Hi, Why not make an episode about EDC that is TSA friendly. For those who travel for business, it would be an awesome video-i know many people would be in the same boat. Thanks for the work you do. It is a very informative and innovative way to present the material. Love the store-waiting on more items to be stocked. Cheers!
I have been carrying the Leatherman Style PS for a few months. The scissors are sharp and effective, and open up flat enough to use as a small knife. I’ve used it to cut paracord, boxes, and do some lightweight projects. I go through security at least twice a week. Most of the time, TSA lets it pass through without looking. Once in a while they pull it out, show it to their boss and colleagues, then smile and say, “cool!”. It’s not ideal, but it’s better than nothing. It’s small and well designed. I have a short loop of paracord around a front belt loop that I clip the tool on and it discretely hangs into my front pocket. No one has ever asked me about what’s down there because, ...well, that would be inappropriate. ;-)
When I was a Boy Scout, we had lanyards that we could put on the pocket flap button. The beads were of different colors, which were for different kinds of activities, like winter camping with sub-freezing temperatures, emergency service to the community, going to a national Scout camp/trek or World Jamboree, earning a higher rank, perfect attendence for a whoole year, etc.
We used to work in the field and our friend “Cholo” showed us how using different knots/beads makes it easier to go and grab the exact item/tool you want without digging inside a bag. Specially useful in the dark and to get items out without reaching in with dirty hands while working
The main demographic for EDC does not have dirty hands, nor are they operating out of a bad at night. They work cushy desk jobs. They only take out their knife to open their Amazon Prime box.
I think it gets to a point of being ridiculous when he is more concerned about how things look (brass, copper, beads, etc) than how equipment functions. It seems to be all about showing off what's inside your pockets. I'd feel silly saying to someone "Hey, do you want to see what's in my pockets?
Idk, for me I looked this up bc I needed ideas to help grab the right tool (multi-tool vs knife vs pen vs light) out of my pocket organizer. Aesthetics are a bonus.
Very nice regarding stuff in the "utility" pocket. I've always liked that pocket but never used it after having stuff destroyed in the laundry or simply because it's so fiddly to get stuff out of it.. Totally new to this whole world of EDC. I have a tendency to get quite nerdy with whatever I do, whether it's rock climbing or photography. I can tell right away that these EDC-waters are some treacherous ones 🐡
If it's a longer lanyard with multiple beads on a little EDC knife, they could be pace beads. But that's if you take it out camping/hunting/hiking/etc.
For me it’s mostly just easier to pull out, whether it be mixed up with my keys and other junk or clipped to my pocket grabbing a lanyard means I know the orientation and the item I’m grabbing. They do make them look better too, less naked, it’s like a knife hat.
I use a piece of para-chord with the reflectors in it. Super easy to find in the dark as it lights up when you hit it with a flashlight. Especially handy tip for any dad's with boyscouts.
New to the edc scene. Never knew it was actually a thing. Recently started watching these vids and have been wondering about these lil lanyard thingys lol. Glad I stumbled onto this video
With a decent length Paracord lanyard it can double up as an emergency spare boot/shoe lace when outdoors or even minor repairs to backpacks and the like.
I just tried that snake knot and it came out pretty good. I used the inner core of a lanyard for glassed and the bead and 2 small rubber tube inserts that was on it and it works great for pulling from the pocket. Especially considering I have a deep pocket clip. It really works great.
used to work in helicopters with the doors off, lanyards may be "stylish" but they're also a good way to keep your knife from flying into the tail rotor and killing everyone!
Always surprising with the themes 😉 I became used to use lanyards with or without beads in my gear and even wallet! Practical or not they add some personality! Thanks for the vid 👍
Just an FYI. When I fist started putting lanyards on my folders it was purely for utilitarian purposes. When I hunted I would usually carry a longer bladed fixed-blade and a folder for gutting and skinning the animal. The fixed-blade I would use for initial cutting, but then I'd start using the folder once I got into the cavity and then for skinning. Sometime I would need to go to the fixed blade to chop through some bone. That left me with a bloody folder that I didn't want to put down in the dirt, so I would usually add a simple lanyard that merely consisted of a simple loop of paracord. This would allow me to hang the folder (still open and bloody) from a snapped off tree branch next to where I'd be gutting/skinning the animal. Later on I started doing knots and beads, but even now, if it is a knife I plan on using for skinning I'll make sure to include a loop so that I can easily hang it from something next to me, while I'm doing the work.
