Heck, we even later on had a whole chapter dedicated to showing difference between Laios steady and patient approach to rescuing his sister and someone else rushing for his own reasons into depths dragging himself ragged with worry and lack of proper stops... In general saying how Laios acts is weird is like saying that it is weird that a sweet tooth is hyper exited in a candy store while trying to explain how and why each candy is so awesome (and how you should pace yourself).
@@Ghostel3591 you realise that just cause hes competent doesnt mean he isnt autistic right. Its very clearly a combination of the two. @n30You do realise that I can hit you back with your "logic" cause you make such a shaky argument... Can easily be deconstructed? You do NOT have a solid proof if it being the case. No word of god (Author) or in universe statement. I mean c'mon this is getting ridiculous. Every series, every franchise... If a character has something he loves and gushes about and narrative presents it as "a weird fascination" - slap him with a label, clearly he has a psychological condition! You can love something to bits, be exited and talk everyone's ears off even w/o autism... And c'mon at least read up on symptoms of Autism. CHECK THE FRICKIN' WIKI - you know actually READ the symptoms part. Not the list itself - but EXPLANATION FOR EACH OF SYMPTOMS ON THE LIST. Does he get anxiety attacks if you break his repetitive behaviours? He causes self-harm? Avoids eye contact? Nothing of sorts. @@_Trash_Goblin these ARE mutually exclusive things because Autism is NOT "a quirky personality" but a medical condition that REQUIRES to be diagnosed and treated accordingly (as in special treatment toutine, possible medications etc apply) and as such has SPECIFIC COMBO OF RECURRING SYMPTOMPS of which Laios exhibits none (seriously just check wiki it is a VERY SPECIFIC list) He is just "an excited weirdo" . Ever saw WH40K tabletop lovers explain stuff and rules of their wargame? They do be like Laios. Doesn't make every WH40K fan an autist though.
A little fact nugget: Kelpies originate from Scottish (maybe Celtic?) folklore. They're largely the same as shown here: horse-like creatures that dwell in water and try to lure people in to drown them.
In the Orkneys they're called Nuggles, and in Scandinavia, particularly Iceland, they're also called Nykur. In all other respects besides name they are functionally (and with only a few differences in things like ear shape or position depending on the myth) identical.
Imagine if the kelpie was a shark or a crocodile, does Laios' thought process make more sense now? He wasn't kidding when he said people have a soft spot for mammals specifically. It's a wild animal, even if it seems friendly they're still dangerous. Laios loves monsters, and it's because of that that he is so cautious around them, because he recognizes the danger that they present
Anyone who knows about Celtic mythology was yelling at the screen when that thing appeared. Kelpies are notoriously evil fae that lure people into attempting to ride them, only to bind them to their backs and drown them. They love targeting children and mentally vulnerable people, especially.
@~30:40 For Laois' "This Kraken is larger than usual comment", I'd assume that the common Kraken are usually killed and such before they grow very large in this universe, though there might be some truly legendary giants hiding out at sea that are fitting for the real world myth. I don't think the writing ever really expands upon this though. I will say that if I remember correctly in the manga he more specifically says something along the lines of "it's bigger than you would expect for this body of water". I could be misremembering though, it's been a bit since I read the chapter this part is from.
while the idea of eating _any_ kind of parasite is an awful idea, cooked or otherwise, this is meant to be a take-off of eel, specifically unagi kabayaki, it is DELICIOUS, and usually the closest analog of it you can find Stateside is the grilled marinated eel on rice, it is a slimy, sticky squishy meet with a sweet-smoky saucy savory MAELSTROM of tastiness, I highly recommend it. Also, the dish Laios makes earlier is a comfort porridge-like dish called Zosui, using barley and mimic meat. The real stuff here in our world is pretty much the same, with chicken and dashi-- it's basically a rice meat stew kinda dealie. Further notes from the Manga Completionist here, most of Laios personality quirks come from his time working as a laborer for a merchant ship he and Falin came over to this island on. He worked hard, got some martial training (since he was like a farmhand, and had to defend the folks he worked for if needed) and learned about roughing it. His love of dogs comes from his childhood, with his fathers' hunting dogs/pets. Furhtermore, you learn thru side-comics that Laios shaves mostly because Falin said he looks like their dad if he grows his beard out, and Laios does not like his dad for not being more caring for Falin, once it was revealed to the judgmental townsfolk that she was a talented cleric at a young age. There's much I hope the series can find a way to touch on; Laios Torden is a great deal more than the sum of his apparent lack of social skills or tact.
