She does actually! You can see it in the movie when they first have breakfast at the castle. She takes out a message from the witch for Howl which then burns up when he tries to take it.
"It's my house dress, I want to feel pretty in it". This just *hit* me. I should wear things at home as well that makes me feel pretty. Unexpected truth bomb before 8 am first day back at Uni after the holidays.
I don’t know if anyone’s said this but Sophie’s dress actually does have pockets! When she, Howl, and Markl sit down to breakfast, she reaches into her pocket and pulls out a note from the Witch of the Waste
I remember wearing dresses like that when I was a child a very long time ago. I have no idea how many time I tore a skirt loose climbing trees and other things in my dresses. The skirts always went back on as if by magic and I kept exploring the world. Looking back, I'm sure my grandmother put my cloths back together. She also started me on my journey of making clothing. Mostly I wear jeans now so I can still climb when the need arises. The doctor said no falling not no climbing and I climb not fall.
Huh. It's so interesting to see you interpret the dress. I mean, we were looking at the same drawing but I apparently see something entirely different! What you call lace, I always thought was the edge of her high collar slip. And if I were to sew this, I'd opt for hook and eye side opening with functional buttons on the bodice so that I could put the dress over my head. It came out so good! You look extremely cute in this.
Yeah, I was thinking along the same lines. Like Christine mentioned any closure method that Sophie could do herself easily, would be very fitting with her character, and I feel the same way about putting the dress over the head, it seems like something Sophie would opt for. That being said, the finale result is gorgeous regardless.
Ghiblicore has got to be the best cottagecore subgenre ever. Also, this is a super rendition of Sophie's dress. Will add it to my very long sewing wishlist 😂
I’ve had a vision - you open a sewing school for all us ghiblicore fans in the south of France and this is the uniform. I love it SO much. Dress of dreams.
Christine wearing ghiblicore dresses while making more Ghibli core dresses is fantastic also - it's your dress, making it the way you want it makes total sense
This is always how I imagined Sophie’s dress in real life. It feels very, well... her! Quaint, comfy, and utilitarian have always been her vibes, to me. Great job!
the dress is super cute! Howl`s moving castle is my favourite Ghibli movie :) I think the made up fantasy version of the dress was the right choice. A real `victorian` dress would have also been pretty, but it wouldn`t have been Sophie`s dress. Btw, a always just want to tell you how much I admire you. Having a fulltime job, a baby, and still making time to sew and even edit videos. you`re wonder woman :)
Oh I've been umming and aahing about that Folkwear pattern so this is very timely for me; I have a ridiculous amount of lilac linen on order to make it from. Thank you!
It's ADORABLE! I. Love. This. Dress. The gathers going into that smooth waistband, the stand-up collar...it's just so cute! And you look so cute in it! Long live Ghiblicore!
I am currently binging your content, much love!!! Also, I love how whenever you see a woman sewing her own dress, they ALWAYS add pockets. Come on, fashion industry, get with it!
Ghiblicore is life! I love how you adjusted the details to suit your personal needs, cute and practical, Sophie would approve. Oh, and your sentient cloud of a dog is so precious.
@@chacker21 I do love the book more than the movie too!I've also read the third book of the series and I liked it too. Of course it wasn't as good as HMC but it was still nice. You should read the Chrestomanci Chronicles they are sooo good, written by Diana wynne jones too!
I am in awe of How much you do! How can you have a family, work insane shifts as a doctor AND come home to make beautiful complicated things! I do not understand How you manage It ALL! ❤️❤️❤️ Congratulations! Superwoman of real life!
Love the concept behind this! I think the apron needs 2 large-ish patch pockets. I always find little things that need to go into another room when I clean and I don't want to put them in my dress. Very cute project!
Howl's Moving Castle is one of my favorite books! And Hayao Miyazaki's adaptation is my favorite book adaptation! Your dress very much does justice to Sophie 😍
I GOT CHILLLSSSSS WHEN I SAW THE CANDY CANDY IMAGE OMGGGG YESSSSS! My mom grew up watching it in Mexico and introduced it to me when I was in middle school! Omg I’m getting so emotional lolll I’m so excited!
Oh my goodness, Candy Candy!! I hope we get to see that project. Her outfits are the cutest! Also this project turned out so lovely. The movement in that skirt! You captured Sophie's dress so well.
This is my favorite kind of costuming video--seeing the thought process behind how to "build" the pieces and modifying the available patterns/shapes to create the desired look
It’s so lovely!! 😍 I’m working on a “historically accurate” Sophie and I actually found a day dress pattern from the 1890s that is very close but that Gibson girl Pattern is so beautiful!!
Yes, Yes, Yes!!! I made an 1890's Sophie a few years ago, as if I was making a costume I wanted to make it historical! I love what you did! I need to do more "everyday" costumes!
I love it!!! I have been wanting to make a Sophie house dress for YEARS! I have struggled finding the right pattern that would mimic her yoke and I even got a few wrapper patterns but they didn’t cut it. I do have this blouse pattern and never made the connection. Genius!
My insomnia has accomplished something tonight! Im awake for this!!! I've been waiting for this video 💕 YOU are inspirational, as is your work! Sophie's dress has been done justice 👗
I love how comfortable and practical this is. Most retro/vintage/historical youtubers make clothes that are too beautiful to wear or make things that look really uncomfortable or make things that look so dressy. This looks like something I would just throw on to wear around the house, to run errands in, to have a casual lazy day. It's not ridiculously put together but it's not frumpy. I love it.
I absolutely adore this!! Comfy, cozy, practical, and with pockets!! And your decision to hide snaps with the buttons blew my mind. Thank you for sharing!! ❤️
This dress is on my list of makes for next year once I’ve had my baby! I’ve had the fabric sitting around forever. This video was super helpful for planning, thank you! It looks adorable.

