Post your time stamps below of when you think the exact moment I realised it was not going to turn out ok was... 😂🤦♀️
7:39..but it's a happy disaster
Remember there are no mistakes, just happy little accidents.
3:47 you saw the red and I think just then it hit "We're making two different images here."
4:04
3:57 seems to a good estimate of a time where you started to seem to have doubts about how things were going.
You can't fail at a Bob Ross painting.
You just have a shit ton of happy accidents.❤
A SHIT ton! 😂
And happy little trees
@@DianeJennings A SHIT TON is a Ton of SHIT, about 909kg of shit in Metric Terms!
The accident in this case may be the birth of New-Neo-Impressionism. Unless that already exists. In which case it's probably Neo-New-Neo-Impressionism. Give or take a few 'neo'.
yes, but where will your happy little tree live?
Facts:
- Ross never collected one paycheck from PBS in the 31 seasons his show ran.
- Ross never sold any of his paintings. Instead, he gave them to various PBS stations to auction off with proceeds going to educational public television.
- Ross rehabilitated injured animals in his youth and continued to do so as an adult. He was even known for bringing some of the animals on the show. The most famous was a squirrel named Peapod.
He made his money selling painting classes in person and licensing his name to painting products.
No mention about his job in the US military ? He was a drill sergeant yelling at people all day.
@@autohmae I've heard about that. He mentioned that he wouldn't yell or raise his voice again if he ever got out of the air force. Thankfully he got out when he did.
@service@cal1.net Did it better cause I never heard of his mentor😭😂
@service@cal1.net no he didnt
the reason his came out like it did vs your's is he prepped his canvas with a thinned out version of white paint he calls "liquid white" which allows the colors to blend togather better
paint quality is... another issue... but even cheap paint can do bob ross wet on wet paintings :3
and your painting isn't bad.. it's just more.. abstract
Abstract! 😂
I thought I'd cry when she said I'll just add some... Water? OMG... No sweetie no!
@@GreySinWhiteLie
I haven't painted since high school and thought the same thing
Yeah I was thinking impressionistic
That's right, I forgot about that.
All you need to know about trying to Bob Ross is that there are no mistakes, just happy little accidents.
Bob Ross was also a United States Air Force Master Sergeant.
😂 by that theory, it’s a masterpiece
He was a drill instructor
@@DianeJennings
It was a fantastic first attempt. This isn't Bob's first time... Cut yourself some slack. Most people don't even try. You were great. 👍
Mr. Ross also *_hated_* that afro. He only kept it because it was so iconic to the image he had.
Lycanthromancer, he actually got rid of the Afro early on his television career, but he wore an Afro wig for his shows.
You’re a joy, for serious. And ol Bob would have loved your effort and your happy go lucky attitude. Excellent craic! 😁
It’s all about the craic!
A greed
She IS a joy! She makes me laugh every time I watch.
Diane: "He's very calm"
Everybody else: Diane is the goddess-queen of understatement.
Can I just say how much I've enjoyed watching you sample iconic television shows from my childhood? I love learning more about Ireland from you, but it's also fun sometimes to get a non-American's perspective on a piece of American culture I've always taken for granted. Like how you had no idea that squirrel was coming. 😂
Glad you enjoy them!! 🥰
@@ronalds.658 Did you not read the original comment? It said thanks for making these videos based on older American television... Then she replied glad you enjoyed them...
He pre-paints the whole canvas with "liquid white". It's how he gets the paint to blend nd move.
As said earlier he says so at the beginning of every show but no one seems to have listened
That facial reaction when the Squirrel shows up is priceless.
Bob has years of day in and day out practice at this point, considering you tried with new items and tools that do not exactly match his and tried to keep up is still impressive how close yours is. He had a thing about telling people in his videos that its okay how ever it turns out if your just starting you will get better also there are no mistake just happy little accidents. He had such a cool, relaxed, down to earth, encouraging and kind personality that he drew people in.
Good point! Brand new supplies of course would take some breaking in, and getting-used-to. I'm not an artist at all, and that idea is self-evident.
