You know I actually read these magazines as a kid. My parents couldn’t afford many toys so they subscribed to Zoobooks. Every week their would be a new magazine in the mail and I would be super excited. I learned a lot about animals and loved looking at the cool photos and drawings in it. My favorite was one entirely about Elephants. Thanks to this magazine, Elephants are now my favorite animal.
You need to understand the historical context; we had SO MANY World Wildlife Fund and similar organizations using elephants as the endangered species of the month to put Sarah MacLachland music to to get donations. Notice how you may SEE the other animals who got zoobooks, and know where they live but never heard which ones they are. Elephants were a hot button issue in wild animal marketing and Zoobooks, who could have decided to give ANY issue away for free, chose Elephants to help spread awareness about them so people knew what their money was going to protect. These commercials, I swear. Did they only put out 13 issues and then just keep selling the same stuff for 10-15 years? I think I saw every incarnation of the ad.
