Richard and Dave on the bass were just amazing standouts on this track. Everyone was so right... this is quite bleak. It really does bring to mind so many of our problems and the human condition itself.

I’ve said it before, this is their most fully realised album. Not the most famous, but my favourite. Biting vicious lyrics

note that Whitehouse refers to Mary Whitehouse, a UK campaigner for cleaning up TV in the seventies, she did not like bad language, violence, any reference to sex whatsoever and, well, you get the idea (3rd verse, Hey you, Whitehouse...)
But as Led Zeppelin said, "because you know sometimes words have two meanings".
She was an awful woman. She tried to get Tom & Jerry taken off the TV because she considered it too violent. But, as the self-appointed president of the National Viewers' and Listeners' Association, the BBC and ITV listened to her, afraid of her sharp tongue and the right-wing religious bigots who orbited her like flies around dead meat. Luckily, Tom and Jerry stayed!

I only learned that in the last year, from reaction videos! As an American, I had no reason to think Roger wasn't just taking shots at our government, and in the context of the song, it made total sense.
Roger and Richard have been killing this” just as Dave launches into one his patented outro solos teeming with bitterness and anger. Incredible album.
Rick was the soul of PF, his atmospheric keyboards are essential to the emotional tone of their sound. RIP. And yes, Dave killed on bass as well as lead.

That is absolutely David Gilmour on lead guitar in the outro. He also does bass and the voice box (pig sounds), as well. Roger on rhythm and lead vocals, not lead guitar.
And this is where David pulls out the voicebox and gets angry with his guitar.... and it's f''king awesome. I never ever get tired of listening to this album,,, and is my one album to pick if I could only have one PF album.
Say what you want about his politics, but Roger Waters was one of the top rock lyricists of the 70's, full stop.
I remember the ‘77 tour in Cleveland stadium. Don’t ever recalling an airplane flying over a stadium during a concert ( sure it’s not legal today except for military flyovers). Not a small plane but the band’s commercial airliner buzzing the top of the stadium right on time of the first gilmour note. Was just the beginning of the greatest concert experience that I have ever seen and heard. Great channel keep it up

I was at that Cleveland show. They did get fined for it, but it wasn’t a huge amount.
I WAS AT OLYMPIC STADIUM IN MONTREAL, THE BIG O. THEY HAD A HOUSE SIZE PIG ON ROPE N POLLEY, DIAGONAL ACROSS THE STADIUM. A ROPE HANGING OFF IT… PEOPLE WOULD HOLD THE ROPE, THEY WOULD PULL THE LINE TILL THEY LET GO… THE PIG THEN FLEW N BOUNCE ALL OVER. ALSO A 30’ BALLOON MAN THEY FLEW OUT THE HOLE OF THE STADIUM… THE BEST CONCERT EVER FOR ME 👊🖖