Based on the comments, I figured Diane wasn't expecting the squirrel but, Good Lord! Her face! That was hilarious!
Also, Peapod is an adorable name for a squirrel!
When you're 70% through the tutorial before you realize you needed a squirrel in your pocket....that's why my painting never came out nice.
🐿 that’s totally why!
@@DianeJennings omg, your face when you saw that squirrel! 😅 it should have been the thumbnail
I forgot about the squirrel.
@@DianeJennings fyi: Bob Ross and his wife raised squirrels. If you watch the series from the beginning, you will actually see the squirrel(s) grow up.
Peapod the pocket squirrel!
Most Americans had their first ASMR experience watching Bob Ross.
The fact that you keep churning vlogs for us while captives in our own homes is appreciated......🙃
Aww I appreciate your appreciation. It’s been a challenge!
@@DianeJennings Also, glad to see you're doing well (as can be). When we don't hear from you for a bit, we worry.
You were trapped in your home during the coof,? That sucks.

Was Bob Ross a drill instructor in the Air Force?
Thanks for your service, Bob and those who have served
Tonka DRIVER I’m not sure about that, he retired an E-8 after 20 years of service.
@@dvdbluraydude3038 I know that's right...but the RC had both of your backs! there's a reason those aircrews are referred to as "silent warriors". best wishes to you on this 4th of July
I used to turn on episodes of Bob Ross when I was a teenager and his voice would just make me fall asleep. ❤️. He painted 3 versions of the same painting for every episode he taped. They have them all stored in a warehouse. They are not on display and nobody can purchase them, they are not for sale. Sad really.
I always fell asleep and was upset when I'd wake up and it was over. I wonder why they won't sell them?
I still watch "Joy of Painting" when I can't sleep or am stressed.
I remember hearing that some of them they gave away actually.
They did in fact sell them. Individual ones went to local PBS stations as a one time bonus for donations to your local PBS. While others were sold at auction for various charities.
My understanding is they are working on a museum for the paintings but they are VERY hard to get for sure
This is one of those times when someone from the U.S. South would say, "Bless her heart." 🙈
I don't know if you did it but... one of the crucial aspects to a Bob Ross painting is you put a layer of liquid/undryed paint on the canvas first, white in this tutorial it seems, so when you paint everything blends really well. Either way you did a great job because we all had fun watching!
**DIANE!** You've stumbled upon an American saint, an absolutely wonderful, kind person without a mean bone in his body! Bob Ross is a national treasure, not for his paintings (which were amazing!), but for his kindly personality, and what a wonderful, kind person he was every day in real life! True fact: he started off in the Air Force, as a military man! After leaving the military life honorably, he decided that he never wanted to hear yelling or screaming or barking orders ever again, so he took up painting, and his calm, relaxing demeanor!
What you're missing (I'm a painter myself, so I know this), is that he does a "wet-into-wet" technique, where the canvas is already wet with primer, so the colors blend together more easily!
Believe me, Bob Ross is a saint, just the best kind of person! He even set up a school for painting in Japan, and there are pictures of him standing with his Japanese students all holding their "Bob Ross-style" paintings and obviously loving the whole thing. There's a reason his show was called... "The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross!" :)
Happy Little Trees for you and Chewie! And there are no mistakes, just happy accidents! :) (those are both Bob Ross-isms!) :)
Aww lovely info!
It took me a long time to figure out that he pre-treated his canvas with white that helped with all the blending. He says so at the beginning of every episode, but kids don't really pay attention. There was an Italian guy that did this kind of thing too. He always said fire it in there when making trees.
Sneaky!!
Is he the one that called it magic white? Or was that the Italian guy?
that was bill alexander...and he was german
Ahahah yeah man me too. Also lynseed oil.
Bill Alexander. He was German. Gave off a different vibe than Bob Ross. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Alexander_(painter)
My favorite comment about Bob Ross came from someone on “I Love the 80s”. He said Bob Ross has a beautiful vista in 15 minutes, whereas he has something that looks like the dog peed on the canvas.
Diane: "I'm just adding water. I think it might help it blend."
