Leukemia is linked to ionizing radiation, while lymphoma is less strongly linked to ionizing radiation. Lymphoma develops from mature cells, whereas leukemia develops from rapidly dividing cells in the bone marrow. Ionizing radiation is more likely to cause cancer in rapidly dividing cells because, for division to occur, DNA replication must happen. During DNA replication, the two strands of DNA separate, exposing the strands and making the DNA more vulnerable to damage. How can I remember that lymphoma develops from mature cells while leukemia develops from rapidly dividing cells in the bone marrow? Leukemia ends with the suffix "-emia," meaning blood, which highlights the fact that cancer cells are present in the bloodstream. Therefore, leukemia is considered more aggressive than lymphoma, as rapidly dividing cells are more prone to form aggressive tumors.
