@@rafaelmatos5851 The eyes really say it all. Pearl and Rose were extremely synchronised together, we see how the more stable and intimate the fusion is, the more humanoid it looks. The extra limbs and stuff represent the personality aspects that pull into different directions and make the fusion less stable. Pearl and Rose are almost perfect combined, but their eyes see and communicate completely opposite things.
The “Human beings.” Said by Steven at the end of the episode hurts my heart. He’s both human and gem but clearly he sees himself as neither human nor gem but something between that no one can understand or help him with
That last line always haunted me while the show was still airing, yeah. Steven's struggle reconciling his identity a gem is interesting sure, but Steven's struggle to fully accept his humanity as the show went on was always more interesting to me
You know it's bad when she would rather face more tropophobia than that large hand monster. Imagine a functional Frankenstein but it is covered in the wrong body parts. Worse, the person it used to be is still in there.
I love this cause when it aired it was part of the second Stevenbomb. Many people complained about the Ronaldo episode (and kept complaining to the show ended) but to me? It was the perfect breather FOR THE ABSOLUTE INSANITY WE WOULD GET AFTER

One thing people don't realize about the flashback episodes is Greg is a fully grown adult. He's the same height as when he's older. That means Amethyst is the same size, too. The size just looks weird because he's got like 20 pounds of hair, Steven's house isn't built yet so they're in a much larger open space, and things are scaled to make Rose Quartz fit in frame. She's 8 feet tall. She's a GIANT. Amethyst is at least a couple hundred years old at this point. Probably more like 1000 or more. She's not a child. She's a LOT more child-like in personality. It's never shown directly, but I always assumed she matured a lot in learning to take care of Steven and after she lost Rose.

I think Garnet saying "it worked" is like... To Garnet, fusion is far more than just mushing your bodies together. She said herself in her song that she's the conversation between Ruby and Sapphire. You could say that from her perspective, Greg and Rose _were_ one at the end there.
Smoky Quartz is actually the fusion between Connie and Greg when they fuse to save Steven. Steven passed on the ability to fuse to Connie, and then she passes it on to Greg when they make Smoky Quartz
Eh, whether or not she gained the ability from Steven or not is up for debate. I mean, it is established that, with gems being on Earth for SO LONG, that Steven isn't the only gem-human fusion, and there are several hints of Connie being the long descendant of a Human-Jasper fusion! Sure, it's not CONFIRMED, but I'm personally convinced this is the truth. The hints were all there!
I always wanted Connie to be able to fuse with other gems because I thought it would be funny if she fused with Lapis and the result was an overly attached girlfriend.
A war veteran seeing their former comrade’s bodies mashed together in a Frankenstein-esque amalgamation of flesh and turned feral from the unbearableness of its own existence. Not so much attacking as it is desperately lashing out in an attempt to escape from its own twisted body.
The mental distress is why we see the two of them talking from the outside. Their fusion and mental state was so unstable that they were no longer acting or thinking as one in that moment. When steven gets their attention, their minds finally resynchronize.
This is what makes Garnet so well written. She's the best version of Ruby AND Sapphire, but that synergy is so fragile. Whenever she encounters a revelation that rocks her to her core, it's important to remember that she has TWO cores. Two different sides to her that will likely have wildly different reactions, and that threatens her stability. It keeps her from being too perfect as a character, which is excellent writing.
18:13 so SO happy you watched the uncensored version! In the uk, that scene where rose is holding pearl like that is completely cut and replaced with an image of Greg. It really helps sell what their relationship was like and it's so easy for a reactor to completely miss it because it's not immediately marked as the censored version.
I had no idea the UK was all anti-gay cartoons too, I thought only the really restrictive countries, like Saudi Arabia, had the gay censored out. Though if we didn't have backwards gay hate, then we wouldn't get Rebecca Sugar fighting back with that one Ruby and sapphire episode (avoiding spoilers), and that level of "censor the gay now, suckers!" almost makes the anti-gay antagonistic bs worth it
Honestly thank god for shows like that, they make a great bridge from children's cartoons, to teen and young adult content. Otherwise kids would have to jump from baby shows, directly into Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. Steven Universe is that perfect show where kids can watch it, and all the mature stuff goes over their head, and then teens and adults can watch it, and appreciate the real plot