Super cute!! I love the idea of snaps hiding back buttons for getting dressed.
I’ve been wanting to make the yellow dress for a bit this will be such a great help for that! I’ll probably do it in two pieces so I can wear them as separates!
I love that you used a heavier weight fabric with more texture and body to it! It makes the dress so much more believable than just using quilting cotton
Yayy! more ghiblicore! ive been following the ghiblicore tag on tumblr for like 3 years, its great to see more great ghibli-inspired content! this is so beautiful, it inspires me!
My favorite movie, and one of my favorite books. 🥰 This was a joy to watch, and one day I too will have a Sophie dress or three of my own. Thank you for such a wonderful video!
I love the process, your editing and narration, THE DOG, your very cute after photos with the hats. I appreciate the info on the carbon footprint. Now I'm going to watch the whole thing again.
This is adorable! I always thought that Sophie's dress was like maybe stepped into or pulled over her head and then the yolk buttons were there to make that possible while being able to be fastened back up for modesty. Or perhaps fastened at the side on the bodice and skirt, with the buttons on the yolk there to more easily allow one's head to go through.
I've wanted to make myself some gibli dresses for some time now, but I never knew how to start, so I pushed it to the back of my head... now with your videos I have an idea how to start! Thank you so much!
Second only to My Neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving castle is my all time favorite Studio Ghibli movie. I was excited to see what way you would go with Sophie's dress and it didn't disappoint. Thank you so much for sharing your process and insights into your design choices, it makes your video's even that much more compelling. The dress looks absolutely darling.
Loved the video and honestly one of the most natural transitions into a sponsor I’ve heard in a while. Ghibli-core really is something to strive for:’)
It's my dream to be able to freely do these kinds of things as well in the future. I hope one day, I'd look back and remember the people that inspired me to keep going. Thank you so much!
I am currently planning a Sophie cosplay, and this video was so insightful and helpful! I loved your point of not gathering the bodice at the sides to avoid losing definition, and I hadn't considered cartridge pleating to give the skirt a nicer gather. All in all this video was super informative and I really appreciate your detailed construction points!
Do I hate and refuse to wear dresses at all costs for myself? Yes absolutely But I love love love watching you make them and they look amazing on you. Thanks for sharing your skills with us!
Dream dress! Honestly the modifications you made to ground it in the real world are perfect. It has all of the aesthetic simplicity of the original while being something that would be fun to wear. I love it so much!!

Super cute result! (My thought is the three buttons would be functional. The dress would have a loose wide back, with a bow pulling it together. The bow would be two ties, attached at the side seams at the waistline and tied together in the back. Will probably do a couple of adjustments here and there, but hope that it'll come out even half as wonderful as yours
GhibliCore is fucking iconic.

I've always wanted this dress in my life but not cosplay quality, actual garment quality so I am SO making this
Exactly, because I’d wear it out and about! All the time! I’d make this dress and various ones there of as my whole wardrobe!
So true! I want to wear dresses like this one everyday. But I don't know where to get a pattern and I need to start learning how to sow...
The most relatable thing is you trying to film, and your little one running into the room as your spouse goes "oh no oh no, time to go!"
