Don't Underestimate This Pristine Mazda Familia GT-X | Under the Radar.

- Welcome back! Today I'm behind the wheel of a largely forgotten and misunderstood Group A homologation car from the 1990s, the Familia GT-X. This particular example is quite the stunner, having only clocked just over 56,000 kms in its lifetime so far. It was imported from Japan and now will likely live the rest of its life here in British Columbia, Canada... forever in search of the perfect dirt road in a jungle full of pavement dwellers. Enjoy!

Under the radar. Let's hope they stay this way.. Enjoy!
So reason I don't think so, I know a bloke who is restoring one and looks like he's restoring it to sell. He reckons he can get 30k in Australia for it easy.
There's to few of them to become known or popular. There were few ever made and most that were unfortunately have been thrashed, crashed or stolen and stripped for parts. Extremely rare car!!
They were common as in New Zealand my friend bought a black hatch in 2000 it was so dope, there were so many here.
I have the 2 door hatchback version of this (323/Familia GTX). Love the car, an amazing piece of history and super rare. Its a head turner for sure!
Didnt know it came 4 door with the turbo engine
Mazda really knew how to made a well balanced car back then. Had a few myself.
I had one of these, same colour and year too! Made a few under the hood tweaks and upgraded suspension, but kept the paint and trim original, such a great little car. It also appeared on Gran Turismo 2. Ahhh the memories! Cheers.
The turbo light on the dash! Cool car cool guy cool story! Thanks for sharing!
Turbo light are the best. I owned a Suzuki Forsa Turbo for a summer and it had a boost light too. It was ALWAYS on.
One of the most underrated vehicles on the planet. dirt cheap where im from and the bp is so hard to find. im building one for mine now. the 1600 has great top end so i can just imagine the 1800 bp. thanks to the miata parts are readily available from the crank up. i always hated mazda til i got one. cars are a diamond in the rough!
This video made me miss my 323 (GT-R clone). Had it at 400hp right before I sold it 💔
I love this whole video💯 i used to have a mazda familia GTX one of my biggest regret not keeping it🤦🏻♂️
Thanks! Great story. We'll definitely do a follow-up of sorts with Coleton once his Skyline is back on the road.
Love my gtr so much, such a fun little hatch with the drivability of a semi modern grocery getter and the character of a punchy mountain road monster
I own the Mazda Familia GT-R. Had it for 14 years. I use to own a GT-X 4 door. Wish I kept it but I got an Evo IV when I sold it
You have good taste my friend
This GT-X looks beautiful. I love the BG chassis looks.
The hatch GTX's and & GT-R's are rare AF and just as expensive to match.
Wow. I had one of these 4 doors in NZ in this very color back in the 90's!
It was such a cool car, did the exhaust and air filter, plus removed the 180kmh speed limiter.
nostalgia!
This is why I like your channel, you find some cool cars and owners. Throttle down from Chicago
I come back to this video every couple of months, the car in this video just feels so raw. The 323/Familia GT-R and Mirage Cyborg R are my dream cars.
I've always wanted the 323GTX hatchback version that we got here in North America. Thanks for the video!
No problem! Possibly a video with Coleton's Familia GTR soon as well...
i had a 4 door version but it lacked the turbo.. man was it slow
Video didn't disappoint. Loves these old Mazda's. Want one so bad
🤘
My inner teen is beaming with joy right now!!!!
In NZ we had sooooo many of these
Now I’m in USA living and want one bad haha
Class…
Rip ur uncle,…he is missed.
I had a 94 Protege in the US, always lusted over this car.
One of my favorite Turbo 90s sport sedan
Awesome car... I love it...🎉
Love this car love the family connect as well and how his uncle brought him threw cars properly 😎😎✌✌👌👌👍👍
love this familia ❤️❤️❤️
That steering wheel is identical to the early non air bag Miata steering wheel... Very cool!
I have an on but with fwd and its awesome! This one is amazing
I have a 94 protege here in Puerto Rico, NA FWD sadly, but still and awesome car. I really love these things and wish they got more recognition.
I want one of these really bad lol
Would love to see a vid with an Evo 3 this nice.
These use to cost around $3k for a fairly decent one back in 2007 in NZ. Nobody wanted them really. They were just another vehicle that was used as a 'daily driver'. You could pick one up that had a 'few issues' for $1k. Those issues ranged from a gearbox crunch, clutch issue, or the turbo needing replacement. All parts mentioned for replacement cost stuff all. Miss those days.
How about now?
@@tufluxed3293 10k for an average one or 20k for a minta. Around 2002 a mate had a hatchback one, he bought for 4k. Was very clean, but in stock form the thousands of jdm 20v 4age levin/corolla/trueno's could clean them up fairly easily... But add a boost tap and the mazda would put up a better fight.
As a previous owner off 323Fs and MX-3s.... The 323 GTR was the holly grail... 😛
Why Mx3 v6 have only 140hp should be 170.
Need mazdaspeed pistons, fuel pump injectors?
@@Ryan-fb1ot The MX-3 V6 is still only a 1.8 naturally aspirated without variable valve timing... 140 HP back in 1991 was good for a 1.8L car. The MX-3 V6 was no slouch ether.