The way I see it, the other party getting wiped out so often is in equal part for the plot, the joke of them getting wiped out so easily despite being a talented main character party and to illustrate that the dungeon is that dangerous even to a well balanced and experienced group.
Even with how much Laios' neurodivergence causes him to act and expresses his thoughts weird, I honestly don't get the reaction people had of him being wary about being too comfortable with the Kelpie. Even weirder because someone like Chilchuck would express the same thoughts with sarcasm and people would get the meaning immediately
I think it´s many reasons, one the kelpie is cute and they romanticize it immediately, Senshi is usually right so they just believe him when he says it´s ok, and Laios is crazy for eating these things so they think he´s being obsessive like usual
@@r.a.fgattaiguy845 plus he loves monsters in general and the scene with the kelpie is supposed to highlight that just because he loves monsters doesnt mean he trusts any of them. Plus he studied monsters a lot and is fully aware that kelpies hunt by luring people into riding them and then drowning them. Its showcasing both his caution and his knowledge of monsters, examples of why hes such a competent adventurer generally
In some of the supplemental manga material, it shows the reason he's weary of Kelpies is that it actually happened to him before, he tried riding one and it tried to drown him, Falin had to save him lol

Yes, English Laios is the best. Everyone's like "Emily Rudd, Emily Rudd" (Marcille's) and she's good dgmw. But Laios' VA just nails his unhinged and childish antics and on every aspect. He is the true goat in the cast. We also got ProZD as Senshi, which is unsuprisingly great.
As to the kraken turning white: Many cephalopods (the class of animals including squid, octopus, cuttlefish, and nautilus) can change their skin color, both for communication and camouflage. If their brain isn't ordering a color change, they revert to their default skin color, which for many deep sea creatures is pale white.
"A Kelpie? That's a cute name!" Meanwhile me, who was taught about kelpies from the age of nine: **KILL IT WITH FIRE RIGHT NOW, DO NOT GIVE IT THE CHANCE.** Also, this is a Gygax-style dungeon ala ORIGINAL flavour D&D. That means the lethality is ultra high and survival is based on intuition and good sense, rather than relying on your stat block. Thus you see pretty boy and his "well-spec'd" party dying left and right while the eccentric but knowledgeable party of Laios thrives.
Half foot is basically "halfing" and a seperate race. Basically just short humans who live slightly longer than a regular human or a "tall-man" as they are called here
They actually live for a significantly shorter amount of time in this world. Half-foots are only expected to live to about 50 years old and are considered fully grown at 14. Chilchuck is pretty old for his race; Over half way through his expected life span.
Rather than being cold, I interpret Laios doubting the Sea Horse as a coping mechanism of his hyperfixation. Out of everyone, monster-lover Laios is the one who firstly understands how dangerous monsters are the most and secondly sees all monsters equally. He can't differentiate between kelpies, man-eating plants, or fish-men. Whether they're mammal-like, humanoid, or blatantly deadly. They're all cool as fuck monsters in his book, and that's why he learned to assess the danger they pose more than anyone else.
My friends and I were playing d&d and came upon this same situation. We were attacked by sirens, killed the sirens, and one of our party decided to take the siren back and cook it as part of his chef training. The whole thing sparked a couple of hard debates.