Me: Oil and water don't mix... 😂
my thoughts exactly
Ohhhh
@@DianeJennings
Yes, when you see Bob dip his brush in the cup and shake it off, the cup is filled with paint thinner. That's how you clean off oil paint. I don't know if the term is the same in Ireland, I'm sry. Still, a valiant effort. And likely much better than mine would have been. You inspired me to find out, lol. I'll let you know how it turns out. Wish me luck. 😕
Liquid white or magic whits
Yeah... I don't know much about art, but I was like, "Didn't she say those were OIL paints?" 😂
😂. Welcome to the wonderful world of Bob Ross. The only artist I have ever seen, that does landscapes, with home improvement tools. ❤️
He does NOT use household painting brushes. They are large ARTIST brushes made of natural and not synthetic hair. If you were to try to use a house painting brush it would NOT work with his technique. Bob has said this himself on more than one occasion.
"I really did try." Bob Ross is proud of you for trying and having fun.
She just fills me with joy. You should do an Irish Q&A (your American/Australian/whatever viewers can ask questions about living in Ireland/the Irish)
Well done! I admire your bravery in sharing your efforts with us.
You had many little happy accidents.....congrats!
So many!
I'd say 2:14, when you realized you didn't have a two inch brush, which is commonly used for things like house painting.
And honestly, I think it's fine for a first effort. Bob spent a lot of years perfecting his technique, which is why he makes it look so easy.
Keep in mind, however, that brushes used for painting houses and the like will NOT work for his technique. Bob himself has said this. I suggest that anyone interested in attempting a painting like his first watch "The Grandeur of Summer"

I'm a 51 year old American and I'd never even heard of Bob Ross until I got on Reddit a few years ago and saw people comparing him to Mr. Rogers. This is the first time I've ever seen one of his shows.
FWIW, I liked your painting.
Wow. That's like not knowing who the president is. Holy crow.
Bob often compared himself to Fred Rogers
I always think of Bob Ross and Mr Rogers as being alike. They are both very relaxing
I'm 37, when I was a toddler and young child (age 2.5-6, I believe), my mom said she was so grateful for Bob Ross, cause I was a VERY active child and never really stopped moving/talking til Bob Ross came on. It was the only show I watched she said wasn't annoying, the only one I watched 100% of each episode, and the only time I was ever still and quiet. 🤣😅
I also put this on for my ADHD kids. They love the soothing tone he speaks with. Just a treasure.
I like abstracts, so your version of the painting actually does have some appeal to me! The entertainment value really spiked when you started accidentally knocking your canvas down and getting paint everywhere. "The Joy of Frustration and Adrenalin!"
I like your version Dianne!
When you said "who wants it", I imagined hands shooting up all over the world!
I know right, as soon as she said it I was like "hell yeah I do" 😂. Seems not many others did
I was thinking she should auction it off to help fund a set of genuine Bob Ross supplies.
She should auction it
I look forward to the episode where you have a pocket squirrel.
Me too! 🐿
Chewie three!
His 20 year career as an Air Force NCO is why his voice is so calming, after 20 years of screaming at people for being late/out of uniform/not cleaning the barracks/etc and hating every second of it he made a vow he'd never raise his voice again. He grew up around Orlando, FL (my home town) and lived here when he passed away. I've met one of his next door neighbors who confirmed he had a back porch full of cages with injured wildlife that he took care of, and I've met more than one person who wound up in line with him at the grocery store. Everyone said he was the same in person in real life as he was on camera, just a really sweet person. I'm always glad to see someone keeping his memory alive :-)
Her face when the squirrel came out lol. And you dont need a random squirrel when you have a random Chewie!
I think you did pretty well for the first time. Tell ED you’d like to see her do better. ❤️U🍀🇮🇪🇺🇸
Exactly!!
If I squint really hard to the point my eyes are almost closed your painting looks identical! Honestly though Good job better then I could do :).
This is one of my favorite Bob Ross reactions! Slapstick and appreciation!
