I will say that a LOT of people (Many of whom are autistic themselves) have pointed out that Laios is VERY autistic coded which really helps explain why he acts the way he does (IE his hyper fixations and the fact that he's not very good at social cues).

Luckily no one pursued this quest early... but;
It was a temp housing unite along the main road going from one end of the continent to the other so people could weather out storms and such.
All the things were regularly restocked and unlike an Inn it was totally free.
Basically everything was a monster in disguise and a Necromancer and monster tamer were working near it so groups were just out numbered by cannon fodder while dealing with everything as a hidden enemy.
Enough people made it back to town to let people know it was hela dangerous; but no one actually made it back alive. Just bloody messages from the minions basically.
The trick to it was meant to be that people are idiots that ignore instinct and died by going inside and marking themselves as targets. If the building was destroyed then the spells that got everything involved went with it. Allowing the Party to set up repeated ambushes and barely stand a chance of survival... at say Lv 12+.
I set it up so hard because my parties tend to obliterate any sane attempts at challenging the players.
I think Laios is Autistic in some fashion.
Fave character is the Dwarf cook.
I could definitely see Laios being on the specturm with how he hyperfixates and seems to struggle with social situations even among friends.
I believe the side content showed that his sister made up for some of it, while she also had her own problems with social situations.
I discussed this in a later episode he doesn't have autistic characteristics but instead ADHD characteristics. Don't remember which episode it is since I'm already caught up

@@Aliciaxlife as an autistic person with adhd, he DEFINITELY does have autistic characteristics, i've seen far too much of laios' social tendencies in myself that aren't ADHD based, but firmly rooted in my autism, the internal monologue despite the situation mirrors autistic overthinking, oversharing and not reading the room like asking if someone has been revived from being fully digested and turned to shit x3

Laios is my mood. Like I don’t think I’ve ever felt so…connected to any character in a personal way like him
Fun fact: the author is a big cRPG nerd, she made fanart of games from Baldur's Gate to Dragon Age, Pillars of Eternity and Pathfinder, with commentary! (in which she displays a hilarious lack of interest in Astarion and simps hard for the female elves of these games). Rumor has it that she wrapped up the manga in a timely manner just in time to binge Baldur's Gate 3 on release.
One thing that I like about her character designs is that she can draw pretty/handsome people with a lot of variety.
For the sake of comparision, take Oda from One Piece for example: his character designs are wild, with cartoonish proportions and huge differences in shape and size, and he does it for men and women, which I respect a lot. On the other hand, when it comes to pretty women he seems falls back to the same body and face with some details changed here or there (sometimes, you can barely distinguish characters by their hair and clothes), and that is my biggest gripe with his style.
Ryoko Kui seems to have a much broader view of how a character can look while still being really beautiful, and it really shows in her work. Can't wait for you all to meet a bunch of characters from later in the series.
EDIT: Also, I find it hilarious that there absolutely IS fanservice in this series, from suspicious camera angles and flashing undergarments to saucy chapter cover art. But it is all about Senshi, he is the designated fanservice character. And you know what? She cooked.
to be fair , astarion is like...the basic bit*h romance option in bg3. Edgy vampire boys are soooo overplayed
I would love for the mangaka to find the time and play through Pathfinder, because both Camelia and Ember are bound to evoke some serious emotions from a cultured elf lover like.
Heck, with how elf/fey like he is despite technically not being one, Daeran, the main rake and heart throb from that game, might work where Astarion failed.
@@fillosof66689 But she did. Dunno about Daeran, but in that same fanart panel she drew Ember, Octavia, Camelia (with the caption "it was love at first sight") and Jaethal (which she calls "My undead elf wife"). I suggest you look it up, it is so damn good.

The art in the manga is a great refresher from all the 'same face' syndrome in fantasy manga. The character design and world building over the course of the show is top notch, the author really put in a lot of work. Trigger did a really good job adaptating it.
Apparently, for some reason, author of Golden Kamui had one-sided beef with her over manga popularity. He was going super competitive.