Imo Laios wasn't being best neurodivergent boi with the kelpie, he just knew better than his friends. He is also absolutely right about people having an unfair bias towards mammals.
tall-man is the name for human in this world and half-foot is this worlds halfling/hobbits. Kelpie is a Celtic mythical creature that lure people to ride it where they then is stuck to them so they can drown them.
oh yeah bonus fact the manga said that there where bioluminesens minerals in the water so when they adepted they made the water here the light source of this level of the dungeon. they had a clip from 2019 where they didn't haveit like that and the water was clear
Laios have eaten seafood just not cephalopods he did know how to catch a type of craps he said that he use the teqnic on the scoopion in the first episode
The race of this world called the "Tall-Men" is literally tall. Their average height(Male:180cm(5'10"),Female:170cm(5'6")) is comparable to that of the Dutch.
Fun fact: real life giant squid and other deep sea creatures actually wouldn’t taste good either, just like the kraken. Their meat is packed with ammonium chloride, which is a fertilizer and the main flavoring in black licorice. A scientist that studies giant squid (and is apparently a real life Laios) actually cooked and ate some out of curiosity. He described it as abhorrent awful, like biting into window cleaner, so it’s understandable that Laios wasn’t into it.
Bro, you would NOT BELIEVE how violent them dudes in Oasis are, Wonderwall and all their other songs sound so calming and shit but them dudes was setting fires to BNBs and hitting fans AND EACH OTHER with their instruments!
I actually watch this series in dub bc the cast is so perfect. Laios' english VA, Damien Haas, is actually most known for being a cast member on Smosh, and Senshi is voiced by the one and only Sungwon Cho, aka ProZD! Marcille's VA also kills it every episode tbh
Also, Marcille's VA is Emily Rudd, the same actor who played Nami in Netflix's Live Action One Piece, and this role is her debut as a voice actor too! And Chilchuck's VA, Casey Mongillo, is literally Shinji from the Netflix dub of Neon Genesis Evangelion as well!
Laois is such a cute idiot, I love him. You never know if he is spot on with his decisions because of his hyperfocus on monsters or if he is comepletely wrong because he can't read situations.
Brown Griffith aka Mr. Self-righteous keep taking those Ls. Side note, those guys 'didn't revive the group, since they weren't dead, they just woke the group up and ripped them off charging extra as if they did an actual revival.
The kelpie here is basically like it's orginal telling, except for one missing part where it's said that it's skin is sticky like... well gorilla glue is the best example. Once it's skin has a hold of you the only way you're getting out is by losing that limb. (If you even get luckily enough to only get one limb stuck that is...)
"If a grown man shoves his fingers up your nose, he deserves to be heard out." It's not like Alicia often says bs-type things, but this might be the absolute truest statement she has ever uttered. when i was watching this episode i was about to slap Senshi upside the head for trusting a Kelpie LMAO if a mythical creature is acting friendly in order to get close to you, ALWAYS assume it's trying to eat you. that is practically top 3 rules of monsters, ESPECIALLY if they're really small, like faeries. and yes Alicia i understand the empathy factor of getting attached to the monsters, but that's quite literally WHY THEY DO IT 🤣
9:57 - *“A ‘Kelpie’? That's a cute name.”* Certainly cuter than the more accurately descriptive *"People-Drowning, Flesh-Eating Murder-Horse".* The name "Kelpie" just rolls more easily off the tongue. The upshot is: Don't trust horses with strangely wet manes you meet by the seaside, who seem… uncommonly willing - almost _eager_ - to let total strangers ride on their backs. You might find yourself in a… _sticky_ situation. And then the kelpies feast well, that night. 14:09 - *"Holy shit, why'd it sink?!”* Because that's what kelpies do. They wait for someone to climb on their back, and then drag them to the bottom of the water to drown them. That's how they feed. This is why they look like horses: to better entice people into trying to ride them. Senshi thought he had befriended a harmless creature, when in reality he was just lucky he never triggered the instinctive killing behaviour of a predator.
Squids, as well as many other cephalopods have color changing chromatophores that they use for camouflage. So when one dies, those chromatophores stop functioning and cause the body to appear white in color.