Firstly, many congrats on the sponsrship Lee! Well done! You will only go from strength to strength with the great reactions you bring us. Just a little historical context for "Animals" : in 1977, punk rock ruled the airwaves. Prog was scorned, laughed at, definitely out of fashion. Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols was wearing a "I Hate Pink Floyd" T-shirt (although, as it turned out, just to seem rebellious: he later admitted to being a big fan). The charts were full of energetic, poppy, 3-minute songs by punk bands, and it was glorious: a breath of fresh air had swept through the music industry and swept prog away, as kids found they didn't need a lot of musical virtuosity to write and play fun and memorable songs. It was a younger generation of angry, bitter working-class kids, fed up with the perceived pretentious noodlings of middle-class, virtuoso prog musicians and their beard-stroking fans. They were angry at being ignored, shoved on the rubbish pile by society, having no musical voice of their own.
What they were most angry about was that they seemingly had no future. Britain was broke. There was record unemployment. The electricity workers and the miners, who dug the coal for the power stations, had staged lengthy strikes for more pay, and many followed: lorry drivers (truckers), health service workers, even gravediggers. The country was on its knees, and had to go to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a bailout. I remember, just two or three years earlier, having to do my school homework by candlelight because there was no power. In 1974 Britain had been on a three-day working week to save power (and of course as kids we loved only going to school three days a week!). It all culminated in the "Winter of Discontent" in 1978/9 which swept away the Labour government, who had presided over the worst peacetime conditions the UK had seen since the Industrial Revolution, and brought Margaret Thatcher's Conservatives to power. I started University in the north-east of England in the autumn of 1978: lectures were cancelled because there was no light or heating. There was no hot water to wash any clothes, and my room in the hall of residence where I lived had ice on the inside of the windows every morning.
So things were bleak, dark and getting worse in 1977. In the middle of all this, Pink Floyd released "Animals", capturing the national mood of hopelessness perfectly. Dark, oppressive and chilling, it told us of the dogs and pigs who had brought us to despair, and the unthinking sheep who, bamboozled into servitude, had failed to revolt against them (although, in "Sheep", it doesn't quite end that way...but no spoilers). It was Pink Floyd's zeitgeist album, with the harshness and brutality of punk rock married to Floyd's intelligence, eloquence and incomparable mastery of sound. Punk Floyd, indeed. It was a kick in the crotch for those who had declared prog irrelevant and passé: Roger Waters said more about the ills of society in three songs than a hundred punk artists had ever said, and far more eloquently. For those of us raised on prog, it demonstrated that the genre was still alive and kicking, still had a lot to say and could still innovate, taking us to other worlds, other moods and feelings as much as it had ever done.
"Animals" may not be many people's favourite Pink Floyd album, but it is mine. Because I remember those desperate days of 1977, when, a year before leaving school, the future seemed bleak, dark and uncertain, promising nothing instead of the green uplands and sunlit pastures which should have been in my future. And every time I listen to the album I am taken back to the urban decay, malaise, unhappiness and brutality of 70s Britain. Far from depressing me, it makes me happy that things are so much better now, especially for young people. We should all be grateful that most kids have not had to endure the hardships we went through back then.
Within just a few years of her election in May 1979, Margaret Thatcher had transformed the British economy and it was boom time again, with Britain again being a rich country, brimming with energy and opportunity. Her government did a lot of terrible things: they closed the coal industry, sold off other nationalised industries cheaply to their rich friends, restricted the unions so that it was far harder for workers to strike and introduced the "Me!" culture of selfishness so pervasive today. But on the other hand, a lot of darkness was swept away: people dared to have hopes and dreams again, and some light returned to the world. Britain in the 1980s changed from being an industrial economy to a service economy, primarily in financial markets, and we manufactured nothing any more. Countless lives in the old industrial cities were ruined as jobs in factories and steel mills were swept away: many of those cities fell into permanent decay. But hey, business was booming in banking, the money was flowing like never before into London, as the world financial centre, and that was all that mattered to the Conservatives and their billionaire buddies.
Those angry young men of punk had all but disappeared too, as their meagre talents, in a lot of cases, were not enough to ensure their longevity. Punk erupted in 1976, but by 1978 its light had fizzled out. Nevertheless, some fantastic bands and artists came out of that era who did last the distance: Dire Straits, Ian Dury, Elvis Costello and many more. Have you reacted to Dire Straits yet? If not, you should try "Private Investigations", "Telegraph Road" and the timeless "Sultans of Swing". You'll adore them, I have no doubt.

As an American, thank you for the history lesson. Really. I visited London in 1978 and saw punk remnants, leftovers, and knew a little, but not how it all tied together. It makes more sense to me now, and I appreciate it.

And I am now, because nobody cares about Mary Whitehouse anymore. She did try to clean up British television by making it sort of evangelical-Christian-friendly in ways that are unhealthy, in my view.

