Guardsmen had one of the all time best and most precise rifle lines back in the day.

great series, of the best shows of the 70's was the 79 Boston Crusaders. 25 man hornline that made 5 DCI finals except for nationals. one amazing drill and fantastic hornline, you need to find a video of them. and you will hear. Brass Section that featured only 25 Brass somehow coming in 12th place in G.E. Brass in the 1979 DCI prelims. In other words with only 11 Soprano's, 4 Mellophone's, 8 Baritone's and 2 Contrabass the '79 Crusader's Brass section made the D.C.I. finals in GE Brass. The question is.....was that the most amazing score the '79 Crusader's achieved that year? Well, it's arguable that our M&M execution or visual scores were even more remarkable and remarkable over the course of the entire year. Why? because over the course of that season we beat every Corps in the country in M&M execution save 4. Which 4 were we not able to beat? Phantom, who took high execution that year, the Blue Devils and Santa Clara Vanguard both of whom we did not compete against until the D.C.I. Prelims, and Spirit of Atlanta whom we were only .03 behind at the D.C.I. Midwest. We actually took top M&M execution at the CYO Nationals that year a show that was staged just one week before the D.C.I. finals. In that show we came in over Madison, 27th, Cavi's, Bridgemen, North Star and Freelancer's which were all Corps who were twice our size. One judge gave us a 19.1 and the other gave us a 19.3. Over the course of that year we beat Madison, 27th, Cavi's, Bridgemen, North Star, Freelancer's, Crossmen, Blue Star, Guardsmen (7th place that year) and Trooper's (12th place that year). Those Corps range in placement from 5th to 14th place in the D.C.I. Prelims and again, they were all twice our size.

Suggestion, you should purchase the Drum Corps history book volume 1 and 2. Years ago between the United States and Canada there were approximately 7,000 Real Drum and bugle Corp, they all were not competitive units but many many were. Most of those organizations had sponsors that were local such as American Legion VFW, and Catholic churches. The local community would support the drum and bugle Corp, by watching them when they had local parades and also by going to the local competitions oh, by the way there were many in most regions a single weekend you might have four or five competitions to choose from. In my opinion DCI is the reason for the demise of what was one of the great youth activities in the United States today. They priced most of the drum and bugle course out of business due to the demands to travel and put various instruments Pits on the field. Plus the dues today are several thousand dollars compared to Old School, membership dues were anywhere from $10 to maybe $20 per year, and you didn't have the money for that, the organization would pay it for you. Most kids were excited to bring along such an organization, and they work hard, most of them will not privileged like today. Everybody was welcome and you learned, your bugle or drum as you progress with experience. From a spectator point of view drum and bugle Corps competition ranked number four in the country, ahead of baseball. Today at DCI finals you lucky to get 20,000, most vocal competitions with have twenty-five to thirty thousand. What does that tell you? It's no longer about the youth in our great country, these management people, a concerned about themselves salaries, egos, self-promotion, nothing to do with promoting the activity. DCI, also never encourage kids to go onto a senior drum and bugle Corps. The kids at what age out with boo hoo and cry or I can't do this anymore this is my last competition oh, it makes me want to throw up to be honest with you. Also some of your comments, are condescending. Today is June 4th 2022.
We no longer have real drum and bugle Corps, today it is a marching band competition superimposed on the three ring circus.

Ken Kolbold, our corps founder, and DCI used those mics for recording the shows for sale purposes

The mikes on the sideline weren't part of the corps' sound system. Those were there for recording.

You are 100% correct for recording purposes only. Today that use them so you can hear the piano playing the violins the flutes trombones, because they are a marching band.