Just a little heads up on the mythology. Kelpies come from Scotland. Where they trick people, especially children, into entering the water they inhabit. Whereupon they drown their victims. So even though that one might have been somewhat friendly to Senchi for completely noble reasons. It couldn't fight its nature once it had the chance. Think of it like lions, tigers and other big cats. They can be sweat and playful to their zookeepers 99% of the time. Practically just big cats. However if a keeper runs away from one. It'll instinctively start to chase and might maul them. Also I'm glad you finally checked out the English Voices. They are just to good. Also heres the thing. You might think you're getting the same experience watching something in Japanese with subtitles. However things like nuance, tone, inflections and such that are intrinsically tied to specific languages are lost on sub watchers. Which is terrible for comedy anime given how much based on delivery. I mean think of it this way. What's better, reading a joke book or going to watch a stand-up show?
Laios' biggest hurdle is that he hasn't figured out masking. You gotta baby the neurotypicals to get them to do the smart thing so they don't get themselves killed.
So for a little context, every humanoid race in Dungeon Meshi are basically considered "Human". Tall-man are the common name for "regular" humans, and elves are simply considered a sub-group of the human race, same goes for dwarves and half-foots. So everyone in the main group at this point of the story are considered "humans", just different variations of humans.
The parasite is being prepared exactly like Japanese eel. It is delicious but sadly very rare. Japanese were overfished and thus are endangered and extremely difficult to farm. Which is a shame cause unagi don bowls are SO GOOD!
So, the "Tall-man" thing is basically what humans are called in this setting. All the races are considered "Human", but what Laios is is called a Tall-man.

Plus him being so hyperfixated on monsters is what led him to be so successful in the first place. Which is the case with a lot of really specific specialists in the real world as well.
(You do remember it is one? Not a character trait or label like "nerd" - it is a MEDICAL condition which you has to be DIAGNOSED with and is NOT taken lightly?)
If you look it up Laios doesn't fit neither Autism nor ADHD because aside from his love for monsters and "eh this is fine" attitude. He misses any and all other signs of these conditions.
He sometimes ignores people focused on something? - Oh I dunno he is right before the stuff he LIKES. You never get into anything that you ignore or miss others talking to you?
Does he get anxiety attacks if you break his repetitive behaviours?
He causes self-harm?
Avoids eye contact?
Nothing of sorts.
He just has a weird fascination with flora and fauna and perfectly acts as a seasoned leader of a team...
Yep. Clearly he has a condition some people work through for years as their parents help them to function properly in society as adults.
Seriously people stop assuming stuff...
@@Ghostel3591These are not mutually exclusive things.
@@_Trash_Goblin these ARE mutually exclusive things because Autism is NOT "a quirky personality" but a medical condition that REQUIRES to be diagnosed and treated accordingly (as in special treatment toutine, possible medications etc apply) and as such has SPECIFIC COMBO OF RECURRING SYMPTOMPS of which Laios exhibits none (seriously just check wiki it is a VERY SPECIFIC list)
He is just "an excited weirdo" . Not a person with an actual medical condition caused not by upbringing or some psychological trauma but SPECIFIC deviaition of neuropatterns in a developing brain. Autism is NOT a simple thing - there is a reason Kids go through a THOROUGH examination before getting diagnosed with it.
I mean c'mon at least respect what Autism means... People recently just tend to apply it to every "weird personality type" character like "cringe" word seemingly becoming one and all replacememt word for "funny", "awkward", "lame", "so bad its good" in one word.
In good ol' days they would call him "monster nerd" and it will be right on the money.
Or what? Every 80s/90s/2000s/2010s/current day nerd who goes on a tangent about stuff they love is Autistic?
Yeah, those Celtic monsters are no joke
Kelpies are from Celtic mytholagy, they are known to lure unsuspecting riders to climb on their backs so they can drown them.
@@mythman30 people don't need a medical condition to be obsessed with something and excel at their job due to a knowledge acquired because of that obsession. Autism is a medical condition, as in you need a qualified Doc to check you whether that same "Fascination with stuff and talking everyone's ears off" is ACTUALLY the case or kid just loves it a lot.