When gems fuse, they CAN take on additional limbs, eyes, even mouths. The more in synch they are as partners, the less they end up with arms and eyes. So garnet is incredibly in sync. She has 3 eyes, and humanly proportional In contrast, malachite, the fusion of jasper and lapis is monstrous, arms, legs, eyes And the more gems you add the harder it is to keep down on limbs. Every garnet fusion has 2 arms, and alexandrite has 2 mouths

We Need to Talk is one of the most dense episodes of the series. There’s so many layers to everyone. I recommend coming back to it every now and then as revelations and character interactions change the meaning of different lines and actions. That’s all I can say without spoilers.
Imagine the forced fusion monster, without the chromatic colors. But rather, flesh tones. A horrible Frankenstein amalgamation of limbs and torsos, bound together in a hasty slapdash job, driven insane and feral from how unbearable it’s own existence is. It’s attacks more akin to something desperately flailing to escape from its own twisted body.
Canonically (it's not explained in the series but by Rebecca Sugar themselves in an interview) Gems don't have organs but the shapeshift them in their form, just like Amethyst do to eat, so to the question of "How Steven was born" the answer is just that Rose shapeshifted the right organs.
Keeping it Together shows how fusion is a metaphor for relationships of any kind very well because just like what Garnet said about fusion when people have a really good strong relationship it brings out the best in them and makes them better in general

The fusions form are just how stable they are, like garnet are stable , and malichite don't. The fusions can be made whith many objectives, like love, friendship, hate, it just need to the two gems be sincronized ;)
Peridot has the most adorable voice. after you're done watching this series, look up interviews with the actor. She was a dancer and cheerleader who played bit parts all over and I think this was her first voice role
its always fun to imagine too, having sapphire be the one whos angry and ruby the one whos gentle within garnets voices. because sapphire although soft spoken, has future visions and has a good grip on outcome and predictions. i feel like she has rage bottled up whereas ruby is the sweet brute that tries to maintain equilibrium
A neat detail is that a drum kit isn't just perfect for Amethyst; her musical theme in the show is percussion; similarly Garnet's is synth bass (which she's arguably playing in the music video as well), and Pearl has piano. And the fusions generally get the instruments of their components. The things this show does with its music are actually really neat on a lot of levels. Smoky Quartz is one of my favourite fusions. She's actually Pearl and Jasper, to create a dark counterpart to the Pearl and Rose fusion. It's surprisingly not as messed up as it sounds in context, and makes a great climax to a character arc.
Keeping It Together: "The ones we couldn't find...they've been here the whole time." Apparently after the war Rose Quartz & co. tried to find out what happened to those Crystal Gems unfortunate to be captured alive or poofed and their gemstones recovered by Homeworld forces. This emphasizes what Rose told Pearl at the very beginning of the rebellion: "If we lose, we'll be killed; and if we win we can never go home." We Need To Talk: Ironically, had Pearl not let her jealousy get the better of her to try to flex on Greg, Rose and Greg might have soon drifted apart. Greg was plainly dismayed by Rose's patronizing lyrics, and had he not stepped up his game and challenged her to regard him as an equal partner deserving respect Rose would have looked at Greg as just another "playmate" for empty fun. There's been debate back and forth on how much of the future Garnet saw when she gave her advice to Greg. Pearl's "I think he's HER favorite, too" would seem to show that what Rose and Greg were doing was unprecedented among the unknown numbers of human "playmates" Rose had over the millennia. The lights going wonky was a callback to earlier incidents (Story For Steven, Maximum Capacity) that show that when Rose Quartz or Steven get emotionally excited/shocked, electronics malfunction.

When we first meet Sapphire, she pulls Steven through the ship corridors at great speed, so Garnet also has physical prowess from her and from general superhuman gem abilities, so there's also brawn from Sapphire. And we haven't seen much of Ruby's intellect, but she's got plenty of fighting and strategy building experience of thousands of years of combat either separate or fused.
And don't forget Sapphire can kinda float, so that probably helps boost Garnet's strength (less so on the punching, more so on the jumping. Like if she uses as much leg force to launch a huge woman, but then that huge woman weighs as much as a balloon, the she'll launch herself way further)
"Orange Magic Orchestra" is a reference to "Yellow Magic Orchestra", a late 70s Japanese electronic music band that was very innovative and influential in early electronic music. I highly recommend them.
fun fact: the shot of garnet conversing as ruby and sapphire, most people think the gentler voice being sapphire and more aggressive one being ruby, but when you read into what they say the softer one is sapphire, being angry about not being able to see ahead in the future to have seen this coming
It is so fun being able to re-experience Steven Universe as you react to it. (I really have enjoyed Elijah occasionally serving as a stand-in for the audience that knows the things you don't yet.) And those fusion experiments are some proper nightmare fuel. Serious Undertale Amalgomate vibes. They'll be even worse when an army of them surround the Temple like a Zombie Hoard.

