I have no idea how but my friend discovered this and played it at a party yesterday. I've never seen people going nuts as much from a song that nobody had ever heard of before as they did yesterday.

Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
Think of all the great things we would do
Those were the days, my friend
    We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
    We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way
La ra ra ra la la
La ra ra ra la la
La ra ra ra la ra ra ra ra ra
Then the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
If by chance I'd see you in the tavern
We'd smile at one another and we'd say
Those were the days, my friend
    We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
    We'd fight and never lose
    Those were the days
Oh, yes, those were the days
La ra ra ra la la...
Just tonight I stood before the tavern
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely woman really me?
Those were the days, my friend
    We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
    We'd fight and never lose
    Those were the days
Oh, yes, those were the days
La ra ra ra la la...
Through the door there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh, my friend, we're older but no wiser
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same...
Those were the days, my friend
    We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
    We'd fight and never lose
    Those were the days
Oh, yes, those were the days
La ra ra ra la la...

credited to Gene Raskin, who put English lyrics to the Russian gypsy song "Dorogoi dlinnoyu" ("Дорогой длинною", lit. "By the long road"), written by Boris Fomin (1900-1948) with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevskii. It deals with reminiscence upon youth and romantic idealism. The first known recording of the song was by Alexander Vertinsky in the 1920s. The song is best remembered for Mary Hopkin's 1968 recording, which was a top-ten hit in both the U.S. and the U.K.

@Murkula86 The musical quotation refers to the "At the Manchzuria Hills" item. The song was originally composed by Ilya Shatrov in 1906 and dedicated to his war friends fallen at the Russo-Japan War of 1905. Shatrov was the conductor of the military band and happened to be surrounded by the enemy with other troops. As the story goes, he made his band play to initiate the counter attack. Him and six more soldiers managed to break through.

These guys REALLY need to get together with Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies and put out an album. It'd bring fans of two different yet similar bands together and the album/concert would be awesome I think :)

as far as I know, originally this is a Gregorian gypsy song, I also heard it in a Gregorian(then Soviet Union) film with a gypsy choir, in Russian. I wish someone find this song it and puts it on ut. Listening to that was an experience.

. The music was nicked by the composer of the English Lyrics for Mary Hopkin's song Those were the days.

Absolutely yes! The previous name of this great band was "Sleepy Sleepers". Thay came from Lahti, a middle-sized Finnish town and are now known universally. They have also presented some songs on in the centre of Helsinki with the soviet Red Army Choir.