Seriously this a medical condition. Not something that makes you "Special". Or at least this will be not "Special" people think it is. The other kind. The "I have to go through special therapy and treatment" kind of.
Asthma also makes you "Special" and you can live with that - still doesn't mean every person who has difficulties breathing after a marathon has this illness and not just in a bad shape. And not every person who trained their lungs to have great capacity and became an exceptional diver due to that... Had an "Asthma".
Stop putting labels on everything.
@@Ghostel3591 it´s special because it´s rare for anime character to have this condition, specially this well written, that´s why people like it
also you can have autism and still like things to the point of never shutting up about them, stop making weird comparisons and enjoy your autistic dungeon crawling
Isn’t it Damien from Smosh?
@@PotatoSack615 yep
billlee3851 the va is also neurodivergent(ocd, adhd, autism) which is great
As to the kraken turning white: Many cephalopods (the class of animals including squid, octopus, cuttlefish, and nautilus) can change their skin color, both for communication and camouflage. If their brain isn't ordering a color change, they revert to their default skin color, which for many deep sea creatures is pale white.
"A Kelpie? That's a cute name!"
Meanwhile me, who was taught about kelpies from the age of nine: **KILL IT WITH FIRE RIGHT NOW, DO NOT GIVE IT THE CHANCE.**
Also, this is a Gygax-style dungeon ala ORIGINAL flavour D&D.
Chilchuck is pretty old for his race; Over half way through his expected life span.
hobbit!
20:07 I laughed so hard at that part that he learned the mermaids song. That was a so in character moment. 😂
Anyone else wanna see Richard react to this? Specifically just to see if he agrees with whatever Laios says?😆😆
"Mommy i love mermaids!"
"Me too!! Their thigh meat makes such delicious steaks!!"
Do mermaids have thighs
"That Time My Man Got Teleported to a Fantasy World and Started Adventuring in the Dungeon" is my favourite anime
It really is a favorite character when you take the effort to listen to him in different languages.
misunderstandings are my bane in any kind of fiction. like, JUST TALK IT OUT DAMMIT
It's always a misunderstanding...
Just once I'd like a Mr. Understanding...
The English Dub is honestly fantastic, one of the best Dubs I've seen!
Marcille Donato, the Italian elf! She know her seafood and respect the ingredients!
love how accurate they make mythos creatures and there behavior
omg alicia talking about the shower washing legs thing got me wanting to see her react to the Style Theory Matpat did on it. Please Alicia!!!
The race of this world called the "Tall-Men" is literally tall. Their average height(Male:180cm(5'10"),Female:170cm(5'6")) is comparable to that of the Dutch.
Yo, the dub for this anime is actually really good
Fun fact: real life giant squid and other deep sea creatures actually wouldn’t taste good either, just like the kraken.
The English VAs for this show are great
Bro, you would NOT BELIEVE how violent them dudes in Oasis are, Wonderwall and all their other songs sound so calming and shit but them dudes was setting fires to BNBs and hitting fans AND EACH OTHER with their instruments!
For anyone wondering. The dub for this show is great. I would totally recommend it.
Me watching this on my phone in the bath. *grabs a wash cloth to give my legs and ass another scrub*
Also, there are lots of myths about how eating mermaid flesh grants immortality, so its fair for them to talk about it, at least.
I love the English VA for Laios. He's on another UA-cam channel, Smosh. His name is Damian Haas.
22:09 IT'S DAMIEN HAAS FROM SMOSH!! He does the English voice for Laios
Laios is our autistic king. It don't matter that he don't get people - his hearts in the right place
11:01 🤓 Um, *actually,* Alicia, the more practical use *is* to use it’s guts to make a float. Don’t you know Kelpies are classic monsters that trick people into drowning? Honestly, they’re just evil, it makes way more sense to just kill them 🤓
yesss ... someone discovering how good the dub is... tbh a lot of people sleep on the dub but the dungeon meshi dub is super good and very faithful to the original dialogue! highly recommend checking it out if you rewatch
when i was watching this episode i was about to slap Senshi upside the head for trusting a Kelpie LMAO
if a mythical creature is acting friendly in order to get close to you, ALWAYS assume it's trying to eat you. that is practically top 3 rules of monsters, ESPECIALLY if they're really small, like faeries.
and yes Alicia i understand the empathy factor of getting attached to the monsters, but that's quite literally WHY THEY DO IT 🤣
Adhd and autism are hard to differentiate sometimes it doesn't help when someone has both.
