The government doesn't care, they constantly close off areas we could park. Abandoned scale houses, rest areas. They put no overnight parking at rest areas.

And then police act in a predatory manner and cite drivers not in legit spots in rest areas. And then you have states like Massachusetts that lock the door to the rest room in the rest areas from dusk to dawn. I NEVER received a parking ticket for parking on a ramp shoulder or a rest area shoulder until after the eld mandate took effect. Absolutely predatory.

I operated a heavy Haul buisness for a few years, the worst part was finding spots to park. I would find myself in impossible routs with absoluty no where to pull over and park, a few occasions I incurred fines by the police for continuing past curfew.
Sending large trucks for extremely long distances with no parking left ne with no choice but to continue driving.
I quite trucking because of tgis and the government. Its a horrible situation for trucks

This is just wild to me. Most cities/villages/towns have a minimum parking space requirement to stipulate the number of spots based on a buildings square footage and zoning type. I’ve been seeing this truck parking crisis in the news and I’m glad to see it’s gaining more attention.

    • @nlpnt

Minimum parking requirements are for cars and car-sized spaces.

  • @blahdebla

True. But the easiest solution to solve the parking crisis is to require more warehouses to work with truckers 24hrs or allow us to sleep at our destination. The parking problem is because all companies operate during the same 8-5 business hours making majority of trucks stop before nightfall if you want to get a Safe parkings space.

NAILED IT...!!! this is exactly what a local Warehouse here has done. for years they acted like "hard a$$e$" and wouldn't let drivers making deliveries park INSIDE their yard, but this would force drivers to park along the outside perimeter road, which would then get the drivers in constant trouble with the Police. right so after the Fuel Truck accident and fire that took out a small section of bridge over 95 outside of Philly June 11th 2023 then got followed up by the ENTIRETY OF THE KEY BRIDGE near the Port of Baltimore being taken out by that errant Container Ship March 28th 2024, they have finally been FORCED to do what they really should've been doing all along...
yeah they've now capitulated and cleared space for 20 early night arrivals, with spill-over for an additional 10 on heavy days. it's literally a WIN-WIN-WIN situation for all concerned. the Warehouse gets what it needs (since the delivery Drivers are supporting their business anyway), the incoming Drivers get to find a park spot (stress free) and immediately go to sleep, and the Police get the clear and safe roads they want for the local community...
again, observe how it took 2 disasters (possibly 3 if you count the 2020 arrival of the Global Pandemic) for them to "smarten up" and start doing what they should've ALREADY been doing for the last 20 years...?

How hard is it to build a parking lot

Free parking almost everywhere vs paid parking to gain back investments. How does that make sense? According to the free market, if someone sees opportunity, they will take it. Truck stops have tons of parking and are private but why is there a parking shortage?

I deliver new school buses out of Tulsa, OK. I'm not full time and I only pick close deliveries (a couple of states). I travel I-44 quite a bit. It is heavy with truckers. I wouldn't want to do this full time. 2 U.S. Rep's are from Missouri. 1. Sam Graves is the chair of Transportation and the 2nd is my U.S. Rep Eric Burlison. I've been talking to Eric (he lives in the same County as I do) about rules and regulations with DOT. I hope others reach out to Eric as he's a great elected official to work with!

We can't build rail roads it would consume waste swaths of land to rails. Think about all the truckers who will loose their jobs if we swap to nationalized rail. only problem is we need to dedicate waste swaths of land to trucker parking. That makes total sense

What pisses me off is when there are several empty spaces to park but the truck stop expect you to pay for the spot. They don't care how tired you are or if you are out of hours. It's either pay or leave & they don't mind waking you up to tell you.

