  • One of my most successful methods to catch stream trout in recent years has been switching from more traditional “hardware” to small jigs and plastic swimbaits. During certain conditions they can be absolutely deadly. Watch this video to find out the details on how, and when, I use these baits.

    Great video! Only ever used Mepps spinners and night crawlers for trout. Going to have to give the plastics you showed a try!

    Going out trout fishing for the first time in years here in the morning! I haven’t forgot all the tactics though! My bag is packed with panther Martin and mepp spinners. The other box is holding little jig hooks and mr.twister style baits! Haha similar to your video here.!!
    Wish me luck!

    Great video and I love my triumph I have the 7’ but great rod and paired it with a President reel. Almost like more than my yampa river favorite rod setup.

      I like 1/16 oz jig with a size 6 hook for most applications.

    Have you ever heard of the mealie master? If so what are your thoughts. I’m going to try his style on the driftless region NW Iowa. I’m spooled up with 2# fluorocarbon and only need the meal worms now. Wish me luck.

    What weight jig do your recommend?

    • @calebwistad
      @calebwistad  2 роки тому

      I usually fish a 1/32 or 11/6. I’ll go 1/8 if I’m fishing heavier current or want to burn it a little faster.

      @@calebwistad Yes, I know they are very water temp sensitive to get the females moving. Any tips?

      Water is definitely still cold. I will be down on the Mississippi on Friday and our plan is to pitch jigs and plastics. We use a very slow 6” to 12” hop off bottom and just slip down through the current a little more with each hop. It’s a very slow presentation until the water hits the mid to upper 40s. Then you can start using some vibrating baits an jigging more aggressively.

      I prefer the 2” because they have a little better action. I would buy some 1/32 oz and some 1 1/6 oz jig heads.

      Maybe some 1/4 oz too if you fish deep weed lines deeper than 6’

      Hey man! The triumph is a great rod. For all-around trout and bluegill fishing I’d go 6lb. You can always tie on a lighter leader but you can’t go heavier. My best colors of the B-Vibe are gold, black, purple and red/black. As far as jig heads, I’m usually going to stick with black for 90% of my fishing but will use chartreuse or white now and then. Size totally depends on how deep I’m fishing. 1/32 and 11/6 oz or pretty standard though.

    You flippin' 1/8oz on those jigs?

    • @calebwistad
      @calebwistad  2 роки тому +2

      Actually typically 1/16 or even 1/32 oz. I only go 1/8 in deeper, slower water or if I want to burn them fast.