I don’t know if anyone’s mentioned this, but I remember a theory about Garnet’s sunglasses. If more of her Ruby side is talking, her sunglasses are more red, and if more of her Sapphire side is talking, her sunglasses are more blue. If they’re both talking equally, the sunglasses are split red and blue.
Several times ive gotten the "we need to talk" and it turned out the person wanting to talk just wanted my opinion on something. So non bad "we need to talks" exist, but i still panic every time
Garnet:"Amethyst..give us some PRIVACY!"(Hurls treat, Amethyst goes running) XD I do like that Garnet fully understands Greg, though she is more stoic than the others. Pearl follows Roses example and reasons for defending humanity, but I feel like she doesn't truly respect humans at this moment in time(remember how when Greg came over the fence, she wanted him to be thrown back over). Amethyst thinks Greg is fun, but Garnet can understand his feelings of love for Rose and wanting to express it, so though she knows they won't be able to fuse, she gives him the way to open up to Rose and in doing so, brings them closer together.
The following is not a spoiler, as its been explained at this point, and ties into fusion and how Steven exists and the gem shards. The general consensus/way to think about it is the Gems are like CPUs, the gem its self is the hardware, which also has a baked in operating system as the base software (default settings, including powers and base personality), their memories, added weapons, and the light body are all software. When two gems fuse normally they don't combine the hardware physically (the gems stay separate on the body of the fusion, although the color might change), while the software boosts and enhances the best qualities of each other's programs to create a stronger form. Hence Jasper's comments about it being used to make weak gems stronger, how Homeworld views fusion. When the gem is cracked or broken this is like breaking a CPU, damaging the connections, causing glitches (see Amethyst when her gem cracked and she was glitching), so the shards are like a smashed up CPU, the gem shards being stuck together is like Peridot and the experiments are like someone taking pieces of different CPUs and soldering them together to try and make a functional computer. different pieces making different body part projections and so on. Steven is basically thought of as Rose Quartz deleted her memory, and fused her hardware with human biology (Greg's DNA), and linked the Gem's OS to the human nervous system that developed around it, thus Steven's brain is directly connected to the gem so he is both new hardware and new software, so Steven isn't too different from the Gem fusion experiments. Just Steven has his mother's OS, and thus her powers and such are in his biology as well, so he's not just a kid with a gem stuck in his belly, more like Godzilla with two brains (Godzilla has a brain in his head and a second brain at the base of the tail, that function as one mind) And I stop there as this is all related to what has been revealed thus far taken through a computer lens.
Let out a loud gasp the moment I remembered what the first episode was about. The flashback one was also amazing, but Keeping It Together is legit one of the most terrifying moments in all of SU, and I love it for that
Amethyst saying that's her favorite fusion is one of my favorite moments it reminds me of when people would talk about their favorite transformation of goku and they would show ss2 or ss4 and i would show goku in a suit next to chichi in a wedding dress and say that's my favorite one
"It worked." Fusion is about sharing your light and trusting the other partner with that light. It's about communication, trust, love, and opening yourself up to another. And even if they didn't "fuse" in the way gems can, they certainly "fused" with the same measures between themselves.
Okay, since you're aware of the existence of Smoky Quartz, I can officially say: I. Cannot. WAIT! For you to meet Smoky, officially. I know that's gonna' be a while, but I'm already eagerly looking forward to it. I'm convinced you're going to *adore* that particular fusion.
Keeping it together is horrific enough for me so I can only imagine how much worse it was for Garnet. While they really never go further into it I always figured Rose was Poly/Pan and Pearl full-well knowing that just barely tolerated her getting the "70 year itch" so-to-speak knowing she'd always get her back once her current pet human passed. But Greg was different.
I like to think Garnet used her future vision, so when she said "Their fusion worked" she was referring to Steven being their fusion. Though, it could also just be the relationship.
Garnet plays a keytar: a fusion instrument. I love that we get back-to-back episodes that give so much insight into fusion! Also, fusions always have extra body parts, but that is different in each fusion. Some, like Opal, have extra arms. Garnet and Rainbow Quartz have extra eyes. Stevonnie is intersex. Alexandrite has extra arms and an extra mouth. It depends on the gems that fuse and how many gems there are in a fusion.
Can't wait for her to find out that Stephen is a fusion and doesn't know it, Rose had twins. And then when she finds out what Pearl is a fusion of? Oh man....
I love that during Rose and Pearl's dance they heavily imply it's like kissing to them here? Rose is the one that starts with the mic but after Rainbow Quartz unfuses, Pearl holds it. Like passing gum during a kiss
I only wish We Need to Talk wasn't the only time we got to hear Susan Egan sing in this series. Her voice never fails to enchant me, and I have felt that way ever since I first heard her voice Meg from Disney's Hercules. She's also incredibly sweet, by the way. 🥰