  • @JIm-w1b
    @JIm-w1b Місяць тому +2

I doubt even $200 million will make much difference, the new spaces will quickly fill up and you'll still have the shortage problem

OK, I'll say it. We have the ONLY plan that will address this problem aggressively and fix it from within, without Chapstick and ass kissing. All of these so-called trucking publications, advocacy and agencies need to draw a line in the sand. Are you trucking or are you BROKERING. So many of these "Trucking" industry experts have bent the knee to brokers because they can't imagine what we are going to do. I hope that they will all ralley behind us simply because we have trucking, carriers and drivers at the core of our creation. No room for brokers.

The government should crack down on the shippers and receivers release huge parking lots are half empty force them to have OTR parking on their property or charge them a fee for not having OTR parking on their property. Same thing with the lumper fee they need to get rid of that damn thing to the company should be paying for their shit to get put on the truck or off the truck.

I am not a truck driver but respect truck drivers and traverse the state. Never enough pull off area and local communities highway adjacent do everything they can to keep them out. Truckers feed us and provide everything to us, the least we could do is be a good neighbor is give them areas to park, rest or sleep.

  • @fk4515

Instead of doling out all of that government money of which 2/3s will disappear between the grant and the project how about the government mandate the states provide adequate parking along the interstates as part of their requirements to receive federal highway money. Allow states to provide incentives to private businesses to build and maintain truck parking. In many localities the local city, county or state government will tax the parking lot owner for processing storm water runoff; that money is collected by an assessment per square foot of impervious surface and unfortunately some municipalities have used storm water fees as a cash cow. If states refuse to build parking calculate how much parking is needed and allow the federal government to establish tax free zones where public truck parking land is exempt from storm water and property taxes. This would give state and local governments to plan for parking and either provide it on the tax funds or forego the tax revenue on those locations that are providing parking with private funds.

I think there is a shortage of rest areas in general. I think there are fewer rest areas on Georgia Interstates now than there were 20 years ago, and the ones that remain are far too far apart. On I-95, for instance, there is a northbound rest area/welcome center upon entering from Florida. And there are NO further rest areas on northbound I-95 in Georgia! The next one is the South Carolina rest area/welcome center, about 110 miles north! That is crazy and unacceptable, for cars AND trucks! The federal DOT should mandate a reasonable maximum spacing of rest areas, with an acceptable level of truck parking, on ALL rural Interstates nationwide.

These parking areas designated for big rig trucks are being used by travelling people's RV's, homeless peoples RV's, so theres none left for these truck drivers to park. This should not be allowed so truck drivers would always have a place to park their trucks.

I guess you do not recall the trucking industry in 2020. The mandate was lifted and everyone did just fine, just as they did prior to the mandated rules.
There is a balance between dystopian control and freedom of anarchy.
Those of us who do not require government intervention choose more toward freedom.
Those who require the mother hand of government lean more comfortably toward control of their lives.

Trucker here, in 2020 the mandate wasn’t completely lifted.. it was only in certain situations we were given leeway. It wasn’t like we had free reign to drive whenever we wanted And parking wasn’t that bad of in issue that year bc there was less trucks on the road at the time as well. Yes a more relaxed hos service violations would help but it’s not the fix. Bc certain places at night for long stretches there’s not going to be single safe place to park. So basically then it be the driver just going till the morning when spots open up on an extremely long day and then ask all of us not to abuse that. Which there most certainly will be more then a handful that do that. That was definitely not the case in 2020. Me personally I don’t want to be driving anywhere close to someone who has been up that long, driving tired. Respectfully this just comes down to lack of parking.

add EV parking charging needing 3 spots for every diesel unit , due to fire risk, and the fact it takes 4+ hours to charge 250 mile range compared to 15 minuets fuelling 800 +mile range , requiring EV a parking spot to charge, instead of drive through fuelling , imagine the line ups and dead trucks that are feet away but too drained to reach the charger and this is just fuelling \charging now get into mandatory rest periods cant find a spot now ,add EV, this is politics and policy's by people who either hate trucking or have no two clue what it takes to move our economies, economy does not move on a computer screen like wall street would have us believe , it moved by trucks, trains, boats and barges , and insanely more and more by plane
