An experiment testing water purification tablets on dirty water, and examining the water through a microscope and a petri dish. The tablets are only effective against microbes and not heavy metals and chemicals.
The medium used for the petri dish was tryptic soy agar. The dish was incubated for 24 hours at 37 degrees Celsius.
Camera - Nikon D3300
Microscope - Leica ATC 2000
Microscope magnification of each shot is shown in the bottom right hand corner.

I have those same purification tablets but I never use them now I know. They're more effective in clear water versus dirty water.
L
@Ray 'not a fed' Epps, flowing water, rivers, streams, and springs not a stagnant pond.
the other brand tablets I have states it takes 60 mins to have purification effects, so Idk why this one is 5 mins
@lemon9.9 where did you get the 5 minutes from? He literally said the instruction was 30 minutes, and that's what he waited also.
I wonder if it works after 1+hrs? Thank god I never needed to use my emergency water cleaning tablets.
I am fairly sure you're meant to strain the water through a cloth filter before treating it, I do bushcraft, and one solution is to run it through a shemagh or bandana, the microbes can hide inside the larger dirt clumps which defeats the point of the iodine tablets. Multiple filtration steps can also be done, such as filtering through stones, moss, sand, then a cloth barrier - this will keep a lot of protozoa and debris from getting through the filter, and make the water easier to clean with iodine tablets.
Thank you
Thanks!
He did it as stated in the instructions🤷♂️
I'm fairly sure you're meant to watch the video where he says exactly this.
@@boogiebomber2191 No. No he did not.
Your microscopy channel is one of the very best. It's edifying and relaxing at the same time. Keep up the great work.
I've said it once long ago and I'll say it again. You having a live stream with relaxing music and your microscope zoomed in on microscopic life would be great to watch.
Despite being a year late, I agree
@@theradjo5355 he pop up in your recommendation today too?
@@aliciatiller Yes!!
This is similar to the cool stuff an awesome science teacher would pull up during class to help explain their lessons to the students. I sincerely hope some of them have found your content and done so! This is fascinating.
love the voice over, much better than the captions in older vids
By the way, thank buddy for whatever you are doing..🙏
You are doing a great work..I always suggest your channel to my friend who have forgotten the school biology lessons 😭😀
L
Thank you for testing. This is good data and also great hypothesis 🙏🏻
Always filter first and then use tablets as extra security. I do a bunch of back country fly fishing and have to get water from various sources. I always use a tablet after filtering from streams, etc.
Great stuff! Thanks for the knowledge!
Awesome. I loved your experiment and your conclusion of it. Thank you
would love to see BRITA filter under the microscope :3
That is fascinating!!! Thanks for the experiment!
Huge shouts to you Sci inspi... what a fantastic channel you have. I've been Stuck all morning watching...
I loved fermenting plant juices and feeding em to roots... I've played with lots of beneficial bacteria an microbes.... but never owned a scope.
My favorite ferment to create would be lactobicillius serum... a prebiotic for plants.
Really enjoyed the narration in this video
it's funny 'cause I subd after watching the boiling dirty water experiment, then watched the lifestraw one (because I got a couple of those) and the came to see this beause I bought this as well... love this channel!

Could you maybe do a vid where you rub your hands really fast together, to produce that characteristic burnt smell, and then collect a sample of the first layers of the stratum corneum from your hand, to see if any skin cells were actually burned off?
This is my hypothesis on what happens when we rub our hands as such;
the friction generated heat does indeed burn skin cells, but only the superficial, first layer of cells in the stratum corneum.
So the superficial layer gets burned off, but because that first cell layer is so thin, the heat is quickly diffused into the rest of the layers and the air, so it only feels warm, not really hot.
Iwasnt able to find any info on this myself, so Id appreciate your imput in form of eaither vid or comment.
Cuz Im really curious abtbthis, Ive wondered since I was a kid lol
My tattoo artist told me that hands and feet are difficult to tattoo without fading because they shed cells faster than anywhere on the body ......don't know if this is true or not.
@@bmphil3400 Inside your mouth as well.
Some dumbass in school got his name tattood on the inside of his lower lip, it faded very quickly.
@@bmphil3400 capillary action pulls the ink deep into the tissue so I don't think skin shedding makes much sense.
Woooow! So glad you did this video! I will be getting my sister a filter because those tablets are a no go!
They do work, but in clear water. You can see that in part 2. Water Purification Tablets, Part 2
ua-cam.com/video/mXXhvquXsd0/v-deo.html
@@sci-inspi Hey, I did watch that video but in an emergency there is no guarantee you’ll come across clear water. I’ll get her a water filter in addition to the tablets. Thanks again!
Nice ! Good to know for future use
You should've used the P&G coagulant, I've always wondered if it's really that effective.