Dungeon Meshi! The manga is one of the tightest, most thematically coherent stories I've ever read, and the adaptation has been great so far. I hope you enjoy!
Yeah, just before the anime released I went and binge read it as I hadn't realized it is actually complete. Really solid story from start to finish. I really liked that the author made sure to make a proper epilogue as well.
In scenario, he was legitimetely just standing around, zoned out in real time.
Other times in anime, talking is a free action.
The best part of this series is that the stakes are real, even if people are super easy to resurrect in the dungeon, because the main party still has a time crunch due to an unbelievably specific set of circumstances that still makes sense.
The second best part of the series is that the *steaks* are real...

Bruh as someone who has reread the manga over 3 friggin times already you have NO IDEA how tightly woven in the food theme meshes(heh) with the plot! Like the idea of the balanced ecosystem and just everything regarding the idea of food consumption just flows perfectly and actually makes a whole lot of damn good sense!
It was a bit of a strange experience I had towards the end of this series. I was getting more and more excited as it looked like she was wasn't going to abandon the themes she had already established and wrap them all up in a satisfying ending. I have read/watch so many stories where they abandon the original premise and/or flub the landing.

Laios is great he's very passionate to the point of ignoring social norms. The big thing to understand throughout their adventure is that they are seasoned adventurers especially in comparison to other characters.
Laios is a super nice guy who is passionate about a weird hobby. Like a lot of obsessive nerds, he sacrificed his understanding of how people act for a deeper understanding of the stuff he's obsessed with -- dungeon monsters.
No spoilers, but as you called out early on, the world building in this series is pretty great. I don't know how far the anime will go into the series, but I think the reason the manga works so well is because the mangaka was so diligent about showing the audience what this world is from early on. She started out with a kind of gimmicky cozy feeling and just enough story to make the characters do the gimmick, but her writing shifts and uses the strength of the worldbuilding to evolve into a really compelling fantasy story that also includes a cozy cooking gimmick.
Sometimes you gotta let your friend get gooped by a monster so they don't ignore you a second time
I think my favorite description I’ve read of this show is having two friends decide whether Rusty needles or broken glass would be better in a stew and then somehow making it taste amazing regardless
There is nothing quite like the treasure trove of reaction images that Marcille gives throughout the series, and it will be great to see all that animated.

15:37 This is the venom and poison distinction. Venom usually has to be injected to work. So you could eat venom but, if you had any of bleeding wound on its trip, you run the risk of the venom getting into your blood stream. Thereby allow the venom to do its work.
What helps me distinguish em is that venomous things makes me think of snakes and scorpions first, and poisonous things that come to mind are funky colored frogs (i forget the term for warning colors) and mushrooms
I think the subtitles are a little bit too conservative on some lines. When Marcille says "Falin is dear to me too." She pretty clearly says "I love Falin too."
Just HOW she loves her is up to interpretation. And fans do be interpreting.

It is hard to blame them when Marcille was just a magical medical researcher but literally dropped everything and memorized all her offensive spells in one day because Falin asked her to come adventuring with her.
SO glad you're checking this out! I've wanted Dungeon Meshi to be an anime for a while, and I have been thoroughly enjoying it now that it is. The premise of cooking the monsters for food, and taking the food prep seriously is a serotonin rush to my brain.
Glad you're starting this one, it's a hell of a ride once things get going and the world building is fantastic. One of my absolute faves of recent.

I feel like you're over-focusing on the 'internal monoluguing' thing, that sorta thing doesn't happen in real time, it's just meant to be his thoughts over the course of the fight, he's not actually meant to be like, standing there like a lump while he's thinking diagetically.
something to keep in mind is that death in this world is a common occurence and that may have made people less cautious 'cause you can just get revived for a lumpsum, that aside another enjoyable vid as always. stay lit and cheers for y'alls good health

I actually found the manga for this online years ago so it's very impressive to see it was adapted into an anime.
This anime is what happens when a DM is asked if the monsters are edible.
I literally shouted “YES!! FUCK YEAH!!!!” out loud when I saw this video thumbnail. I love Dungeon Meshi SO FUCKING MUCH and finding a reactor who’s actually interesting to watch check this anime out had been a fucking nightmare you have no idea

I am so happy that you're reacting to this show. It's a masterpiece in world building. I love fantasy stories where the monsters have believable anatomy. The amount of detail that go into monster designs is so cool.

