Ray Park was such a fucking unbelievable BEAST. His rehearsal footage is almost more powerful than the final footage in the film. The man is a FREAK!!!!
I think George Lucas did an awesome job with the prequel trilogy; he added a lot of depth to a series that lacked it. What did people expect? He did well to take the series back from totalitarianism to a working democracy, with believable issues. Oh, and the prequel fight scenes are amazing.
I just realized: this isn't teaching actors to swordfight. This is a very carefully choreographed ballet. You're deciding how someone holds a sabre, because it makes the dance look more elegant. It's about having something that will look good from the point of view of a camera - it's not just fighting. And say what you want about the other two prequels, but he knew what he was doing when he created them as nobel holy warriors. It's what makes the Mandalorian so compelling.
I always looked at Lightsaber combat as a very intense deadly dance. There is clearly a rhythm in the movements. It’s almost like ballet. The original trilogy may have had good writing and character interaction, but you have to admit that the duels were pretty clunky and stiff. I’m not just talking about Ben and Vader either. They get better as they go on, but when my cousins and I were kids we wanted to imitate the prequel combat because of how cool it looked. I even watch videos of people host actual duels on UA-cam

The sword play the used is interesting. I practice Western martial arts, primarily European longsword. I believe the original trilogy used someone well versed in that. European longsword relies on the sword guard for much of its use so using a lightsaber, with no guard and very many ways to get around an opponents blocks and parries would be an interesting way of fighting for sure

Maul went down the reactor shaft and landed in water. He was then dumped into a container which was taken to Lotho Minor, where he escaped. Maul was able to use the Force to get a cybernetic apparatus to replace his lost lower body etc. Maul also has 2 bros which Disney will most likely use in the 4th and 5th trilogies!

Spiritual and intellectual. It makes sense to me why they makes such impractical moves now. Would have been great if they had made this a bit more clear in the movies, and used a more sinister version of the style for the Sith. Would have made so much more sense.
I'd say Sith and Jedi use the same tools, ergo the same advanced/intellectual fighting techniques. Maybe what matters more is what use they make of them ^^ When you see Palpatine, you see someone intellectual, and Maul seems very "spiritual", in a fanatic way

I hate to say this but the old trilogy fighting was with no means "poetry". That's bullocks blind haters of the Prequels make up but nothing that has any true backround. Even back in the old times the swordfights in those movies were considered to be "cool but somewhat ridiculous". Actually the swordfights in the newer movies have a lot more poetry in them since they show us the nature of each fighter. That's something even old-trilogy-only guys have to admit.
Interesting how he said Vader wasn't the greatest fighter because he's half mechanical. Then we have all this extra Vader stuff making him out to be super formidable.

Too bad that when it got to Episode Two, full of Jedi extras and stuff, the Jedi swordfighting lost all of its "poetry". Well, even Episode One doesn't have all the beauty of Empire, but it's better there than in all the other films of the new trilogy. And man, Ray Park is GOOD. They should've made Maul escape to fight again in another episode.

I can see this argument for ANH and ROTJ, but ESB's choreography was top-notch. Not better than the Prequels, per-say, but still incredible.

Choreography is far less important than the externalization of the characters in the fight.
