      We still use both at UNT (Class of '07). Our official mascot is Scrappy the Eagle. Our unofficial mascot is "Mean" Joe Green. (Oh, and our campus was used to film "Necessary Roughness." The stories about Sinbad tearing up Fry Street are legendary.)

    Chuck Noll's very 1st pick was a young DT from North Texas State who transformed the Pittsburgh Steelers from the laughing stock of the NFL to the most dominant franchise in the Super Bowl era. Mean Joe invented a stance called the "Stunt 4-3" where he would line up between the guard and center forcing a double team clearing rush lanes for L. C. and Dwight White and allowed Jack Lambert to roam around untouched at times straight to the ball carrier. He sacrificed his own stats for the good of the team and his rewards are 10 pro bowls, 4 Super Bowl rings and a spot in the Hall of Fame. When Greene retired in 1981, the Steelers in essence retired his position because the team went from a 4-3 to a 3-4 . Like the kid in his commercial, I have to say Thanks Mean Joe for making me a lifelong Steeler fan .

    There hasn't been a better, more consistent, intimidating defense in the NFL since the '70s Steelers. The '80s Bears and the '00s Ravens came close, but even they don't top the Steelers. How many defenders on that team are Hall-of-Famers? Five? Six?
    Lambert once said, "It's pretty cool being in the defensive huddle at the Pro-Bowl and looking up and seeing seven or eight guys with Steelers helmets."

    Definitely gotta give Mean Joe Greene praise no matter what fan you are because he was the start of the "Steel Curtain," the greatest defense in NFL history because of it's sheer dominance not just for one season, but multiple seasons that resulted in 4 Super Bowls in 6 years! The 85 Bears defense might have had the best defense for a season, but the Steel Curtain without a doubt beats what any defense accomplished over a 6 yr stretch!

Joe went and sacked Dan Pastorini on four straight downs to seal the game (He had 5 for the game). He could take a game over just like that

    If you are a Pittsburgh Steeler fan, Charles Edward "Joe" Greene is where it all started. The Steelers became the Steelers in 1969 when Joe Greene was taken first from North Texas State in Denton, Texas and they started to win. They got more good and great players later ( Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, Jack Lambert, you can go on and on), but it started with Joe Greene, which is why he is the highest ranked Steeler on the Top 100 list.
    BTW, I called him Charles Edward Greene because it was his true given name. He was nicknamed Joe from Joe Louis.

    Mean Joe was the anchor of the greatest NFL defense ever....The Steel Curtain. The 1976 version produced an unheard of *5 shutouts* of the opposing team and 2 more games they held the opponent to only a fg (3 points). Didn't make it to the
    Super Bowl that year, as their 2 star RB's (Franco Harris & Rocky Bleier) both were injured in a 1rst round playoff blowout over
    the Colts 40-14 and couldn't play in the AFC Championship game.

    The 1976 team doesn’t get enough credit because we didnt win the Super bowl, but that’s because Franco and rocky both got hurt in the playoffs. IMO the 1976 Steelers, when healthy, were the absolute number 1 team to ever play the game. I would choose them over any team, current or past. They were just too damn good. (Correct me if I’m wrong but I do believe that was the year where we posted 4 consecutive shutouts at the end of the season. I’m fairly certain it was 76, but it might not be.)

Joe couldn't bench press his own weight, but had natural strength you can't get in a weight room. Peaked in 1974 when he invented the stunt 4-3. During 1974 playoff run, He and Fats clogged the defensive line and totally obliterated two of the greatest offenses of the day... Raiders and Vikings. Watching that 1974 playoff team, there was no doubt they were going to win the SB with that defense cuz of Joe Greene's stunt 4-3.

    • @TheJMSESQ
      @TheJMSESQ 7 років тому +7

      Sacks were not an official NFL stat until 1982 or so, whatever LT's 2nd year in the league was.

    • @BadMoonRising92
      @BadMoonRising92 7 років тому +6

      Not a biased Steelers fan! lol it took the league a really long time to start counting sacks as a stat. There's a ton of really good players who's sacks were never recorded. Look up Gino Marchetti. This Guy would get multiple sacks a game but unfortunately for him you can't support guys like him with statistics because they didn't record any of his sacks

    • @TheJMSESQ
      @TheJMSESQ 7 років тому +5

      BadMoonRising92 i think it's a relevant but entirely overrated statistic myself. Even w/guys like Green, Reggie, LT, etc. it only told a part of the story. Those guys could stuff the running game, hold containment on the edges, bat away pass attempts and in LT's case cover receivers. Conversely, you have players like Derrick Thomas (RIP) who were sack machines but complete liabilities in the other 2 aspects of the defense.

    • @1983jblack
      @1983jblack 6 років тому

      Unofficially he only had 66.5 sacks with a career high 11.5 in 1972. That same year, it's been said he sacked Oilers QB Dan Pastorini on four straight downs to seal a late season win in the Astrodome and put Pittsburgh in the playoffs. The following week they clinched their division against San Diego.
