Finals 1980... I was marching with a much smaller corp who had competed at 8am. Turns out that was a blessing in disguise as the heat in Birmingham, Ala in August is brutal. We had been on first tour with the Bridgemen so I was thoroughly familiar with their show. I knew the crowd was going to go apesh^t when it got to the Civil War Suite part of the show. The roar of the crowd when they broke into those first few bars of Dixie was deafening. I thought for sure the stands were gonna come down around my ears. Oh how I miss that part of my life. What I wouldn't give to go back and do it all over again. Thanks so much for sharing this and making this old lady happy!!

The Bridgemen were ALOT of fun to watch.
They made it appear that everything was on the fly when in reality, they had so much talent that it took incredible practice to make a truly difficult show look easy

So fun to hear a younger generationer’s perspective. A couple of notes...”The Bird” was female, and yes the costumes/unis were very hot. Yes the Bridgemen were about fun and entertainment, but they worked HARD. High drums that year and they came in 3rd at championships. The civil war ending was cool in that the two opposing circles of horns went back and forth in the “doo dah” section, and the American flag at the end had a peace sign on it (that you couldn’t see in this video) representing unity. Fun fun show to watch!

The South "winning" the Civil War didn't resonate with the audience quite the same in Allentown as it did in Birmingham...

@@tomshea8382 The goal was for Birmingham and I vividly remember the ovation of the crowd after the first 7 notes, it was hard to hear the next 7! Then of course there was the football play leaving the field!

      GREAT CORP.
I FIRST SAW THEM IN NEW YORK IN 1979 WHICH WAS THE FIRST TIME I WENT TO A DCI EVENT.
I JOINED THE BLACKWATCH THE NEXT DAY AND WON 3 DCI CLASS A TITLES AS A SOLOIST. THE COLOR GUARD WAS AMAZING!!! WHAT UP REUBEN (MELEPHONE SOLOIST)

I WAS THERE IN THE STANDS FOR THE MOST ENTERTAINING CORP IN DCI HISTORY IN MY OPINION. THEY DIDN'T CARE ABOUT SCORING THEY JUST WANTED TO ENTERTAIN.
MY CORP (THE BLACKWATCH, WILLINGBORO NEW JERSEY IN WHICH I WAS A SOLOIST IN SEND IN THE CLOWNS) WON THE CLASS A TITLE THAT YEAR

Actually presenting the colors was not a tradition at that time. I am not sure when the requirement ended but it was early DCI that ended it. The Bridgemen are doing it because of the music they are playing. Totally appropriate. !980 Bridgeman - a total gas! I love his show and I loved drum corps back then, 70s into the 80s wow!

Great show. You’re right about the audio. Great horn line, though shy on the contras at 6.
10 snares, which is pretty unusual. Must have had some talent in ‘80. And yes, just checked the finals caption awards for 1980, and Bridgemen won high drums. 3rd place finals finish with a score of 90.05. Blue Devils, first, 27th, Second. Spirit, fourth.

1980 DCI was in Birmingham, Alabama. Bridgemen won high drums that year, I'm pretty sure. We were on tour with them a bit towards the end of the season. We always tried to catch them--that In The Stone arrangement really hit hard. And yeah, the audio quality of the VHS from broadcast was really poor. It's not a fair representation of what those hornlines sounded like, but sadly it's all we have.

I see your Zia. Are you from NM? Manzano performed In the Stone in, I think 1983. That's how I found your show. I was reminiscing. I miss the days of a marching drum line, and an orderly, choreographed entrance to the field.

Next to the birth of my son, this experience was incredibly special. I will always consider this to be a crowning achievement in my life. Thanks again for the love and the highlight all these years later! As we say in the Bridgemen...Keep hypin!
