  • Monster Hunter has evolved drastically in Fifth Generation with locales that give a sense of space, but it's not a true Open World experience. Can Dragon's Dogma 2 provide inspiration for Capcom to build a true Open World Monster Hunter Game?

I don’t think making MH more like Dragons Dogma makes any sense at all. Why would you want two very similar IPs? Plus I don’t know if an open world would work well for the usual narrative of MH games. It’s about going out in a hunt and returning and preparing for the next. An open world doesn’t mesh with the idea of a single hub, hunting zones and the cycle of hunt to progress.

We have Monster Hunter Stories which seems to fit what hes asking for, some people forget that series part of the MH franchise exists.

It wouldn't be similar in any aspect besides the open world setting. As spyro115 mentions already, Monster Hunter Stories is an Open World experience already however it's a turn based game compared to action oriented. However I can understand if some people are used to having segmented locales, it's definitely been a staple of the series and I can see it continuing in future with the next generation

They can easily do a open world MH, seemless travelling from hub to biome to other biomes. Open world exploring would replace expeditions. You'd pick up quests/investigations/deliveries in the hub amd guarantees that monster in biome x.

@@SirJerray An open world MH would ruin the aspect of the franchise, Monster Hunter Stories is already open world and for a good reason.
Riders get to travel where ever since they can have close bonds with monsters, Hunters can't travel and hang around too long in the wilderness hence why they stay close to villages when hunting.

@@spyro115It won't because the combat is all that matters and can you get MH combat in an open world? Yup.

I don't think you can shove being open world into a game, it is more a framework that a game needs to be completely built around. Continuous zones did change Monster Hunter heavily, but that is much more minor then what open world would entail. They could try this, but if they did I think it would be on a Monster Hunter game that starts development at least a month after Dragons Dogma 2 is released.
But what would this really add? From my perspective, pretty much all it would do is let you walk from one village to another. I am not against your argument for more dynamic events though, I would be interested in hearing some examples and how it would benefit the formula.
I do agree with other commenters, Capcom shouldn't want to compete with itself and making Monster Hunter too close to Dragons Dogma would be a bad idea. I also agree with the fact that Monster Hunter stories are also good open World Monster Hunter, so making the main series open world would be competing with oneself on two fronts.
I also like the contract work of Monster Hunter and this has proven to be a formula that works for people, it was a huge point of appeal for Armored Core 6, and the timed quests made Monster Hunter a great transit game. This doesn't seem reasonably doable in an open world game.
Personally I would much rather we have a spinoff game that restores segmented hunting grounds, it can be used in so many ways and makes hunting grounds feel much larger then what the continuous hunting grounds. This way Capcom makes something for people used to the quality of life of the new games but want to experience the old games and people who preferred the old games in some ways get something new. Plus people who play all the games will still try it, but the profit margin will be higher and still more affordable to buyers, as the budget would be a tonne lower then making a Monster Hunter game with continuous hunting grounds. This is because the number of animations would be lower, fewer background objects would need to be created, programming would be simpler as would bug testing and as a Capcom could basically test more experimental monsters as the losses on each monster is lower, but if it does well it can be finished up for a game without segmented hunting grounds.
This would be a good opportunity to get rid of restocking and the monsters super move dynamic that has out of necessity spawned from it, though not permanently, more so to test if restocking actually makes the games more accessible, I feel it that it does the opposite.

i can certainly see world getting a sequel that has full open world, it doesnt feel quite right with other mh titles like rise which feels more arcady, but world already had this magnificent feel to it regarding nature, the wildlife and just the general atmosphere, if they find a way to take world and take that to another level than i'm sure that monster hunter could grow bigger and better than ever before

The only Monster Hunter games that is already open world is Monster Hunter Stories 1 and 2 since you're playing as Riders with no limitations when it comes to travelling.
The main Monster Hunter games can't be so free-like cause if you're playing as a Hunter, they're meant to be restricted to the village they're living in and can't stay out long given that the environment they live in is filled with giant deadly monsters, hence where every quest they do has a time limit for how long they can do them for. Monster Hunter World and Rise is already open-world and is MH-esque given how big the different areas are when hunting monsters with no loading times to get from one location to the next.

For me it's quite likely that MH6 will be open world regardless of how people feel about it. It is a very good business choice and all ARPG's eventually go open world like soulsborne.
And of course many people won't want to admit this but there's an abundance of ways to make it work.

I’m also ok with them not announcing MH6, I’ve been waiting for DD2 for over a decade, we’ve gotten a MH almost every year.

Would commit war crimes for down time between hunts; farming etc, but especially traveling to other settlements/towns on land sea air vehicles and sometimes protect said vehicles mid journey. We really need those "activities" after the constant grind that is RiseBreak

didnt wild hearts try this and fail...

Hmm. No. And tbh. Open world aspect of wild hearts with setting up devices was pretty fun. Game just wasn't optionalized at all and with heavily Asian setting caught no traction without pre-existing fame like mh

Wild Hearts failed because of EA specifically. It was developed by Koei Tecmo's Omega Force division and they had a strong concept people enjoyed when they showcased it initially but because they didn't want to monetize the game (unlike EA) they had very little support on the coming months after the release of the game. EA literally ruined Wild Hearts, if Koei Tecmo found a better publisher it likely would have performed better.

I would like it for Monster Hunter to NEVER adopt the Open World. I like having separate small maps that can be filled with life or be open for us to freely fight and traverse for hunts. Also open world makes Dragons Dogma and Monster Hunter more similar which is unneeded as people could play whichever fits them better or just play both. Plus it would be harder for villages and the guild to keep track of hunters if they just were let loose and roamed wild. If the game was setup as a lone hunter who was stranded on an island sure that helps but still I'd want the maps we have now in 5th gen.

    • @ChronoPinoyX
      @ChronoPinoyX  7 місяців тому

That's understandable. Though the only aspect that would make MH similar to DD would be the open world map, much of MH is drastically different to DD in terms of core gameplay mechanics, plus we wouldn't have any of the narrative stuff DD is known for. As for your preference of segmented map over a full Open World map, I can understand your perspective, it can also be equally as good to have a locale segmented from each other to make the hunt feel more personal. The whole keeping track of Hunters thing wouldn't be an issue however, the narrative behind MH already has the Hunter's Guild constantly tracking hunters out in the wild, that goes double for people in the New World as we can see NPC hunters constantly leave and return so tracking hunters on their missions wouldn't be affected in any way shape or form

I only partly agree with this,Open World just doesn't fit monster hunter,it can become quite complicated to work
But yeah, they can learn from DD2's followers and some monster mechanics