130 mph top speed & 0-60 in 8secs flat was as good as any Euro Gti then.
@@265justy yes have v6 straight pipe rev to 7k sounds budget Ferrari
I have an 89 GTX hatch Rallycar. Theyr awesome.
This car same spec in Malaysia. But frontWD .good video dude .👍🏼
They did have a factory turbo miata, called the mazdaspeed miata mx-5. I think it made 180hp too.
Amazing car, I have to carb fwd version. Would love to go 4wd
I inherited a 1990 lx with a gtx swap. Still fwd but cars never left me stranded. As stated its just so hard to find parts for these things.
I had a '92 323, always wanted one of these or a GT-R. I've heard parts for both of these have been unobtainable for years now, worse than other old JDM.
It's so underated i recently found one I'm going to import from japan
prices exploding, parts rarer than diamonds
From the UK 🇬🇧 Can mind of the 323 but yeh only in Hatchback 3dr 5dr never seen this body style 😎
The only lwt down of these was the gearbox. Most people in nz go celica gt4 or evo drivetrain. UA-cam wrightmetals mazda gtx drags. And fast forward the video to about 1:40. Crazy ride and launching is mental
I need one of them drivetrains for my escort gt build. Going all wheel drive and wide body so I can fit some giant rubbers
on ROH Z's as well.... very NZ style... respect!
I love the look. Thanks for the insight!
Very strange to see these on a car outside of New Zealand
Please do one for a Astina 323F BG!
All good until you screw the pinion and crown wheel in the transfer case in gearbox. Had one, blew 3 gearboxes. Loved the car though 😊
We have that car in the Caribbean...
May I know for size rims and tire ? I have same color with that video but my car front wheels drive and no dohc engine
I used to own a 1990 protégé GT of which I believe only 2500. Mine was normally aspirated. Does anybody hear or no if there is some kind of club out there for these cars non-turbo, and normally aspirated? I’m thinking about buying a restored one or low mileage if I can find it.
Does the owner mind sharing his uncles name? The old Protege community was pretty tight back in the day. I bet he was a member of Club Protege
He was 323permin on the forums
Can we do a test drive of the 88/89 Mazda mx6 gt turbo
This car reminds me of my 91 Ford Escort GT that even had automatic seat belts but a less powerful engine
The Escort GT was sold in Australia as the Ford Laser TX3 & had the Mazda 1.8 N/A & Turbo engine's. The turbo model had an AWD drivetrain.
Same basic chassis as the escort GT's, the BG chassis. Same basic engine as well. I too have a 91 Escort GT. It's got an engine swap from a 323 GTR that they mention several times in this video :)
NOT A SLEEPER!!! With turbo badges all over !!!!!
I wonder how the stock ride was
He's needs to get his kid into this car...asap
Was wondering if this car would ever come up hope it doesn’t get allot of views 😤 jerk lol great vid
Thanks! :D
Even those go for 10k in Europe. JDM cars are just so blown out of proportion nowadays. 😫 you cant make the shit up they want for an old Mazda
Cause Mazda are 👍
I own a euro 323 and i want to put a KL-ZE 2.5 V6 in and the AWD system from a GTR or a GTX
Boi I have the 323 version!!!
even in newer protege the steering is really nice decent handling. I know some parts of japan and middle east they have 4wd Proteges last gen. same car newer model.
Is there like insta for this guy or something id like to follow his builds.
@bayside.pandem
but due to rust they suffer rust in front towers due to water intrusion and lack of maintenance on motor monts are filled with a corrosive liquid in them best to buy protge from florida or california
Where did you get the coilovers?
Came over with the car years ago, took them apart and rebuilt them in the garage
@@colep111 Thanks for the reply. I got a totally rust free 1991 323 hatch that I swapped out the 1.5l auto with a later 2.0l Ford Zetec (blasphemy). But it bolts right in since the 1991+ Escorts share the Mazda BG chassis. Even have an Zx2 S/R ecu to go with it. Upgraded suspension bits are non-existent. Even OE aftermarket parts have dried up. I could probably put something together, but was worried about mis-matched Springs and dampening. Let me know if you ever get your suspension sorted.
Awesome car BTW.
I got a turbo Canadian Gt weird my speedometer says 220km and she will do all of it lol
Hope he imported a couple of spare gearboxes, they were made of glass
Front bodypart convert to 2 doors GTX,
MAZDASPEED
in detschland nicht im angebot gewesen !!!
Import Japan, nz Wheels...rustted out 15yrs ago....WHEEL IS ROH "ZS"
106 lb-ft or 160 lb-ft?
Um if you don't get 70 mph 2nd ģear within 3 seconds from standing.. it's slow...this is what my evo 10 ďoes.. 3rd gear is 120 mph +
これはなぜ日本国内で流通されなかったのだろうか?
The most stolen car in New Zealand in the early 00s
These are rwd bias btw
43 front - 57 rear split
@@Tylerredrocket yep! He says fwd bias in the video!
Unfortunately, these 4 doors will just be used for parts cars for the hatches. The protege was and always will be the ugly BG step child.