The anime seems to be playing a lot of stereotypes completely straight and then explaining them, it's drawing a lot of inspiration from D&D. And one majour D&D stereotype is that Dwarves are reliable, friendly, if a little gruff and unfailingly honourable. In most D&D settings and editions the average dwarf is Lawful Good, which means honourable and well intentioned.
They're also more or less obsessive craftsmen, they love seeing things they've worked on completed and put to good use.

Fun fact. The manga is so old that it trggered the trend several years ago of having food scenes in manga and anime. The manga wrapped up shortly before the release of Baldur's Gate 3. The mangaka refused to let it be adapted until she finished it.

After immediately finding Laios relatable, it's super funny watching someone start the show who latches onto Marcille more.
Arachnids actually have the weakest venom out there, another way to tell the difference between venom and poison is that venom is fairly often safe to consume because the intent is to get it directly into the bloodstream where poison tends do work just with contact. So long as you don't have an open wound in your moth or where the venom can be in contact with blood the digestive process tends to make it useless.

It's amazing that the Japanese fans love the English dub more. They say their voices tone matches their characters a lot better and are top quality.
Started binging the manga when the anime adaptation was announced and caught up to it in time to see it conclude, really enjoyed it the whole way through. Looking forward to this adaptation, and your reaction, this series is a very wacky, tasty treat!

Holy crap, I was not expecting you to watch this and yet here you are on my UA-cam home page.
Ohhh god, all Laios would need to HEAR is that eating monsters gives him special powers, and we'd never see him again. He really, really means well, and loves his sister and his friends, but he can be a *_SKULL-CRUSHINGLY_* dumbassed brick of meat sometimes.
I've completed the manga, been loving the anime, and have seen people beginning to react to it, but you're the first vtuber this expressive to do it, so you draw first blood, kudos~ the ecology, economy, and biodiversity of the dungeon is a major point for a while in the story, but believe me when I say, the actual STORY begins to gain steam fast down the way. As far as Marci's concerned, she's primarily an academic, and prefers to do things by the book in most instances, but again, this adventure to resurrect and rescue Falin is gonna change 'em all, her especially. Senshi is the party's dad most of the time, with his own story coming later on in the second season, unfortunately. I'm speaking from distance into the manga, it's a ways down the road. Unless Netflix wants a fuckin' riot on their hands, they'll have commissioned the full story on anime; it's doing well, if they end it where the Red Dragon reenters the story, that's almost to the story's HALFWAY point. Chilchuck, the half-foot rogue on their team, is a whole ordeal of interesting developments, so that WILL happen. What I'm mostly trying to come around to with this bloviating bigass comment is give this one some time, it goes to some great creative places, explores almost every character that arrives to some degree, and has a unique sense of fiction and humor to it you just don't get in a lot of anime these days. And at 99 chapters, the story itself ain't no One Piece, it's barely 100 chapters long, and full of unique experiences. Good luck in there!
I found this manga a few Christmases ago and binged it when without internet.
A great series, that kicked off a lot of the "food anime"; I'll just say, there is a reason Studio Trigger chose this and it's not because they wanted to diversify their brand.

It's weird in the first episode their somewhat detatched attitude to Fallin's death, later we catch on that this is because they died a number of times in gruesome ways. They were also quite famished and slow, Laios' group shoud be able to deal with that Red Dragon otherwise.

About your question as to whether scorpion venom is safe to eat. It is, though it’s not advisable. Poison and venom are different. Venom molecules are too large so they are applied through injection rather than ingestion.