I actually have these tablets and I have always wondered how much microbes it will remove and now I know how good they work so in a survival situation I will find the clearest water because that’s what they work best in, thanks for the experiment man!
This is a really interesting experiment, definitely need to put the water though a filter to get rid of turbidity before using iodine tables to be safe
That’s a great summary and a good experiment
Wow thank you!! I gained some insights in this video
Thank you for this video
i go hiking and now knowing that these wont do a thing for me thank you
This was a wonderful experiment and I'll be conducting my own; but in the case of water filtration through gravel, sand and charcoal.
Thanks for making this video
Thank you.
I’m about to be tent boondocking it in Alaska in the next month or so until I “make it” there and I just wanted to say thank you because I was looking at those tablets on Cabelas as a way to purify water.
These do work, although the water has to be pretty clear. I did a follow up video showing it. I also did the lifestraw and the Katadyn hiker and they also work well.
@@sci-inspi I watched your “boiled water” test then you followed it up with the life straw, seemed like a pretty good setup; only thing I’m not sure of is how good any of this is filtering out chemicals such as fluids from cars and other man made chemicals that may be present in the water. This is of course strictly for survival since I no longer plan on drinking water straight out the river unless the method used is safe to do so. Happy Holidays.
For chemicals you would need a filter specifically for that. Although if you are in natural areas that aren't polluted, you should be fine. Happy Holidays to you as well!
Glad to see that
Video Request: Effect of Chlorine Solution on Contaminated Water :)
These are the older style tablets, I stopped carrying them years ago as my backup. Nowadays we have chlorine tablets in packets that don't introduce the same weird tastes and are more effective. These are what I carry as my backup purifier with my first aid kit, where these little bottles don't fit very well, And there's risk of spilling/ruining the whole bottle.
Could you please name the brand? I'm looking forward to buying some!
Try using a water purification treatment with a flocculant included. It reduces the turbidity and then chemically treats the water for a much cleaner water. Chlor-floc is one brand. P&G purifier of water is another one.
If I might suggest. Try finding a flocculant like aluminum sulfate (styptic pens or rock salt deodorant tend to be good sources). See how flocculation alone improves the quality of the water. If you remove the solid particles in water. You remove their food. They want to stay near their food. That’s the idea.
The key is to get running water, either stream or lake to stream, rivers are kinda iffy because you don't know if they have nuclear waste in them. FYI! Also it's best to carry a filter straw with you or water filter system, which doesn't contaminate the water that you are drinking. Also you can write down on a piece of paper and laminate it of bleach drops to liters of water or gallons for that fact. Keep it with you just in case you are out in the woods drink something horrible and start to get a little sick to your stomach at least you can take the paper out and look at it to remember what the right amount of drops to water you need in an emergency.
Chlorine based tablets may be more effective.
Interesting. Video
I would love to see some of the P&G Puri Bag packets and how microbes stand up to them. I would hypothesize that all of the microbes would be killed off due to the chlorine released after the flocculation and coagulation chemicals are used up, however I am not sure if this is true because I don't have the equipment to test it on my own.
I’ve used a lot of disinfectant and cleaning methods over the years and probably like iodine the least. It’s hard to beat pump style ceramic or engineered fiber filters they’re usually capable of at or below 0.2 micron and pared with say chlorine bleach or iodine can filter and kill everything. I e even tried UV bags which basically just leave filtered water out to be irradiated by the sun in a special bag and nothing is as fast or trustworthy as the pump filters, other than maybe a battery powered filter. In a real pinch I’ve filtered water through quite a few layers of cotton (a shirt folded over many times) and that was able to get the big stuff out and it was iodine after that. Iodine tabs were good as they are solid but I’ve also used bleach, I’m quite small concentrations with good results, maybe a cap full to a gallon if I recall, with a little more in rinse water after washing dishes. I grew up in the back woods and have been outdoorsy my whole life without ever getting sick from food or water (knock on wood), though I have known people that have gotten sick.
I like those tabs! I have a question if I have expired water in bottles can I still use a purifier like a berkey or potable water to retain it? Thanks 🙏
Yeah, I think just very crude filtration with gravity and then through some cloth could change results drastically.
The iodine was used up. That nasty water is going to have a much higher demand. Cleaner water would have a iodine residual after the disinfection, hence the second bottle the remove the iodine taste. I manage a water treatment plant, fyi
Thank you for the confirmation. That is what I suspected, although I wanted to find some scientific evidence to support my hunch, which is why I cited that WHO report.
What happens if you add ethyl alcohol to dirty water? Does he disinfect it?
There is difference its said in the instruction it will disinfect drinking water never said dirty forests or pond water
The percentage of bacterias are different.
I would be interested to see if the effect would be improved with more tablets.