Retrieving an object like a small aluminium or plastic flashlight is why I use lanyards. Dropped a couple in bilge of a boat couldn't retrieve with a magnet a lanyard allowed retrieval with broomstick and a stiff wire shaped in a hook.
I recently found out great copper and brass beads on AliExpress. Right now (corona summer 2020) it takes a long time to ship them but they are significantly cheaper than in other stores/platforms.
I'm with you. I have a lanyard on just about every knife I own. I will be checking out new knives and I notice no lanyard hole It won't ever be mine. I know I have spent hundreds just on lanyard beads. Sometimes I might get a special knife well it will probably get a nice lanyard and bead. I like lanyards because it makes pocket draw a whole lot faster.
I clicked on this out of morbid curiosity to see what would be said. I have to say I was cheering in the first minutes. "Style." Best and most honest answer I've ever heard! Thanks!
Just a helpful suggestion: it would be easier to see what you are doing as far as making knots with paracord if you had a bright color paracord and a white background. (Dark paracord is difficult to see when you are making movements with it and the background you used had a pattern, part of which the color of your paracord blended into).
Great video! Just learned to tie a leather diamond knot this week. Gotta be careful to keep the finished side of the leather lace facing out, but quit satisfying to achieve. Peace!
if you buy veg tan leather "lace" from somewhere like tandy, you could also dye the leather any colour you want. or buy a simple strap/lace cutter and make your own out of which ever leather you like.
This video just convinced me to try edc-ing a knife with a lanyard...my black tusk arete got a lanyard made of a piece of lace from my retired work boots(which also gave a piece of leather for a shifty homemade strop lol) and for a bead I simply used one of those deals they wrap a wire through for electric motors hahaha if I like the idea I'm buying some leather strap and parachord
I'm a little late to this video, but thanks for the brief shoutout Taylor! I always enjoy watching your EDC content, been watching your stuff since the MOD days haha. Keep up the great work!
Great video, I have a few Kershaw knives for EDC and it appears the Lanyards would not work because the holes or areas to connect would be deep in my pocket versus hanging out to be easy to grab. I have the Kershaw Blur and Onion.
I find it easier to pull my knife from my pocket and I seem to drop my knife less when putting it back in my pocket if I have a lanyard. It also looks cool.
Nice presentation: I am a couple of years late getting into collection knives so I have a vast library of past UA-cam videos to watch. love your channel. You could also cut your lanyard material a little longer to make tying the snake knot a little easier- then trim the tag ends exactly where you want them to be. At current Amazon prices for the brown Latigo leather lace, it is only about 3 cents ($ .03) per inch.
Probably already mentioned somewhere and I'm late to the party, but for those who are in the woods or in nature in general, a blaze orange lanyard can help you find it if you drop it.
my own "poor's man" bead version: a brass nut of the proper size to have a snug fit (it depends on the lanyards material), a file/drill bit/reamer to remove the threads and you're good to go
I know this video is a couple years old.....what is that beautiful folding knife you are using to cut the leather with? I LIKE the looks of that blade!!
Yeah, it is like a zipper pull. Makes my tools easier to find, deploy, and grip. My knife lanyard bead is titanium and has a tritium ring. Almost everything I carry has a lanyard with a titanium micro pear carabiner. My front pocket wallet has a lanyard with a small decorative weight on the end. The "weight" can be a micro flashlight, a religious figure, or a toy. It functions as my other lanyards but additionally, it provides an extra bit of sensory security warning for pickpockets or accidental loss (like a dummy cord or wallet chain) and it is an effective and completely legal monkeyfist. Finally, one special longer lanyard hanging from my compass is my pace counter beads (always non-metallic).
I typically do the diamond knot with the ends buried back into the knot itself. My main reason being I don't have any cool beads hanging around. Entertaining vid as always!
It serves a purpose on knives like the CRKT minimalist series, you mentioned that wasp thing I have not seen yet, but I guess it is the same thing. It actually is in the way sometimes. I own a Victorinox rescue tool and using the glass saw, it dangles around. That's the problem with multitools that have tools on both ends of the handle. I tend to only upgrade my edc with lanyards and beads when I get bored. If I don't get the stuff out properly, it's time to rethink the way I am carrying. I would rather invest more money on my gear than on a bead, but that is just me. Good vid as always, man!