An unbelievably awesome album, the biting wit of Roger Waters is perfectly matched by the band in full fligjt, in peak mode, they just take you on an audio journey like no other. In the late '80s I was dating a girl who was a little chubby. I had this song on in the car while driving and when the part came on, "Pig stain on your fat chin", I was singing along as I reached over and I pinched her double chin. Oh boy was that ever a mistake! 😂😂😂
There is so much tension in this album, really one of my favorite albums ever. Definitely in the 'wish this album were longer' bin for me. Gilmour is on fire, Roger is playing completely unreal, sparse lines, the drumming, keys, this album is insane ... and then the lyrics hit you. Pink Floyd is one of the few bands I would ever say are almost mean in their ability to hit you in the feels. They want you to remember. Thanks for the reaction.
I'm so glad you listened to the original album mix this time. There are so many atmospheric sounds from David and Richard that needed to be heard. As I mentioned, they were thinned out a bit in the 2018 Remix of Animals. I'm looking forward to your reaction to 'Sheep'. You are obviously a fan of Richard Wright's work, as am I. The quality of Nick Mason's work cannot be overstated either.
One of the darkest Floyd albums and one of my favourites this song is so right for the time and now.

So impressive how they've absolutely nailed the music that most compliments the theme. This and Wish You Were Here is peak Floyd as far as the band is concerned. Crazy talent throughout the band.
During the tour for the Animals album, they were playing Olympic stadium in Montreal. The giant pink pig got loose, and floated across the Atlantic ocean. It landed in a farmer's field in France.
Nick is the smoothest and then sometimes the crusher. Mostly 4/4 stuff but so succinct that I find myself seeing him leading the rhythm more than filling.
You should have said: 'David and Richard have been killing this'. And this is the case with "Sheep".

The pig in the picture caused all sorts of havoc. They attempted 40 ft inflatable over the plant but it got away and forced shutdown of airports and farmers complaining it caused them trouble. Later the pig was simply superimposed.
I remember listening to this when it first came out with about 5 or 6 of my best friends on a killer Kenwood system. We played it over and over in sheer amazement.( I was going to mention the Purple Micro Dot but decided not too....} Rock on dude !!!
Purple Microdot was big back then. I remember the other students in my high school talking about it in class. 😆

Just as an FYI, the amazing bass here was played by David Gilmour (and on Sheep as well). He is a string instrument GOD.
That guitar solo at the end I find especially spine-tingling and explosive. Gilmour really lets loose. I love that he begins by just hitting than one note for who knows how many bars lol. The whole album is a very angry record. The lyrics are especially scathing of capitalism and greed, but ultimately very personal as well. This has long been referred to as their "punk" record, maybe not musically but lyrically. It doesn't pull any punches in its criticism. The messages here are more relevant than ever. Thanks for your reaction! You know your stuff and are clearly very passionate about music.

I saw Pink Floyd the Animals tour in 1977, on acid, it started raining, but the stage was covered and they played all of animals and a second set with all their hit's, It cost $12 for festival seating, 60,000 people in Anaheim stadium, no stabbing or shootings? Made some friends, no haters unlike now!
Shocked to see Roger Waters did not play bass on Pigs or Sheep. David Gilmour was playing guitar AND bass.
Roger Waters likes the sound of Fretless Bass but can’t play one so David does it for him. This started with A Pillow Of Winds from Meddle (1971)

Great Reaction. From one drummer to another, an absolutely stellar drum performance is by Danny Seraphine of Chicago on one of their earliest hits called "Make Me Smile". The late great Buddy Rich was asked back in the 70's if there were any young, up and coming drummers that impressed him and his response was "Yeah, I like that kid from Chicago. Danny what's his name".
Seraphine’s great. Terry Kath has a wonderful vocal on that song too.

This was the year of the Hiel Talk box. David uses it here and the same year Joe Walsh (Rocky Mt. Way) and Peter Frampton (Do you feel, like I do) got the new device (created in 1971 in a workshop) This year, 1975, was when it was introduced to the general public. The same tech went on to create "Pitch Correct" in 1979 (allowed singers who can't carry a tune in a bucket, like all the new models and dancers who wanted to sing around this time, to sing however in to a microphone, and the tones coming out of the speaker would be shifted to match the key of the band. ) Later, autotune (1996) replaced that, allowing even more talentless "artists" to cheat and feign real abilities. I liked it best back in 75 when it was this.