Good to see that you are having fun. Never let the fear of failure keep you from enjoying something. Just have a couple of pints and try again 😉
Cheers 🍻
Water and oil don’t mix. Oh no! I wish I was there to help a little. You’re so sweet I wanted to be so proud you with some gorgeous giant piece. I’m still proud of you, you tried that more than most people. Btw you might like one of those painting tutorial class with wine. They’re super cute. Anyway I enjoy all your videos. Stay well.
BOB " no mistakes just happy little accidents"
I'm sure he wasnt talking about you.
I knew you where screwed at 1:28
Bob Ross paints are worth every singal penny
Me too
9:41 is the realization that everyone has when trying to follow along to Bob Ross. He makes it look so damn easy, though, doesn't he?
Magic White is a base coat made by Bill Alexander, Bob Ross's Teacher, then when Bob Ross starting painting on PBS, he painted the wet on wet technique he learned using the Magic white, but he called it Liquid White..
The Magic White is a mixture of White oil Paint and Linseed oil, and Thinner basically, but Bill Alexander had his own secret ingredients, and it was never made for Acrylic paint, you put the magic white on your canvas as a base coat to make it sleek, slick, smooth and slippery, and the paints blend beautifully, your paints when applied will lighten in color and give you different values to you colors without you having to even think about it.
All you need is some happy little trees.
🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲😄
@@DianeJennings Also, it didn't turn out bad. Remember, Picasso had to start somewhere!
Bob Ross was in the US Air Force and learned to paint during the time he spent in Alaska. That's why most of his paintings are landscapes. He was stationed not far from where I live
What went wrong is that the canvas was not prepared with liquid white. This helps with blending the colors on the canvas, like primer for eye shadow (mentioned in the beginning of the video). The colors and type of paint he used are from his kit so the colors he gets on the canvas are colors he blended from his kit. The colors do not matter as long as it is the right type of paint but it's easier to follow along with his painting kit. He used various types of brushes made of different materials from his kit than the brushes used in this video. Certain types of brushes are used for different types of paint. Bob uses these brushes from his kit to create the effects in his painting. He did not usually use his fingers because he used the wet on wet painting technique. It's ok to not to have the brushes from his kit as long it's the right brushes. He did not used water to blend or to clean the paint, he used paint thinners. He also used a medal canvas knife rather than a plastic one because it was less floppy and can create more steadier strokes. In earlier episodes he goes into more of how he paints the way he dose.
I'm not trying to mean but, giving constructive criticism. If you were have another go at it, you can see how to improve. You don't need to paint with Bob, you can take your time. Bob just shows how he makes his art.
On a side note, I like how abstract your art came out. It looks good. :)
I’m so early there aren’t any other comments loaded. 😮 This looks like loads of fun Diane, good crack.
SUPER early! Hi Trudes 👋
Craiq
Lol I don't understand everyone's fascination with Bob Ross. And way to call Diane out ED! 😂
Sry you don't get it. Even "simple men" often enjoy art and learning new skills. I love the "simple" people around me that make art of carpentry, music (jugs, trash cans, spoons, etc.), cooking (think Gordon Ramsey), wood carving, sewing (I paint with thread), gardening... Whatever you like. Bob opens the door and invites us into the realm of creation, expanding our human experience... That's why we like him, for what it's worth.
@@sophiedash4026 I'm simple not "simple". LOL I love learning things. I like his paintings. But I know people that act like he's some sort of entity that should be revered. Maybe because he's deceased. Idk. Or maybe it's the fro. 😂
@@justasimpleman7111
I get where you are coming from. For me, it's just inspiration. Whatever you do, be an artist with it. 😉
@@justasimpleman7111
And by saying simple I didn't mean you are stupid. I took it in the spirit that I *think* you meant it. As such, I tailored my response accordingly. I promise, no insult was meant. Plz excuse my lack of clarity.
I heard that he used painting as therapy to deal with PTSD, also his voice is so soothing
I love, love, love Bob Ross. If you are sick, injured, broken hearted, stressed out, or suffering from insomnia, Bob Ross is the ultimate salve for whatever is ailing you. He's seen me through many a dark night. He has the ideal voice for comforting.
