Rare Shark Feeding Frenzy in North Carolina

- Опубліковано 12 жов 2014
- On Thursday, October 9 at around noon, while at a retreat at Cape Lookout National Seashore off the coast of North Carolina, the leaders of One Harbor Church witnessed a shark feeding frenzy. The men were out fishing for the evening’s dinner when they stumbled across more than 100 sharks attacking a school of blue fish. As seagulls and pelicans joined in on the meal, the men began to cast into the surf, catching fish without the use of bait. For more than five minutes, the sharks were observed swimming in and out of the surf, some of which became beached in the fury. Donnie Griggs, the cameraman who captured the footage, is an avid waterman who spearfishes, dives, swims and surfs at Cape Lookout often. We want it to be clear that Cape Lookout and the surrounding beaches of Eastern North Carolina are extremely safe for swimming. The presence of these sharks and large schools of fish is actually a sign of a very healthy ecosystem.

This happens every fall, you have to be at the right place at the right time. Finger mullets are making the run out the inlet, the drum are waiting for them and the sharks are waiting for the drum. I have seen this 10-=15 times in my 25 years on the NC coast fishing. I have had to jump as the sharks go between my legs while casting to the drum. Its a special thing to witness, I do charter and for more info and if you want to see this and catch one fish after the other let me know.
What sharks are those, do they bite people ?
I'm here now how do I contact you
"extremely safe for swimming"? for sharks, yes
This looks like an ideal place for me to work on my shark-wrangling skills.
First ever viral video that was actually shot horizontally.
Toby Roberts Oops, that's what I meant.

WOW thank you for catching that and sharing it with us all! What a sight to behold in the wild! I would have never seen it otherwise!
Awesome video! I love it when they feed like that!
Ooh its you
Yo
I love it when they feed like that and hopefully next time you're swimming there too
Thank you for filming this :)
This is where Chuck Norris takes his morning swim!
(yeah chuck again, problem?)

You meant to say...... There is no such things as tornadoes, Chuck Norris just doesn't like trailer parks.......

Tomorrow is the 4th of July, and we are going to open for business. It's going to be our best summer in years. If you're so concerned about the beaches, you two, you do whatever you have to to keep them safe, but with you or without you, those beaches will be open for this weekend.
It's not October and you posted this yesterday. That makes no sense!

Chuck Norris was swimming that day.
Edward White only because he was running from Bruce lee in Bruce Lee don't get in the water😂🤣😂🤣
Edward White yes those sharks was trying to get away from Chuck lol
Thank you for the great video and I respect you for letting the shark go in strad of killing it. We need more fishermen like you two. Thanks again. Zoltan
I've seen Blues push the mullet up on the shoreline twice in my lifetime and it is rare, but never the sharks, what a rush! We raced to tie on silver spoons to pull in Bluefish at Harkers in 1993. Okracoke was where the second encounter.. it was so amazing. I say ban the commercials , pay the locals to oversee, manage, be the caretakers of the greatest gem North Carolina holds (to me), The Outer Banks, there' no place on earth like it.

Finally they are back! We needed the sharks back since the sting rays have been consuming all the scallops and other species. Thankfully they are back!
They may qualify to be labeled "Keystone" animals by which is meant that in eating stingrays as you say, they support and defend the healthy population of the entire eco culture of the area. I hope that is true. I've seen too many bodies of dead ocean areas for my liking.
Species go extinct naturally. It has happened for millions of years. It does not ‘upset’ any type of balance. What happens is a ‘gap’ opens up in the eco system and a species evolves to McGill it. Extinction is a perfectly natural even.
You have action like that and only record for 1:33?
I saw the same kind of sharks feeding on some type of bait fish at Edisto Beach State this past weekend. There were 100s of sharks, maybe 1000. It was spread over about 1/4 mile square, starting just beyond the breakers. Lasted about 20 minutes with surface strikes, some of them jumping strikes, about every 5 seconds. Lots of pelicans joining in on the spectacle. Amazing to see. I go to various beaches in the area about once a week from 1st of May to the end of October and have never seen anything like it before.
No video? Sounds so amazing. I wish I was there! So lucky!
Awesome footage! Bait must have been stacked!
Great footage! Would have loved to see this in person. What kind of sharks are they? Were they all the same? Does this happen a lot there, or annually?
I like that this is a viral video that was shot properly in landscape and not portrait. Good job!
I was on the Cape Lookout National Seashore last week with the DIFF Fall Fishing Tournament and saw one of these shark feeding frenzies. I was so amazed that I forgot to take a video. Thanks for the picture. By the way, we were catching bluefish with Hopkins Lures when we saw the sharks down the beach. I was not afraid, but then, I did not get in the water. Thanks for getting this great video.
Oh my god!!!! That is incredible!!!!! I"ve never seen anything like that!!!!
Wow we go there every year, never saw anything like that before.
Wow.that is a lot of sharks.good thing you got that on film! Nice video!
Thank You for sharing this video Mr. Recker.
This would be amazing to see first hand!
Wow, that's an awesome video. I vacation in Ocracoke every summer, and I never venture into the water there when I'm on the beach!
Does anybody know why they are feeding like that or what they are feeding on? I’ve never seen anything like that so close to shore. Great video …tell me more about what’s happening please.
There’s recorded events of humans getting caught in these frenzies
Remind me to never go to the beach in North Carolina....
I've gone to the beach in NC every summer for 17 years. I've never seen this before.
Yes, please never come....
Yes the beaches in North Carolina are remarkably dangerous. Everyone stay away from NC and save your lives.
No damn way. Risk coming to NC and you might die. Keep away!
Piss off you drooling ass-clown.
Remarkable footage of a natural event. These sharks likely migrating south, loading up on calories! Count your toes!
You're going to need a bigger beach.