That's a real flying pig(blow up ) and apparently it broke free at one point and just flew along ,up ,up and away ....gotta love it :) OINK !

They had to superimpose the pig on the album cover. When they did the shoot the strings broke on the real pig broke and it flew off. Airline pilots reported a flying pig and they were apparently put on the breathalyser when they landed
I think this is the first PF song that Gilmour used a 'Talk Box', a device that combines the human voice and the guitar notes into strange, almost ominous sounds. Peter Frampton also used a Talk Box on his live 1976, "Frampton Comes Alive" album.
I just today noticed the "Grand Funk Live Album" poster behind you, haha, reminds me of the time I saw them, ("Grand Funk Railroad" 70's Rock band), at their iconic Shea Stadium Concert in 1971, I was only 15 years old so my really cool brother-in-law, who knew I was a GFR, bought tickets and took me to the show.

The grimy, blotched sound is part of the purpose - those keyboards, guitar and drums are meant to sound a bit ugly, swampish...almost crude. Roger's scornful, nonchalant voice too...
Over the last eight years Roger has been dedicating the song to Donald Trump at concerts (there's a great live video of it from Mexico City in the summer of 2016), and I completely agree about that. Trump does embody so much of what the lyrics are about, this song about gluttony, deceit, abuse, hypocrisy and violence.
One of my favourite Floyd sings. Funky, bluesy and gritty. Such an underrated album. Dare I say it, I prefer Animals to DSOTM. Really like your analysis. Enjoying your videos

The building pictured on the cover of the "Animals" album is the Battersea Power Station in London, England, Floyd's home town. Saw Pink Floyd on their Division Bell tour, and found it to be a very sterile, cold environment. The attitude from the stage was, just sit there and be entertained by us. Do not attempt to interact with the band in any way, and leave when it is over. The band did not address the audience in any way, and the only time there was a reaction from the crowd, was when the laser show went on, or some other "special effect", no true musical highlights. I could have been home listening to a CD, no improvisation or deviation from the album versions. It was all played perfectly, of course, but a little fun may have been in order.
Yep, the building is the power station allright - I've seen it myself from a distance on a bus ride in London back in the day. Their home town was Cambridge though, that's where they all came from, grew up and where they launched the band.

The pig got loose when they were taking that cover shot. It flew across the country, in air traffic, which significantly added to PFs notoriety.

I don't remember if it was brought up in the dogs video but this album is based off of the book animal farm, which when I was in high school in the late '90s was required reading but now that I have kids myself I've learned that it is now on the banned books list.

No wonder Waters was led to think he WAS the band. He wrote the song, he sang it. Gilmour played the bass for him fcol. Musically, it was Gilmour all the way. But they all butlered to Waters’ songwriting.
That was pretty much the case from saucerful to the wall. Waters is arrogant, quite narcissistic but he is right.
It's a shame the knives came out.

16:15 true, that. Animals was their fu album. The Wall was more personal to Waters and therefor less of an affront to the world as a whole, I think. Animals was more generic, more public. They got bad press over the whole cynical vibe of it.

Great reaction Lee! This whole album is fire - and yes, it's dark! Waters had a fair deal to say about society here - and this song was no exception! (even going so far as to call someone out by name - conservative & censorship activist Mary Whitehouse!)
Can't wait for Sheep - but I highly suggest having the lyrics for that one! (especially for one part that is hard to make out, but essential to the understanding of the track!)

David Gilmour is the one who's playing a fretted bass in this song! The pig sounds you're hearing are being made by Gilmore using a heil talk box. I'm not sure they'll ever be a more complex group than these guys especially considering the sounds they created with 1970s technology!!