Best part of Bob Ross is listening to his mellow voice and gaze restfully as he creates the painting. Just the rhythm and tone of his words as he painted the scenery was positive and restful. just as he describe the features he'd be painting he would include little back stories of each part painted. in your mind the words, the tone, the painting process and the painting were all guided by the happy voice. I never painted along with him; He was the calming therapy after a difficult day outside.
As a young child, I loved watching Bob Ross paint. About the same age I watched Mr Rogers.
Watching Bob Ross is like wrapping yourself in a warm blanket. In fact, I have a Bob Ross throw blanket on my couch!
That's great!
I have honestly never thought to even try to paint along with him.
I've never even really seen his show as a painting tutorial.
I always watch Bob Ross to relax, enjoy life, and think happy little thoughts.
The 'I really did try' was cute as hell. Points for actually painting along with him. I only used to watch him work. It was like guided daily meditation.
My favorite thing was just to watch and listen to Bob Ross and let myself get all hypnotized.
I’ve been so stressed lately, this is just what I needed! Love you gal!❤️❤️❤️
I love the time that Bob Ross saved a baby deer and raised it and released it.
Lol! Hey, this is a great learning experience for you!
I still have my first painting from when I was 4-years-old, and your painting looks WAY better than mine did!
So now you know you need a much bigger pallet, an easel to hold your canvas, and wider brushes for your base layers.
I wouldn't suggest linseed oil with acrylic. Instead, just use paint thinner. You'll want paint thinner anyway to clean your brushes, as the acrylic will turn them into bricks if not thoroughly cleaned. I'd also recommend starting with paint brushes from a dollar store or hardware store; art store brushes - while way higher quality - are gonna get ruined fast by beginners, so go cheap with supplies until you become more proficient.
This is actually a great rule to follow when getting into any hobby. Remember, you can't buy skill; skill must be earned through experience! Buying Gucci gear isn't gonna help you master your fundamentals, and you'll probably have more difficulty as the nicer gear is often built for those who already have mastered the fundamentals. This, as said before, applies to petty much all hobbies.
1. Blend anything with rum, and it'll turn out good. 2. Take a drink every time Diane knocks down the canvas or gets paint somewhere other than the canvas.
Love ya, Diane! The painting is beautiful. I can see your joy being put into it. You really crack me up!
Whenever I'm having trouble sleeping, I pick out a Bob Ross video on UA-cam to watch. So intensely relaxing.
Bob Ross is my #1 ASMR trigger. Happy little trees... 😊
Bob made his paintings look so easy. But not only do you have to have the right equipment, but you also have to have the right paints and the clear background so you and paint "wet on wet." Also, Bob didn't tell people that the painting you saw on the video was the third or fourth time he had painted that particular picture.
I remember as a kid thinking it was magic how he made those beautiful nature scenes appear on the blank canvas.
Don't feel bad, Diane! Bob Ross's show used to come on the tv right when we got home from school. You just watch Bob do his thing and it has a relaxing effect. In hindsight, that's probably WHY my mom always had it on when we got home. Very clever, Mom.
I never realized how good of a painter bob ross was.
You watch Bob cause he's calm and relaxing. Though my dad did learn to paint from watching him, but I have watched hours of him just to relax. I have never attempted to paint along.
You will notice that his two inch brush mostly used for painting corners on walls. It is a specially effective for artwork, when you want to evenly cover a large portion of canvas but still some maintain control of detail. For some interesting texture, you could even use a sponge.
I used my fingers a bit!
After trying to paint for years, I found out that spending a little extra on paint helps but it is the brushes that really make the difference. But don't fret dear, Bob Ross always said it is never wrong, just "happy little accidents."
While he was a great artist, his best contribution was in the positivity that he brought. Bob Ross would never make fun of any attempt, or belittle any (attempting) artist. His kindness and soft manner was an encouragement and a welcome change for a generation.
Nailed it! Now, all Diane needs is a pocket squirrel 🐿
Bob Ross was an Air Force Drill Instructor that took up painting as a way to cope with stress.
Thank you for taking one of my requests for a video. It really made me happy when I saw it pop up in my notifications.