They aren't actually any smaller, but the camera positioning changes to put Greg at about Steven's size relative to the screen, which makes everyone else seem smaller, too. It's how they illustrate the change in perspective.
10:24 Imagine your group of close-knit BEST FRIENDS, more like family in battle, all went missing, and then a long, long time later after not being able to find them, you discovered that they're, in a way, dead. Their bodies are forced together into a Frankenstein of what they once were, and with each piece of their physical bodies, comes a scarred fragment of their mind. Their sanity and their bodies are no longer whole so they're not the people you used to know. They're "alive," but in excruciating pain because their very being defies the laws of nature, knowing only slivers of who they used to be and yearning desperately for their past selves, but utterly unable to regain their full mental and bodily autonomy. All they know is that they're in pain and angry, and want to attack/defend themselves from whoever is in front of them, including you. They have nothing but all the time in the world to wander aimlessly seeking to be whole but never finding themselves. They do this until the end of time or until someone puts them out of their misery, be it temporary (poofing/bubbling) or... Permanent. That's what happened to these poor Gem shards.
Yeah, it's why I tend to get a bit cranky when people equate shattering gems to "killing" them. It's really not equivalent. Shattering a gem is more like consigning her to an eternity of torment than it is like killing her.
Garnet's terror reaction to the gem shard "fusions" really added to the darkness of this episode. I also have this headcannon that the shards being forced together like that causes them physical and psychological pain 😢
Keeping it together is allways hard to watch. Its metaphors are not exactly subtle with the references to forced fusion. 'fusion is a choice', 'that isn't fusion' . Even though fusion isn't always sex- its just a strong relationship of any kind, its not hard to see what they are hinting at. But I'm glad the episodes there- its very well done
One thing I love about watching reactions like this, is how people respond to seeing things the first time. It's like watching it for the first time all over again myself. Me and one of my friends still talk about how we reacted to some of the Fusions that came up over the show. It's just so fun to watch you and your reactions
I don't think the reveal of what fusion really is specifically happened yet, but I will give you a hint. There's a lot of different kinds. It can be between friends, romantic partners, family, really anyone, and is a physical manifestation of an intangible thing.
Garnet really shows how she can empathize with others. She may not be human and knows Greg can't fuse, but she uses her experience with fusing to relate how it feels in a way relatable to Greg and how he needs his own way with connecting with Rose.
One thing you come to accept from fusion dances, is that Pearl is like... The HORNIEST fusion dancer, intimate doesn't even begin to describe her body language when she's fusing, lol.
We Need to Talk is such a fascinating episode. So much juicy characterization! (I can't wait for the episode where Steven and Sapphire get sucked into that music video!)
Hardly a novel observation here, but I'm so impressed by the emotional intelligence at the heart of this show, and in the specific context of these episodes, the way it uses the concept of fusion as a metaphor to talk about relationships and intimacy - of all kinds - without getting didactic or explicit. We have Garnet talking to Greg about the need for openness and trust; we have Pearl and Amethyst bickering and struggling to stay fused outside an immediate crisis; we have Homeworld completely failing to understand fusion as anything but a utilitarian power move; we have the contrast between Garnet's solid, stable form built on love and mutual respect against the misshapen monster created from Jasper & Lapis' toxic and domineering relationship. But especially, I can't think of many kid-friendly shows that address the topic of consent at all, and none that do so as intelligently as this one - here and elsewhere. In Stevonnie's first fusion, we get the two checking in with each other, and Steven explicitly saying "We can stop." (I think it's really important that it would be Steven to say that.) Garnet counsels them to make sure they're a good experience together. And here, Garnet is unequivocal - fusion *must* be a choice, and being forced into intimacy is wrong, full stop. It's *so good* at teaching by example and giving a framework to talk about things.
Garnet invented gem fusion and joined the "Crystal Gems" rebellion against Homeworld - who considered it a forbidden way for weak Gems to get more powerful. She taught the other rebels under Rose about fusion. Then the Crystal Gems...started experimenting around mix and matching fusions between each of them - er..."exploring" all sorts of new relationships. This unlocked new powers and abilities and turned the tide of the war. What had been a guerilla war of rebels using hit and run attacks as a hunted nuisance turned into the rebels openly taking and holding territory. That's when Homeworld took the gloves off...
I just listened to What Can I Do For You a couple days ago in the car, and goddamn.....this song has even more depth when you go back and watch it after watching this series to its completion. It's kinda terrifying to realize just how much was hidden in this deceptively simple sounding song.
I lied before. _Garnet_ is the one with the villain arc. She discovers that not only is fusion relegated to a combat tactic on homeworld, but it’s forced to be. All gems are given electric chip implants. Non soldiers are completely prevented from fusing, and soldiers have to have their chips turned off by their leaders to allow it in battle. The shard fusions were already too far. This is how you push Garnet over the edge, chained to an ancor. She gets so mad, she starts shattering enemy gems by hand, and crushes them to dust to prevent them even becoming shard fusions. The other CGs are horrified by this.
Awwwww such a good couple eps. Lore and horror in one, relationship trouble in the other. I think it was another reactor who had a good point, that the gems in We Need to Talk are at their most "alien"... Rose literally says to Greg's face she likes "playing along" with the humans, and she's loved humans before him, but the idea of talking to him like a "real person" hadn't even crossed her mind! Obviously she changes for the better but man.

