    I wonder if cold blue coating for firearms would be better than a sharpie. It comes in a paint pen applicator. It looks like the coating on the new hook.

    When I resharpen my jig heads I poke them in a small block of trap wax that I keep in my tackle box for zippers. It works about as well as the sharpie but I always rinse my equipment before I put them up.. Great video 👍🤠🎣🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟

    You should try electroplating, it's really simple and effective. I don't even need to sharpen hooks, I just erode them a little and then plate them afterwards - and they are really needle-sharp and corrosion resistant.

      I’ve never even heard of doing that. I’ll check into it, thanks for the suggestion!

    Off subject, you guys did a podcast three years ago and you were speaking about using superglue for soft plastics in order to hold them on the hook.
    One alternative would be UV glue, we use it in fly tying to make eyes because it dries semi odorless and it is easy to use. You can use a UV light / flashlight or if in the sun (SOUTHEAST COAST) you just put it on and hold it up in the sun.

    My method is to rinse everything off with rain water. I use a spray bottle and a rag. Distilled water and rain water remove the salts better than regular water. then I let every thing dry before putting it away. This works great for hooks, lures, reels, and even old rods that have chrome steel guides.

    Good Info... What is the Chemical in a Sharpie that inhibits rust? That would be GREAT INFORMATION.

    • @shallowwaterguy4755
      @shallowwaterguy4755 2 місяці тому

      I don’t think it’s a specific chemical rather a paint that seals the metal from the air not allowing it to rust. I think anything that would seal it would do the same thing, the trick is to find something that seals but is not so thick it dulls the hook just by being on there.
      Appreciate you watching and thanks for the feedback!

    Thanks for sharing this. I literally just finished doing a deep soak of all of my lures to clean them and start changing out their hooks.
    I may try paint pen instead. I would have to apply it After Rinse at the end of the day though.

    What about using a spray, like CRC anticorrosion or something similar? I always spray my pedal drive with it after rinsing with fresh water and it seems to help the metal that's exposed to the saltwater.

    probably a little extreme but instead of the sharpie I wonder how well corrosion x or pb blaster would protect a sharpened hook? I haven't tried bc smell might deter the fish but may try it on some throwaway cheap jig heads.

    You could sharpen your hooks at home and coat with clear nail polish or some kind of paint. Or use a little veggie oil. Maybe fish oil would work. Your wife won't mind at all if you sharpen hooks in the living room and lube with menhaden oil, in the living room. 😂

    • @shallowwaterguy4755
      @shallowwaterguy4755 2 місяці тому +1

      Funny! I concern would be that the nail polish would keep the hook from penetrating because of how thick it is. It would seem to “dull” the hook in that regard.
      Thanks for watching!

    Rinse with fresh water, let dry and store in tackle box with some desiccant packs.

    • @shallowwaterguy4755

      The fresh water is probably the best route but the exposed steel is so prone to rusting. Once it starts, it will spread through the box.

    Sharpening a chemically sharpened hook does more harm than good

    • @shallowwaterguy4755
      @shallowwaterguy4755 2 місяці тому +1

      I agree that you will not get the hook as sharp as it was from the factory, and that’s why I didn’t sharpen them in the past, but it does seem wasteful to throw them away if you can get them good enough with a sharpener.
