In the mid-1980's Marc Bolan's mum and dad lived in an humble 'shared ownership' house in Hobart Crescent Milton Keynes. I was a neighbour and 'Sid'(as he introduced himself, and sadly now departed) would come and chat if I was outside working in the garden. My wife had a blue Mini car and Sid came over and mentioned that they were unsafe and that his son had died in one. Up until that time I had no idea who he or his son was......... until he mentioned that his son was THE Marc Bolan.
Marc's dad told me that he ('Sid') used to work for Lesney die-casting co (makers of 'Matchbox' toy cars) and had retired from London to live at Willen Park. Sid was a gentleman, ginger haired unlike his son. Marc looked very much like his mum, same dark hair. Occasionally, Marc's son was brought to see his grandparents in Willen park (a beautiful green Bentley would be parked outside 'Sid's house). Marc's kid was looked after / schooled overseas in L.A. and was brought to see his grandparents when visiting the UK.

Wow, that's terrible. While the current music industry might be more "fair" to an artist's compensation, they're often displaced quite quickly - replaced with other "manufactured" musicians...or vocalists with bands behind them, like many American Idol-type of winners. Few full album sales, just downloaded singles off iTunes and such. Remember the days of album cover art being displayed prominently? Not much to be seen there anymore. *And now the actual voice and instrumental experience is secondary to appearance, dance ability, and Twitter/social media presence.* UGH! The whole thing is kind of sad, really.

Amazing.....at the time though it was somewhat credible his millions got soaked up in Monaco on expensive rent hotel suites with all the lavish service , not to mention the drugs etc...
Since Marc wrote all his own songs, and royalties being (in his case) a never ending huge money maker, plus the sales of his back catalogue *after* his death , certainly are worth millions ; which is ridiculous in the extreme, that *_those_* are still lost.....____His estate should hire some good quality detective lawyers with a "no cure no pay" deal....There would be enough willing to give it a go....Kenny Jones from the "Small Faces" managed to do it...

Who got his millions? From what I read, during the aftermath of the accident, it was the UK government who got a huge percentage in order to pay all sorts of back taxes, estate taxes, and taxes on everything he owned. Then his wife, not Gloria, his legal wife, got a smaller bit of it, and she had to pay taxes on that money. The managers, record company execs and assorted lawyers also got more than some would realize by shady billing practices. After that, a group of people who were appointed or self appointed as trustees received or grabbed huge amounts of current and future profits. They were later investigated for supposed shady investments in art.(were is that art hanging btw?) Again very, very weird. Bolan had put his millions in an off shore bank account of some sort on the advice of his accountants, mainly to avoid insanely huge UK taxes. That money has never really been anything but a mystery because no one really knows just who has their fingers on it. His only known biological son never got anything of.substance until he sued and the trustees settled with him for a relatively small contractual amount. Don't know how much Bolans music makes these days, probably untold millions. So who is getting it? There's a few beneficiaries and public foundations like hospitals and schools but they are probably just a drop in the bucket and only to look good and shut up inquiring minds. Drive around LA or posh parts of London and wonder where some people get their millions, and you're probably looking at Marc Bolan's money right in front of you.

    • @FrostedSeagull

How right you are Kate. Twenty years ago I read a bizarre article about Marc Bolan in one of Australia's fairly reputable newspapers - The Sydney Morning Herald. The article outright stated that Marc Bolan was a front for a bunch of very clever record executives and marketing companies. They created "Marc Bolan" and his glam boy image, Upon his death they grabbed his millions as I doubt Bolan had the sense to even hire a lawyer to protect his music and subsequent monies generated from his "efforts."
That is why after he passed in 1977 his "millions disappeared." They were NEVER his. Music has never been kind to artists and Marc Bolan does not strike me as a Peter Grant OR Mick Jagger. Bolan's career was over by '77as he only was "relevant" in the U.K. as glam rock was out. apart from KISS who were a hard rock/heavy metal band.
The punks by '77 hated Elton John, The Rolling Stones and in particular Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. The latter two bands were THE bands as they sold millions of records as well drawing millions of fans to their live concerts.

@@FrostedSeagull Bolan's music is still bringing in millions. He was a huge star overseas, though not really in America. Kind of like Pete Burns; Pete Burn's had a catalog of hits that should have kept him rich beyond belief; but he didn't keep his eye on the pound and sold away music rights for very small sums. And he wasn't as big a star as Bolan. They finally settled with Marc's son Roland for 11 million American dollars to be paid over a 20 yr. period; a fuckin' ripoff considering Marc Bolan's music royalties will likely net over 22 million pounds this year alone.

As I recall it was a concrete & metal divider they hit, not a tree.
    Also I have known folks-myself included-who drove
their car with at least one wheel on low pressure
and they had no trouble whatsoever managing the car.
I have also known at least three folks whose tyre came
off altogether when they were driving and they still managed
to safely guide the car to the side of the road. The fact is
that Jones was driving recklessly that night-was very drunk
and speeding-and it resulted in Marc's death. She survived with
only a busted jaw because she was behind the wheel so it braced
her upon impact. It's true that enough of the facts in the police
report reached the ears of Marc's fans in the UK that Jones started
getting death threats not long after the accident. That's the reason
she got her bottom back to the USA pronto.

Most artists have been squandered by their shifty managers: Nugent, Petty, Aerosmith, etc. When artists starts to realize this fact, they myseriously end up dead. On the other side, Hendrix's band mates and their families still trying to get his money, decades after his he died. The whole rock and roll star, on the scale of these artists, was so new and big, that many of them were focused on the music, and did not get finances in order; they thought they would live to at least 30 I guess, and they could work on the boring financial business side of their work.

By "exotic" I meant Marc's relationship was very different to his with June's. It was at the time we all experimented outside our class, race, nationality and age.

The fact the mini was a last minute substitute makes that possibly more remote. They were death traps in high impact scenarios and many must have been killed in them over the years?

When albums are made, the record company gives an advance to the artist, which can be a huge sum. Depending on the contract, either the royalties from sales are used to repay the advance so if the sales aren't high enough to meet a big one, the artist can end up making nothing. Worse still, some contracts mean the artist has to repay the difference, so even an apparently big seller can leave an artist in debt. I have no surprise at the figures quoted here.

I agree, it is very strange, what's even more strange is that apparently, Gloria Jones was supposed to appear in court on charges of being unfit to drive but she never actually came back to face the charges and Marc's death went down on the record as "accidental", make of that what you will.

He collected his mother went to the house and then went to the morgue to identify body then he went back to Marcs house one and half hours later to discover it had been ransacked with no forced entry. Bit dodgy don't you think? And yet he claims elsewhere he got nothing but in this clip he shows off a pair of shoes a hat and a guitar and if I remember a fan gave them to him. Yeah right. First off he can't stick to a story and why would you go to his house? You would go straight to the morgue.

I think Marc was too clever, too shrewd by half with his finances.
He would have known where every penny went.
He was just as unscrupulous as all the other sharks in the industry.
He paid no tax between 1970 and 1977. Astonishing and very risky.
That he thought he could get away with it was very foolish.
In the end, he would have ended up in court and facing jail time.
That would have forced him to cough up but if he could not access those
far away funds, then they would have taken all other assets including
    his home and guitars, etc.