The english dub is FMAB levels of good imo, perfect casting.
9:57 - *“A ‘Kelpie’? That's a cute name.”*
Certainly cuter than the more accurately descriptive *"People-Drowning, Flesh-Eating Murder-Horse".* The name "Kelpie" just rolls more easily off the tongue.
The upshot is: Don't trust horses with strangely wet manes you meet by the seaside, who seem… uncommonly willing - almost _eager_ - to let total strangers ride on their backs. You might find yourself in a… _sticky_ situation. And then the kelpies feast well, that night.
14:09 - *"Holy shit, why'd it sink?!”*
Because that's what kelpies do.
The dub for Dunge9n Meshi is actually pretty goated
Squids, as well as many other cephalopods have color changing chromatophores that they use for camouflage. So when one dies, those chromatophores stop functioning and cause the body to appear white in color.
I just finished binge reading the manga yesterday and now i am even more hypef gor this series and adaptation
The most practical use for kelpies is as glue
Laios' biggest hurdle is that he hasn't figured out masking. You gotta baby the neurotypicals to get them to do the smart thing so they don't get themselves killed.
i love how goofy laios is
For the English Vas, Damien Haas is Laios, Emily Rudd is Marcille, Casey Mongillo is Chilchuk, and SungWon Cho is Senshi
the main character is so fiancee coded💗😮💨
Ah, Alicia discovers how good the English dub is.
Seriously, it's one of the best ones out there right now.
I can't wait for everyone to find out why he's obsessed with monsters
So for a little context, every humanoid race in Dungeon Meshi are basically considered "Human". Tall-man are the common name for "regular" humans, and elves are simply considered a sub-group of the human race, same goes for dwarves and half-foots. So everyone in the main group at this point of the story are considered "humans", just different variations of humans.
I fucking love the dub of this show man
Pretty sure the feels trip portion of the series begins soon.
This episode definitely triggered that craving for giant parasites
well tbh that at the beginning was an understandable misunderstanding.
Lack of knowledge about the bugs and all treasure is gone
i won't deny.. i would have died to the sirens
They skipped the montage of Marc making the soap. It was done in the same style of the cooking montages in the manga, so kinda said about that.
The parasite is being prepared exactly like Japanese eel. It is delicious but sadly very rare. Japanese were overfished and thus are endangered and extremely difficult to farm. Which is a shame cause unagi don bowls are SO GOOD!
Senshi literally turned into Kuribo
The perfect time to reveal that you've eaten mermaid to your child is after they've seen the Disney movie.
21:28 We've been telling you the dub is good.
Definitely should watch this in English dub
Alicia be like:
Did you wash your ass today?
6:52 yeah right alicia you paused there cause you where confused about the fish, riiiiight
Elf’s eng voice actor is great to
Look... I ate raw pizza dough at one point while I worked at domino's... More than a few times...
it would be hilarious if your fiance could react alongside with you to this show, just to hear how he feels about and sympathizes with Laios haha
There is one thing that was missing from the manga you would have loved, THEY NERFED SENSHI'S TITIES
I really enjoy Dub, so much passion behind their rewording.
This is one of those anime that is 10x better in dub the jokes hit smoother in the dub same with konosuba
YES IT TURNS WHITE IRL THAT'S SO REALISTIC
Laois is a veritable Louis Armstrong.
Each time the video goes silent, the breathing ASMR kicks in. Lol.
The bigger the squid the greater the amount of ammonia on their body to keep them afloat in ocean and ammonia smells like piss and tastes so bitter.
WOW UA-cam, hiding the video until now
I love how chilchack here - i don’t know this dude, we are not together.
just wait till you find out what his favorite food is