Another reason for a lanyard: My phone is a Samsung S8 and I do not like cases on it. That means it's dangerous for it to share a pocket with anything metal. However, I put a snake-braided paracord lanyard on a knife that's about equal to its length. If that knife and my phone share a pocket, my phone rubs against the soft nylon of the lanyard, not the hard metal of the knife, keeping it from getting scratched to hell.
Great video Thank you for the walk through. I’m so glad you took time to explain and show us different examples. Great info and options on your preferences.👍
Steelie, electrical transformer, nut, stubby bolt, a die, a mouse ball, a golf ball, dead battery (maybe) Whatever you got you can wrap in a Monkey's Fist (specific knot)
Were u talking about that little jean pocket inside your right pocket? That was originally meant for pocket watches in the 1800s, it's called a watch pocket I think, I keep my zippo in it.
great vid man! also not sure if you covered this but I like a longer lanyard I can get my hand in so incase a defensive situation arises your knife doesn't become their knife. keep up the great work bro!
Can you please go over how you sharpen your blades i really need help I have a knife that has been passed down to me from my grand father and I need help getting a edge back on it
please make an episode on Coast flashlights. they are really affordable and have pretty good reviews. in addition, they seem to be very versatile for EDC as well as other (tactical, home use, etc...). thank you in advance!
It’s funny that you mentioned Star Wars bead because I recently purchased a Darth Vader bead and was watching your video to find a better way to make a lanyard for it.
I use long lanyards that I have attached to my belt, or in my bag for 2 reasons. People know that it's mine, and it's attached to prevent loss. I am far far more worried about losing my knives, as I live in Asia, and I have them shipped from Canada.
I get my leather strips by going to a second hand store and finding woven real leather belts for a few bucks. Then take the belts apart and now i have a lot of leather to do things like this. Only thing is that the leather may be thicker than used here.
Lanyards make it easier to keep track of smaller knives and extra gripping surface. Also, if a loop is used, added security. Use just a variety of nylon cords - para, tactical, micro. No beads. Started seeing your channel not long ago. Interesting stuff, but it seems that there are a lot of gear nerds that are out there and I wonder if they need to wear suspenders to hold up their pants after they load down their pockets?
Great video! Love this topic and I've been looking for good leather lace/string for lanyard for a while now, definitely grabbing one of these spools you linked!
I have a paracord lanyard on my ss spyderco endura since the endura has zero jumping anywhere except the spine of the spyder hole the lanyard is the perfect length that my hand will never slip onto the blade it loops around my finger we in use
Can't count how many times something i was working on or that needed to be cut was just out of my reach. I like my lanyards fist length so the index and thumb can grip the end of the handle scales when overeaching.
What a great vid, one thing I'm wondering is... What about EDC lighters? I usually always have a bic lighter on me but eventually wanna get something nicer
Thanks for the tutorial! Gonna try this on a few of my knives with some Paracord since that's just what I have. May grab some leather next time I'm in a hobby lobby though, looks awesome.
Another reason for a lanyard on a knife - if you're practicing your one-handed opening flick, put your pinky finger through the lanyard, and it stops the knife flying out of your hand!
Lanyard beads can be used to keep track of how many sets of steps you've taken, when you're navigating on foot. Per set, you slide the bead over (obviously, yours is not set up for this method). Bushcrafters and outdoorsmen use it in this way. It's probably as old as the indigenous people of the world are!
Another reason and use is that it extends the handle length for control. This helps along when hacking in a camping situation with a larger knife. Also they can be used as a pace counter (ranger bead style.
I like having a lanyard bc, if my hands are wet/dirty I can easily pull my knife out of my pocket w/o touching my pants...I work in a kitchen so this happens often.
Im sure lanyards have there place, as you have mentioned here on some of the equipment mentioned, and that’s fine. But, for me, if it’s not needed I’m definitely not putting one on just to make it look cool!
Awesome video! You should do a video on how to take better edc pictures or what you like to use as a background for the pictures. I see all these edc pictures with old wood backgrounds and have been thinking about making one for my edc pictures. Thanks!