See the end of the vid; why would you want to drink that?
Thanks, now I can do the same!
Science!
Why do the the screw threads need to be moistened? Does this create a better seal? And why would a better seal be necessary if you are going to open it immediately after anyway?
The bacteria said: “Mhmm iodine!”
City water goes through multiple steps. I would 1st use a cloth, 2nd a Sawyer and 3rd add the tablets to the filtered water.
Try using a whole bottle of the iodine tablets, or way less water for the two tablets
No, that would make a person very Ill. The proper amount of tablets can cause nausea vomiting or diarrhea on it's own if you use extra you're almost guaranteed to get sick don't use extra tablets just filter the water before using the tablets
@@CHRISTisKing197 Good to know. Would still be cool to see the results of examining the water
so youre basically god to these microbes, and the table as COVID 💣 Intresting
Yeah, get the water from a flowing stream, filter it, then use the iodine. Murky warter needs whole diffrent method of treating
Can you look at the powder that was featured in Mark Rober's videos? I don't remember the same of the powder but it'd be cool to see it.
For anyone looking p&g water disinfectant works the best for dirty water to get it clear then you can use iodine.
Nice! Can you put a wound under the microscop?
Better with filtration methods, such as Sawyer filter for dirty water, doesn't kill viruses though, so can use disinfectant tablets as a secondary purification method.
Oh shit I was not ready to hear a voice on this channel
Nothing beats boiling it. If you can pack tablets you can pack a fire starter and some sort of metal container.
When the water is cloudy you are supposed to double the dosage.
can you do a microscope of tap water and see if any micro dots thingys exist
How about taking a mask and seeing exactly what they do and do not catch? Would be interesting to see!!
Could you do a video on the Big Berkey water filter? They actually have an add on your page claiming they remove 99.9% of virus’s. They make a lot of claims, but independent tests are hard to come by. Thanks for these videos
Viruses*
Viruses can't be seen on visible light microscopes like his ones are
Ive used those a ton, but I wont be using them again.
Suggestion if you haven’t already: Do a dirty drink from a milk container and put it back in fridge. Microscopy it a few days later.
Damned!
Water you'll encounter is going to have a lot more than leaves dying in it.
Holy shit, you speak!
I wish you tried doubling the dose
Yup….. literally throwing them out today
I hopee you also tested same water with double amount of tablet
What about bleach disinfectant per WHO standards?
Hi can you pls. test the P&G water purification packs? thanks
you have to filter the water for the tablets to work
Just stumbled here and I really enjoy your channel. If you’re looking for suggestion, I’d ask to see maple sap or syrup. (It’s that time of year-we just made syrup and thought it’d be cool to see the minerals, bacteria, sand, etc.)

There is a great deal more opportunity to learn from failed experiments from successful ones that do what you expect. Always filter all the junk can out of water. The particulates hide microbes from antimicrobials and react with antimicrobial rendering them harmless. The first thing you do to water you use to drink is filter or flocculate it to get all the particles out and make it as clear as you can 20 you need as few chemicals as possible.
I used to use chlorine tablets. How effective are those?
Background music from Remidial Jazz Lab... the lost tapes...
Could you maybe also try micropur? That is the type most readily available in Europe
Love the content ma dude! Random suggestion but could you do a pancake or waffle next?
would this be effective against toxoplasmosis for cats who use the toilet? would one of these in the toilet work against any possible oocysts?
I would like to see you do a head to head comparison of the top backpacking water purification products. LifeStraw(I know you already did a video on that one), Sawyer MINI, MSR MiniWorks, Katadyn Hiker, and maybe a SteriPen Adventurer to see which one comes out on top.
Can you try different vapor juice such as nicotine free as well as Juul vapor juice under the microscope please?
Do you think that bacteria and viruses and microbes are sentient beings with some level of consciousness? Or..do they just kind of "exist"?
I guess the lifestraw will be my filter of choice
I'm going down a rabbit hole now
How about the uv light to disinfect water?
Try P&G Purifier of Water?
Can you see Curd under microscope ?
Why I never got a notification from you😕
Coz u didn't press the bell icon may be
You only need nine drops of chlorine to purify 1 gallon of water, my old house had a pond and we use that water for drinking we ran it through a sand filter and we ran through an idolizer our water did taste a bit like iodine, but it took very little to purify enough water for a household, I think maybe these tablets I cut so much that there’s very little iodine in them. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸%
Please make a skin sample
Those arnt ment to sterilize water, its for stabilizing clean water for long term storage.
will liquid iodine for wounds work just as well for water
Thanks! Chlorox?
Try the PNG water purification powder
lifestraw then those tablets? Wonder what would happen.
Please do the same experiment but using POOL SHOCK.