In 22:25 you can see greg getting scared because He never saw garnet without the glasses and that she have 3 eyes that he even says "I (eye) think i get it....."

My interpretation is that Garnet is an entirely different person created when ruby and sapphire are in harmony. Only when there is dissent do their original personality emerge and separate. There isn't ruby half or sapphire half. Just a WHOLE Garnet.

One small detail I love during Rainbow Quartz's dance is that one smile they flash at Greg. Looking at Rose's eyes, she's smiling like, "You enjoying the show, sweetie?" But looking at Pearl's eyes, she's smiling like, "You will NEVER be able to do this with her."

@@rafaelmatos5851 The eyes really say it all. Pearl and Rose were extremely synchronised together, we see how the more stable and intimate the fusion is, the more humanoid it looks. The extra limbs and stuff represent the personality aspects that pull into different directions and make the fusion less stable. Pearl and Rose are almost perfect combined, but their eyes see and communicate completely opposite things.

One thing people don't realize about the flashback episodes is Greg is a fully grown adult. He's the same height as when he's older. That means Amethyst is the same size, too. The size just looks weird because he's got like 20 pounds of hair, Steven's house isn't built yet so they're in a much larger open space, and things are scaled to make Rose Quartz fit in frame. She's 8 feet tall. She's a GIANT.
Amethyst is at least a couple hundred years old at this point. Probably more like 1000 or more. She's not a child. She's a LOT more child-like in personality. It's never shown directly, but I always assumed she matured a lot in learning to take care of Steven and after she lost Rose.

Smoky Quartz is actually the fusion between Connie and Greg when they fuse to save Steven. Steven passed on the ability to fuse to Connie, and then she passes it on to Greg when they make Smoky Quartz

I mean, it is established that, with gems being on Earth for SO LONG, that Steven isn't the only gem-human fusion, and there are several hints of Connie being the long descendant of a Human-Jasper fusion! A war veteran seeing their former comrade’s bodies mashed together in a Frankenstein-esque amalgamation of flesh and turned feral from the unbearableness of its own existence. Not so much attacking as it is desperately lashing out in an attempt to escape from its own twisted body.
The mental distress is why we see the two of them talking from the outside. Their fusion and mental state was so unstable that they were no longer acting or thinking as one in that moment. When steven gets their attention, their minds finally resynchronize.

This is what makes Garnet so well written. She's the best version of Ruby AND Sapphire, but that synergy is so fragile. Whenever she encounters a revelation that rocks her to her core, it's important to remember that she has TWO cores. Two different sides to her that will likely have wildly different reactions, and that threatens her stability. It keeps her from being too perfect as a character, which is excellent writing.