Bad time to get in the water? LOL 😆😆 Amazing video. Thanks for sharing. If it wasn't filmed, I wouldn't have believed it.
wow this is great footage..... thanks for the upload...!!! thumbs up from...

Wow! Truly amazing footage.
Incredible & fantastic! Thank you very much!!!!
I mean if you're a bird and you get eaten by a shark...you're just fail.
Why? Birds eat from the sea, and just like a zebra drinks from the river, the jaws of death lie below the surface of life sustaining water.
The sharks are going after some baitfish, which the birds also want too.
it is pretty easy to spot sharks from the air, pretty stupid to try and steal their food.
Wow! A whole beach full of nope.
I am so jealous, what an AMAZING experience!!!
Loving this vid!!! Shame it's so short!!! Look at all these partying sharkies!!!
wow so cool!! what an awesome experience, would love to get a chance to see something so awesome!
Everyone lets go swimming!
I am all for swimming with the Sharks.... No biggie all the can do is eat me..
+Erica Miller lol
it'll be great we can even invite the in laws
I like the chuck noris joke! amazing video you dont get to see this everyday, very rare footage,
Great capture Brian Recker!
I am a dog, and I enjoyed this video.
And this is why I almost never swim in the ocean.
Wow, this video is absolutely amazing!! What kind of sharks are these? Also doesn't sharks usually repeat patterns like feeding and mating in same places, could this be a problem at this beach in North Carolina?
Legends says that shark is still swimming towards the sea
That was amazing!
Guess I'll just sit on the sand from now on.
We see fd
You may go in deep waters as they come out to land.
Why we got a beach house with a POOL this year.
😅😂🤣😳🙄🤔. Me too!
To all the ppl that think sharks aren’t close to shore. They aren’t always that many but there are always sharks around
Love it! Nature is amazing.
This is incredible!!! Wish I'd been there for this!! What kind of sharks are these?? Duskys, Browns?? Is this rare or would they normally follow blues into the shallows like this?? Just wondering if it's possible for a repeat pattern to start happening like this since they usually go to the same places for feeding, mating, etc...
Probably the annual black tip migration; but, I'm just guessing.
What if all of a sudden a tornado shows up?
Sharknado wouldn't look so stupid now, would it?
Omg so true
Wow! That’s absolutely crazy!😮
I didn't know the TEA party was out campaigning by the beach....
True. After all the Tea Party would destroy Democrats and Republicans.
Independent here. The Ds and Rs both suck and are only out for themselves. I hope you have a very nice day. :)
Yea, they're waiting for liberals to come by and pet them and hold them
I was hoping one would wash up all the way ashore, because, hey, free shark!
That is horrible. I hope you were joking.
Bree Wood
"Horrible"??? Really??? I hope YOU are joking.
Bree Wood you must be some screwed up brain liberal. What is so "horrible" about what BBnanner said?
greendesert69
Why in the world are you turning a video about sharks into a political commentary?
Chazzwassah Because he's a troll and you are literally doing exactly what he wants. Feeding him.

That is amazing!
Wow. We were there in early July for the hurricane. And now... sharks. What's next?

Sharknado!!!
Edward Harris Saracens.
Frank Hill Now there's a word I haven't heard anyone use in a while. You been studying the period of the Crusades? But I'm not sure what correlation you were trying to covey? Were you saying that Muslims are sharks? Or like sharks? Or Arabs in general are like sharks? Maybe you meant they were "Man Eaters" like in the song? But that song was referring to a "Man Eater" woman, lol. Or maybe you just wanted to see if anyone would respond to that word? :-) Have a Great Day! I'm outta here for now.
Great video!
Wonderful images!!!
"the waters are very safe to swim" umm ya doesn't look like it
Must not know the obx..
Amazing video! To think that we can encounter a shark at knee deep water? Amazing
More like toe deep at some points
most shark attacks happens at knee depp water
you have stupid ass videos
@@fabiankristoffersen3298that’s because that’s how deep most people get in the ocean 😂
Go to South Carolina, Myrtle Beach. I've never seen a shark close to the shore before there but I have seen a huge shark by the peer (it's not there anymore, hurricane got it) and the shark swam up and ate a little shark. You can go really far out and not get eaten by a shark though but regardless there's always gonna be sharks in the ocean
This is perfectly normal, I saw this in Asbury Park one morning but never mentioned it to anyone because lifeguard season is long over.
oo, how many shark..

