it's not about Kit's character. It is about so many different people and how they were affected and hurt by the war. I was absolutely devastated by the end of the movie, and it touched every fiber of my heart. It really opens up your mind on how the war affected not just a single person, but everyone around them also, like a domino effect. Alicia Vikander did such a beautiful job (though I was originally watching because Kit is in it), she was amazing, her acting was breathtaking, and now I'm basically gonna watch every movie of her's. It's such an inspiring movie that will always always live in my heart. Great job ❤️