A lot of people don’t put anything but paint on their canvas when doing these painting. Bob Ross always puts on what’s called Liquid White which helps the paint blend easier. Also, Bob Ross loved Animals hence why he had a squirrel. I think if you watch Pappyland you’ll have an easier time following along drawing with him.
Bob Ross is another part of the growing up American holy trinity.
And I think the just having fun part is what led to the Wine and Painting nights.
That guy just had a magic touch for art! Love you Bob!!!
Thanks for the love Diane! I grew up watching that guy! He made art simple for everyone!!!
My grandma called him "the crazy painter". She loved him!
For a first attempt you did quite good. Be proud you got all the way through it and didn't give up. Great job.
The holy trinity of wholesomeness. Bob Ross, Mr. Rogers, and Steve Irwin . Be kind to other people, be kind to yourself, be kind to animals.
as an oil painter, this was so much fun to watch! my favorite video you've made so far :)
Honestly, the finished product was much better than I was expecting based on how it looked part way through.
I actually really do like the way your painting turned out. I think the sky is beautiful and those mountains really worked out nicely.
We Americans love 2 people Mr Rogers and Bob Ross
When I used to come home from junior high school and later high school I used to watched to show and fell to sleep. Not because he was boring, but because he had a nice soothing voice.
I love your painting.
It has an abstract approach that leaves your imagination to wonder.
It's left me happy and relaxed.
Your face when his squirrel popped out of his pocket was EVERYTHING 😂😲😂
Two years of art in school & numerous projects later you're still better than I Luv! Wot a Gas I had watching this😍
💖🐺
I love your mountains and trees. I love the fun you had with this. That's the right way to paint with Bob Ross
Not bad for your first time. The main reason his paint blends that way is because the canvas he's using has a layer of white paint on it already, that is not dry, and that allows the colors to blend easier. As for the large brush (2 inch/5cm) that's an item you would find at your local hardware store ( any shop with a big paint section). I think he uses natural fiber brushes, and a lot of kit brushes are synthetic. The palette knife is a thing of magic in these paintings once you know how to use it.
I would love to see you try another one of these, but I would suggest just watching some of the early Bob Ross videos so you can observe the techniques and apply them yourself.
Ya know what? IT DOESN'T SUCK!! It actually looks kind of like a badass abstract style of a nature painting!
I live in the town where Bob filmed his shows, Muncie, Indiana. I've even been to his former house. It's a beautiful house, in a quiet neighborhood. We're also home to the creator of Garfield the cat. Bob it's still a treasure to our community, and they even restored the studio where his shows were filmed.
It’s abstract and, therefore, it’s exactly as realistic as it should be!
Exactamundo!!
Awwww! This is a great idea! I want Bob Ross in my life, too! I have seen his show on PBS, and always found him to be so soothing. I'm gonna do it! Thank you, Diane!😉
Bob was an awesomly great painter some critical people did not give him the respect this wonderful person deserved Bob your still loved by your People.♥️
Great fun! I was so relieved when you finally got oil paint on that lovely white lace sweater, as it was truly inevitable.
I used to like watching Bob Ross as a kids specifically because of his calm and soothing voice
"Oh, my new pants!" First rule of paint club: no new pants
I think you actually did a pretty decent job...I love your sky and mountains
Even though it's"serious" I still laughed my ass off, thanks for being you Diane
Surprisingly, it does resemble Bob Ross' painting. It's a happy painting. ❤️💜💙💚💛🧡💖🐶
Rumer is when Bob was in the army he was stationed in Alaska and was given the job of camouflaging the buildings and vehicles. To this day they have not found that base again.
Holy cripes! I can not tell any difference between Bob's and yours! You're a genius!😁
I love these videos. They put u in a better mood
Oh my goodness you’re adorable!!! We were so unprepared for any kind of bob ross painting. I remember watching him at every age. He was a very big part of our summers
Diane, I love your painting. There's no such thing as failure when you're making art. Always remember that.
Thanks you for this. I need a smile today. And now I will have one for the rest of the week.