Except this would be much safer.
I had actually just been on that beach the week before this was posted.
That would be so awesome to see in person!
Where are these sharks at when my girlfriend wants to drag me on her romantic walks through the waves?? Hope they would show up eventually...................
They're out there. Don't ever doubt it. Sometimes as close as 5-10 feet.
I guess I'll have to risk it and wade out further with her.............
Marc L. Maybe you should break up with her instead?? Just saying...
Dude, its your girlfriend if you really love her you should join her on that sort of walks and not want to kill her
I'm still amazed at how most obvious things just fly over peoples heads.........
LETS GO SWIM WITH THE FISHIES!!!!!!!!!!
The presence of these sharks and large schools of fish is actually a sign of very hungry sharks, have a nice swim!
The shark coming up the beach looks like it’s coming to show what it’s got that so nice and funny to watch it’s chewed me up no end
so much for being safe in shallow water
Eh? Its a well known fact that most shark attacks occur in 3 ft or less.
@@surfinmuso37because most people don’t go deeper than that lol 😅
one nope for every shark
Those guys look like happy dogs.
That is INSANE!!!!! Soooo many sharks and seagulls! I thought this was clickbait!
Why would anyone give a "thumbs down" to this video? Are you just THAT afraid of sharks? This was an awesome event, thank you to whomever posted it for the rest of us to see!
What are they doing on the beach?

I know it would be dangerous and stupid....but i want to try and run through all those sharks :/
Dolphins and other marine mammals have horizontal tail fins, sharks and other fish have vertical tail fins. These are clearly sharks.
Looks like we're gonna need a bigger boat
Wow! This is awesome! That's my favorite beach in all of NC! Isn't God amazing? I love your church too. I wish it had been there when I was at the Duke Marine Lab. I ended up going to Purvis Chapel and loved every minute of it there. Hope to visit again in 2015.
If you’re wondering why the reef sharks were there, the man with the hat had a bag of weed in his pocket. 😆
Im never going to forget this video, am I?
Excellent! Right time right place.
Woah ! We live near Wilmington...50miles south...
Good idea to know when the blue fish are running
Wow!

Sharks are such beautiful creatures
Awesome. Beautiful. Thanks for sharking, er, SHARING.
I've seen that in North Myrtle. So crazy. Everybody was just frozen watching it.
Plot Twist: They're all dolphins.
No, they're not. The ones that were beached were clearly sharks, and this is shark behavior. This was actually a brilliant feeding strategy, as bluefish were probably chasing bunker or other small fish against the surf, so the sharks just did their job as the next link on the food chain.
Im not saying they were actual dolphins lol. It's a common joke on tons of social media outlets.
Kristin Patton and much like "Darude - Sandstorm" it wasn't funny.
To each their own I suppose :)
Kristin Patton It was funny #plottwist
i found this intresting. i go to the outer banks eve year for vacation, and ive only ever seen one shark. that was this year. also big stingrays have been jumping out of the water right where the waves break. and they are big too. we asked the aquarium manager, and they said theve seen nothing like it. make you wonder...
Sandsharks. We used to catch lots of them at the Cape back in the early 80's. The lighthouse was closed back then and deserted. Just us out there in a Sea Oz boat coming up from Morehead. Thanks for sharing guys.
That was actually, kinda cool to watch. :D
beautiful..i love sharks
sharks don't love u.
" Fish are Friends, not Food." =))
Tardisius VEGITARIAN
Tell that to the next shark you meet
This happened when we were in the Outer Banks a few years ago. Crazy to see it.
Sharknado was predicting the future!!! WOW!! LOL
why would someone think this is sad? or that something is wrong, this is a way sharks have developed to catch a lot of small fish in one place, they drive a lot of small fish towards the shore, then it's easy to pick them off, they are trying to load up on calories and store energy, this is a much more efficient way to do that, then to have to chase each fish, which would burn almost as many calories as what they took in
No the sad part was reading that some of them became beached. I'd probably actually try helping and dragging it back to the water,
Bree Wood Good way to get your foot bit in the process, I'd say.
Duuuh agree with you
Wait what caused the sharks to swim all the way up the shoreline like that?
Food
Lots of bluefish.
The video description caused them to come to the shore...
military weapon experiments unfortunately
they heard trump may win the election and were trying to commit suicide. Even sharks are smarter than trumptards.
This is sharks on a beach vacation enjoying an all you can eat buffet.
One time I was out surfing by Bob Hall Pier in Corpus. We could see there was more people than normal fishing the pier and they were pulling in a lot of big fish. When we were done surfing, we went up on the pier to see what they pulling in. It was sharks. The whole pier was lined with 100's of sharks. Mostly smaller sharks but a few decent sized ones. It was still enough to send a chill down my spine.
