  • Today we're presenting Erick Castro's very simple reconstruction of a classic Rum Runner Cocktail.
    The Rum Runner emerged around the same time as the original Tiki movement, it was first published in Famous New Orleans Drinks And How To Mix Them by Stanley Clisby Arthur in 1937. This version is a simple reconstruction from Erick Castro and it is an amazingly simple drink to execute. In these times where ingredients can be scarce this is a drink you can cobble together with minimal footwork. Also I think we all need to feel a little positive vacation vibes right now since times are a bit dark and this can help in our quest to get away so to speak. So enjoy the drink and I'll see you guys on another time!

    So i was one of the germans who got to you about this being a Weizen Glass. It just happens i am also a Brewer and beer sommelier. Let me tell you why this is a weizen Glass: Your receptors for bitterness sit far back on your tongue and in your throat(which is why you have to swallow beer to actually taste it unlike wine where some people prefer to spit). Now a hefeweizen is a beer that doesnt have a lot of hops and therefore bitterness, so a tall slim glass is chosen because the flow speed when drinking is higher and the beer hits the back of your tongue first, which accounts for the lack of bitterness in the beer and balances the whole experience. Also hefeweizen is a yeast forward beer so you want to have your nose in the glass to smell the beautiful banana-ey clove-y esters so it opens a bit at the top. If they sell it as a pilsener glass , thats just fine, i bet you can drink a pilsener from it just as good, but i can tell you just from the looks it would be a perfect glass for a hefeweizen👍👍👍 i hope you enjoy my little excursion to choosing glass types for different beer styles

    • @theblobfish9614
      @theblobfish9614 4 роки тому

      Also a classic pilsener glass would be tall and slim, but way more fragile with a stem, because it is a light style of beer the appearance of the glass should match that but again, thats all theory, drink the way you like and enjoy!

    Only have Angostura bitters in right now and no chance of getting any others with the current situation, how badly would this drink go if I just used them instead?

    I just made a Rum Runner yesterday for the first time! I really liked it, but it was very banana forward, which isn't bad per se, but the next time I make it I'm going to half the banana liqueur because I wanted the other flavors to come through. Which brings me to; don't most Rum Runner recipes have at least blackberry and banana liqueurs? And I have to say I'm not fond of the dehydrated citrus wheels. I think they look ugly and you cant really eat it.

      Sharp white Cuban Style rum such as Bacardi White (a lot of people talk trash but it’s actually decent) or if you can get it Havana Club

    Ahhh where do you guys get all these different bitters??? Every time I see a recipe its a new type of bitter and its really bottlenecking (no pun intended) the number of cocktail recipes I can make. All I can find at local locations are orange bitters and this stuff called "alpenbitter".

      where are you based? You can get a lot of the bitters on Amazon. You can also try BevMo if there is any in your area or try Drizzly.com if they are in your area.

      As Leandro explains the requirements aren't strict, use whatever aged Jamaican rum you like, or really any good dark rum. It'll be different, but very subtlly. I don't have any specific recommendations, but Appleton Estate appears to be a staple.