It really helps sell what their relationship was like and it's so easy for a reactor to completely miss it because it's not immediately marked as the censored version.

Yeah, when this show was still fresh, it was VERY aware of the late teens/early adult contingent of its audience.
Honestly thank god for shows like that, they make a great bridge from children's cartoons, to teen and young adult content. Otherwise kids would have to jump from baby shows, directly into Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.

We Need to Talk is one of the most dense episodes of the series. There’s so many layers to everyone. I recommend coming back to it every now and then as revelations and character interactions change the meaning of different lines and actions. That’s all I can say without spoilers.
Imagine the forced fusion monster, without the chromatic colors. But rather, flesh tones.
A horrible Frankenstein amalgamation of limbs and torsos, bound together in a hasty slapdash job, driven insane and feral from how unbearable it’s own existence is. It’s attacks more akin to something desperately flailing to escape from its own twisted body.

Canonically (it's not explained in the series but by Rebecca Sugar themselves in an interview) Gems don't have organs but the shapeshift them in their form, just like Amethyst do to eat, so to the question of "How Steven was born" the answer is just that Rose shapeshifted the right organs.
Keeping it Together shows how fusion is a metaphor for relationships of any kind very well because just like what Garnet said about fusion when people have a really good strong relationship it brings out the best in them and makes them better in general

Peridot has the most adorable voice. after you're done watching this series, look up interviews with the actor. She was a dancer and cheerleader who played bit parts all over and I think this was her first voice role
its always fun to imagine too, having sapphire be the one whos angry and ruby the one whos gentle within garnets voices. because sapphire although soft spoken, has future visions and has a good grip on outcome and predictions. i feel like she has rage bottled up whereas ruby is the sweet brute that tries to maintain equilibrium
Sex and Intimacy are a venn diagram. They overlap, but you can have one without the other.
A neat detail is that a drum kit isn't just perfect for Amethyst; her musical theme in the show is percussion; similarly Garnet's is synth bass (which she's arguably playing in the music video as well), and Pearl has piano. And the fusions generally get the instruments of their components. The things this show does with its music are actually really neat on a lot of levels.
Smoky Quartz is one of my favourite fusions. She's actually Pearl and Jasper, to create a dark counterpart to the Pearl and Rose fusion. It's surprisingly not as messed up as it sounds in context, and makes a great climax to a character arc.
Keeping It Together: "The ones we couldn't find...they've been here the whole time." Apparently after the war Rose Quartz & co. tried to find out what happened to those Crystal Gems unfortunate to be captured alive or poofed and their gemstones recovered by Homeworld forces. This emphasizes what Rose told Pearl at the very beginning of the rebellion: "If we lose, we'll be killed; and if we win we can never go home."
We Need To Talk: Ironically, had Pearl not let her jealousy get the better of her to try to flex on Greg, Rose and Greg might have soon drifted apart. Greg was plainly dismayed by Rose's patronizing lyrics, and had he not stepped up his game and challenged her to regard him as an equal partner deserving respect Rose would have looked at Greg as just another "playmate" for empty fun. There's been debate back and forth on how much of the future Garnet saw when she gave her advice to Greg. Pearl's "I think he's HER favorite, too" would seem to show that what Rose and Greg were doing was unprecedented among the unknown numbers of human "playmates" Rose had over the millennia.
The lights going wonky was a callback to earlier incidents (Story For Steven, Maximum Capacity) that show that when Rose Quartz or Steven get emotionally excited/shocked, electronics malfunction.

When we first meet Sapphire, she pulls Steven through the ship corridors at great speed, so Garnet also has physical prowess from her and from general superhuman gem abilities, so there's also brawn from Sapphire. And we haven't seen much of Ruby's intellect, but she's got plenty of fighting and strategy building experience of thousands of years of combat either separate or fused.
And don't forget Sapphire can kinda float, so that probably helps boost Garnet's strength (less so on the punching, more so on the jumping. Like if she uses as much leg force to launch a huge woman, but then that huge woman weighs as much as a balloon, the she'll launch herself way further)
It's crazy how, when Rose is on screen, everybody else looks so liddle.