There is no knife that is TSA friendly
Try the NERF Leatherman.

I feel like I'm watching the equivalent of jewelry and makeup with all this edc stuff.

@@cannonball666 Yeah it's a bunch of Barbi bullshit.
All this "EDC" buzz is annoying to me because of this. You're just obsessing way too much about it.

Carlos Gonzalo Gorrín Suárez you are. And that’s fine.
when people ask me why I have a lanyard, I always tell em "same reason tampons have a string" makes it easier to extract from my pocket.
Freaking Dwight lol
Even if you dont want it to be.
Absolute mad lad

you keep tampons in your pocket?
YES!! I just commented on IG asking how to tie that knot. You must’ve seen it. Thanks so much man.
I also use beads to identify my EDC by touch if I am carrying multiple items in one pocket, so I know I'm pulling out the right piece without looking.
One use i found for the lanyard is to slide my pinky inside and push forward to give me a bit more blade to work with keeping a more solid grip.

I've really come to like a lanyard on my pocket knife in the winter. Much easier to pull it out of pocket with gloves on.

You can also use a lanyard to prevent your hand from slipping forward unto the blade.
Great content as usual. Walker Thomas knot is another great option for tying up lose ends as well as tying beads on something.
I prefer a Figure-8 knot. I use it for sailing to terminate a line or sheet. It's easier to tie, and uses less line than the snake knot.
Another reason for a lanyard: My phone is a Samsung S8 and I do not like cases on it. That means it's dangerous for it to share a pocket with anything metal. Excellent video! Very classy stuff. Thank you for allowing the Chavez to make an appearance. Made my Day!
is it ok to use the hole on the deep carry clip to serve as a lanyard hole if my pocket knife has no lanyard hole?
Stumbled on your vid. Glad I did, really informative and the lanyard will definitely help getting the smaller ones out of my pocket. Thanks for this.
Great video
Thank you for the walk through. I’m so glad you took time to explain and show us different examples. Great info and options on your preferences.👍
An 8-10 inch piece of Paracord with a Nut or other heavy object tied on the end makes a good tether for deep pockets, inside a Coat or Self Defense.

The most important reason to have a lanyard is to attach valuable items to your Person or pack.
Thanks! I was wondering about the beads but then I figured it was to grab easier! 👍🏼 Now I know for sure!
Beads are like Air Jordan's, and about the same price!
Ridiculous prices, it's just marketing, they make us think we need them, but no bead is worth the asking price, not by a long way.....

When in the pocket will keep from sliding out of the pocket , the lanyard and bead, therefore less chance of loosing it .
Ps do not reply (you tube control)
Clip the tools so you don't lose them. If you are on the side of a wall or half way up a cliff and you drop your tool it's gone. 😎👍🇨🇦
Diamond knot for the win. That looks great
Lanyard beads can be used to keep track of how many sets of steps you've taken, when you're navigating on foot.
I remember beads on some line to track distance, your step determined when you would move a bead

lanyards are magnets for little hands.. "whats this pop?"..lol
thank you for the help 😊
Your “snake knot” is called a Bowline it’s one of the most useful knots ever
*Bowline
Slappy oops 😅 typed this as I passed out my bad
I like having a lanyard bc, if my hands are wet/dirty I can easily pull my knife out of my pocket w/o touching my pants...I work in a kitchen so this happens often.
Im sure lanyards have there place, as you have mentioned here on some of the equipment mentioned, and that’s fine. But, for me, if it’s not needed I’m definitely not putting one on just to make it look cool!
Got it, thanks forsharing. I also find a cool Lanyard Bead edc
Welp..another thing I can add to my EDC to personalize the collection!
Don't buy off these guys, they use subliminal marketing and aren't trust worthy I'm sure.
Thank you Taylor, This video was very helpful.
Do a video on acid and stone washing ?
Im gonna mark that last knot as just “unnecessary”... mostly because it boggles my mind. Lol!
Taylor, thanks mate... always such great content for the EDC aficionados... which cord width is the most recommended for making these lanyards ?
Awesome video! You should do a video on how to take better edc pictures or what you like to use as a background for the pictures. I see all these edc pictures with old wood backgrounds and have been thinking about making one for my edc pictures. Thanks!
Every time I see someone with Lanyard I think to myself that guy owns a 20 sided die.
funny, but for the fact you put yourself in the same category simply by knowing what a 20 sided die is... :)
We own a lot more than a single D20 😅
Nobody owns just 'one' d20 😉