Several times ive gotten the "we need to talk" and it turned out the person wanting to talk just wanted my opinion on something. So non bad "we need to talks" exist, but i still panic every time

I do like that Garnet fully understands Greg, though she is more stoic than the others. Pearl follows Roses example and reasons for defending humanity, but I feel like she doesn't truly respect humans at this moment in time(remember how when Greg came over the fence, she wanted him to be thrown back over). Amethyst thinks Greg is fun, but Garnet can understand his feelings of love for Rose and wanting to express it, so though she knows they won't be able to fuse, she gives him the way to open up to Rose and in doing so, brings them closer together.
The following is not a spoiler, as its been explained at this point, and ties into fusion and how Steven exists and the gem shards. The general consensus/way to think about it is the Gems are like CPUs, the gem its self is the hardware, which also has a baked in operating system as the base software (default settings, including powers and base personality), their memories, added weapons, and the light body are all software. When two gems fuse normally they don't combine the hardware physically (the gems stay separate on the body of the fusion, although the color might change), while the software boosts and enhances the best qualities of each other's programs to create a stronger form. Hence Jasper's comments about it being used to make weak gems stronger, how Homeworld views fusion. When the gem is cracked or broken this is like breaking a CPU, damaging the connections, causing glitches (see Amethyst when her gem cracked and she was glitching), so the shards are like a smashed up CPU, the gem shards being stuck together is like Peridot and the experiments are like someone taking pieces of different CPUs and soldering them together to try and make a functional computer. different pieces making different body part projections and so on. Steven is basically thought of as Rose Quartz deleted her memory, and fused her hardware with human biology (Greg's DNA), and linked the Gem's OS to the human nervous system that developed around it, thus Steven's brain is directly connected to the gem so he is both new hardware and new software, so Steven isn't too different from the Gem fusion experiments. Just Steven has his mother's OS, and thus her powers and such are in his biology as well, so he's not just a kid with a gem stuck in his belly, more like Godzilla with two brains (Godzilla has a brain in his head and a second brain at the base of the tail, that function as one mind) And I stop there as this is all related to what has been revealed thus far taken through a computer lens.
Let out a loud gasp the moment I remembered what the first episode was about. The flashback one was also amazing, but Keeping It Together is legit one of the most terrifying moments in all of SU, and I love it for that
Amethyst saying that's her favorite fusion is one of my favorite moments it reminds me of when people would talk about their favorite transformation of goku and they would show ss2 or ss4 and i would show goku in a suit next to chichi in a wedding dress and say that's my favorite one
"It worked." Fusion is about sharing your light and trusting the other partner with that light. It's about communication, trust, love, and opening yourself up to another. And even if they didn't "fuse" in the way gems can, they certainly "fused" with the same measures between themselves.

I love that we get back-to-back episodes that give so much insight into fusion! Also, fusions always have extra body parts, but that is different in each fusion. Some, like Opal, have extra arms. Garnet and Rainbow Quartz have extra eyes. Stevonnie is intersex. Alexandrite has extra arms and an extra mouth. It depends on the gems that fuse and how many gems there are in a fusion.
Can't wait for her to find out that Stephen is a fusion and doesn't know it, Rose had twins. And then when she finds out what Pearl is a fusion of? Oh man....

Their bodies are forced together into a Frankenstein of what they once were, and with each piece of their physical bodies, comes a scarred fragment of their mind.
Their sanity and their bodies are no longer whole so they're not the people you used to know. They're "alive," but in excruciating pain because their very being defies the laws of nature, knowing only slivers of who they used to be and yearning desperately for their past selves, but utterly unable to regain their full mental and bodily autonomy. All they know is that they're in pain and angry, and want to attack/defend themselves from whoever is in front of them, including you. They have nothing but all the time in the world to wander aimlessly seeking to be whole but never finding themselves. They do this until the end of time or until someone puts them out of their misery, be it temporary (poofing/bubbling) or... Permanent.
That's what happened to these poor Gem shards.
Yeah, it's why I tend to get a bit cranky when people equate shattering gems to "killing" them. It's really not equivalent. Shattering a gem is more like consigning her to an eternity of torment than it is like killing her.
Garnet's terror reaction to the gem shard "fusions" really added to the darkness of this episode.
I also have this headcannon that the shards being forced together like that causes them physical and psychological pain 😢
Keeping it together is allways hard to watch. Its metaphors are not exactly subtle with the references to forced fusion. 'fusion is a choice', 'that isn't fusion' . Even though fusion isn't always sex- its just a strong relationship of any kind, its not hard to see what they are hinting at.
But I'm glad the episodes there- its very well done

One thing I love about watching reactions like this, is how people respond to seeing things the first time. It's like watching it for the first time all over again myself. Me and one of my friends still talk about how we reacted to some of the Fusions that came up over the show. It's just so fun to watch you and your reactions
I don't think the reveal of what fusion really is specifically happened yet, but I will give you a hint. There's a lot of different kinds. It can be between friends, romantic partners, family, really anyone, and is a physical manifestation of an intangible thing.
Garnet really shows how she can empathize with others. She may not be human and knows Greg can't fuse, but she uses her experience with fusing to relate how it feels in a way relatable to Greg and how he needs his own way with connecting with Rose.
One thing you come to accept from fusion dances, is that Pearl is like... The HORNIEST fusion dancer, intimate doesn't even begin to describe her body language when she's fusing, lol.
We Need to Talk is such a fascinating episode. So much juicy characterization! (I can't wait for the episode where Steven and Sapphire get sucked into that music video!)
Hardly a novel observation here, but I'm so impressed by the emotional intelligence at the heart of this show, and in the specific context of these episodes, the way it uses the concept of fusion as a metaphor to talk about relationships and intimacy - of all kinds - without getting didactic or explicit.
We have Garnet talking to Greg about the need for openness and trust; we have Pearl and Amethyst bickering and struggling to stay fused outside an immediate crisis; we have Homeworld completely failing to understand fusion as anything but a utilitarian power move; we have the contrast between Garnet's solid, stable form built on love and mutual respect against the misshapen monster created from Jasper & Lapis' toxic and domineering relationship.
But especially, I can't think of many kid-friendly shows that address the topic of consent at all, and none that do so as intelligently as this one - here and elsewhere. In Stevonnie's first fusion, we get the two checking in with each other, and Steven explicitly saying "We can stop." (I think it's really important that it would be Steven to say that.) Garnet counsels them to make sure they're a good experience together. And here, Garnet is unequivocal - fusion *must* be a choice, and being forced into intimacy is wrong, full stop. It's *so good* at teaching by example and giving a framework to talk about things.
Garnet invented gem fusion and joined the "Crystal Gems" rebellion against Homeworld - who considered it a forbidden way for weak Gems to get more powerful. She taught the other rebels under Rose about fusion. Then the Crystal Gems...started experimenting around mix and matching fusions between each of them - er..."exploring" all sorts of new relationships. This unlocked new powers and abilities and turned the tide of the war. What had been a guerilla war of rebels using hit and run attacks as a hunted nuisance turned into the rebels openly taking and holding territory. That's when Homeworld took the gloves off...
I just listened to What Can I Do For You a couple days ago in the car, and goddamn.....this song has even more depth when you go back and watch it after watching this series to its completion. It's kinda terrifying to realize just how much was hidden in this deceptively simple sounding song.
Both of these two episodes are so incredible and emotionally intelligent.
Rose quartz is complicated, I dont even mean events or spoilers but you just saw how much "WTF are you doing?! Who and why?!"
I lied before. _Garnet_ is the one with the villain arc. She discovers that not only is fusion relegated to a combat tactic on homeworld, but it’s forced to be. All gems are given electric chip implants. Non soldiers are completely prevented from fusing, and soldiers have to have their chips turned off by their leaders to allow it in battle. The shard fusions were already too far. This is how you push Garnet over the edge, chained to an ancor. She gets so mad, she starts shattering enemy gems by hand, and crushes them to dust to prevent them even becoming shard fusions. The other CGs are horrified by this.
Awwwww such a good couple eps. Lore and horror in one, relationship trouble in the other. I think it was another reactor who had a good point, that the gems in We Need to Talk are at their most "alien"... Rose literally says to Greg's face she likes "playing along" with the humans, and she's loved humans before him, but the idea of talking to him like a "real person" hadn't even crossed her mind!
Obviously she changes for the better but man.
smokey quartz is actually a fusion between rose quartz and ronaldo, since he’s about smoke and mirrors and all that
All those years latter, I feel that this episode is all you need to understand Rose's character, the good AND the bad.

In 22:25 you can see greg getting scared because He never saw garnet without the glasses and that she have 3 eyes that he even says "I (eye) think i get it....."
Ahhh love your reaction because you delve so deeply into the story and comment on everything that happens !!! But have to say Steven looked little sad at the end like he was like ( I'm not... human being)
My interpretation is that Garnet is an entirely different person created when ruby and sapphire are in harmony. Only when there is dissent do their original personality emerge and separate. There isn't ruby half or sapphire half. Just a WHOLE Garnet.
