Great Video as always Matt, Your channel is very underrated. I share your passion for mineral-driven Riesling. Are only those 2 wines listed in the description available in the US?
Thanks Brian, I do hope it takes off soon (I've been at it for over six years). They are all available in the USA, I just had links to those two from my affiliate partner wine.com which has great prices.
After all my years working wine retail, nothing triggers me more than the typical conversations around riesling. As one of my all time favorite varieties, I dont think any other grape is so profoundly misunderstood as this one. Anytime the topic of riesling comes up among non-wine people my mind automatically goes on the defensive cuz I always know I am gunna have to do some serious mis-information combating hahah, great vid as always!
Ahhhhhh thanks... I can just imagine your spider sense tingling when Riesling comes up. Riesling will probably never get super popular, it's too sharp but it's fine for me and other wine nerds like you!
I had some pretty amazing Rieslings from Rheinhessen lately: Feth-Wehrhof Riesling trocken 2016 Arno Göhring: Frauenberg 2017 I also like Eva Fricke from the Rheingau. Her Schlossberg is really good.
Alsace is definitely a great region for Reisling, I am a bit surprised it wasn’t mentioned. Zind-Humbrecht is my favorite there but also Trimbach and Domaine Weinbach, all having wines in all price/quality categories. Zind-Humbrecht I had wines both of newer vintages as well as some over 20 years old (and in between) and stored quality Riesling is just amazing. I had an Australian Riesling, Richmond Grove Waterwale from 1998, which might be hard to come by but if you do I can recommend it highly as it has that great acidity still but also the warmer climate petrol flavor on it.
Totally agree about Humbrecht. A superb wine maker with a purposeful and individual vision based on organic production. A great wine maker and a Master of Wine too.
Thank you so much as this presentation was great especially for my interest in Riesling Wines! I really enjoyed the manner of interpretation of the German Whites!
Riesling... an all-time favorite :) I use to sell a lot when I lived in Norway, working had a head sommelier! Got plenty of big time favorites there.... You should try Staffelter Hof
I was more into viognier but I find it expensive to get a really good one (except some viogniers from Chile, I have to pay at least 25$ if not 35$ CAD). You're right... this is actually something I'm not drinking, I always thought Germany was not a really great place for wine. Next white I'm gonna buy! Thanks for the food pairing tips too!
@@drmatthewhorkey Good to know, I had the reflex to turn towards Rhone Valley, but though I could find good Syrah at low price, I can't say the same thing for Viognier.
The first wines were made by Celtic tribes in the Mosel region. It dates back like over 2500 years ago. Later the Romans came and started with the cultivation. Our lands got some experience in winemaking.
I have a lot of Riesling Spätlese in my cellar, Willi Haag, Dr. Loosen, Kartäuserhofberg, Dönnhoff and many more. They are all great, so I cannot tell you which I prefer. But I definitely have to try the Trocken ones!
I love Riesling. My favourite producers are: A. Christmann, Weingut Wolf (both Pfalz) and Van Volxem (Saar). They pair really incredibly well with food and actually with those dishes I also love sparkling Riesling.
Ir’s ok, some people just don’t like Rieslinf. I’m not as well versed in Aussie Rieslings but have had some good ones from Grosset and affordable ones from Dandelion Vineyards
It's hard to find high quality Riesling in my state. Von Winning is probably one of the few that has some real quality and available in my area. But there's decent Riesling around, mostly Mosel but finally managed to find some decent Reinhessen and Pfalz as well.
@@drmatthewhorkey Arkansas. I know a lot of states have restrictive laws. But just frustrating only having several wine distributors. With one of those being very big. But also hard to work with. They don't listen to someone like me. I'm supposed to drink whatever they offer.
@@drmatthewhorkey Northwest Arkansas, which has more attention to wine compared to the rest of the state. But the whole state has the same wine distributors. I'm not just a wine fan, but I am also in wine sales. So it affects my work a lot too.
@@drmatthewhorkey And will throw this in there as well. Came across your channel here not long ago. Just by chance and have really enjoyed your videos. There's a huge world if wine out there. So always great to learn more and to see your enthusiasm.
Austrian Riesling still my bench mark for me. It was the heroine of wine for me, ill find it really hard to find another like that again. We have a small amount of Riesling here in NZ but nothing like the European wines 👌
I keep getting suggested these great videos from your back catalogue. Riesling is probably my favorite varietal. Check out anything from Von Winning in Pfaltz. Also for value check out Julian Haart's "1000 L" (Mosel). For 25 bucks I think its a great value.
@@drmatthewhorkey nice! My brother lives near by the winery. If you get a chance, they have a bike day along the Winestrasse in Pfaltz. It's about as much fun as you can possibly have in wine country. Riding a bike with thousands of other people from village to village. Can get a little silly near the end of the day!
Don't bother with fancy confusing german labels just look at its alcohol level the higher the alcohol, the lower the sugar. Too easy. Dry is around 12% plus. Sweet is a round 6 0r 8%.

Alsace is fantastic indeed, I didn’t have any examples on hand

Just started binge watching your channel - you are doing awesome. I'm also a fan of Wineking and C. Baum. Keep at it - Nick, winelover from SE Asia

Wow, thanks so much for stopping by. Ohhhh wow, so rare to hear from a Viognier nut. I hope your German experience goes well.
@@drmatthewhorkey I like aromatic wines, whether they're whites or reds. There are many insipid Viognier too, ah ah!
I agree, too bad you aren't in the USA, there are some lovely Viogniers coming from Santa Barbara in the 20 and under range.

Hirsch from Kamptal is my favorite Riesling from Austria. You should try it!
I have! Beautiful wine

I'm a big fan of some sparkling Rieslings too! Good choices on producers
I had Riesling from Luxemburg (Mosel Luxemburg)....I really enjoyed the wine
Ohhhh nice, I haven't had any from Luxembourg yet!
I absolutely loathe this wine. Please can you suggest one from Australia that will help me come to appreciate this white?

I’m already green with envy… being able to be in the Pfalz with all that Riesling all the time!

It is a good general measure of sweetness although I have seen sweet ones coming in at 12% too
👍🏻👍🏻
😎🙏
I'll have to disagree, mostly because it's way too sweet. For those who love dry white wines, muscadet is a great "unknown" varietal.
Most Riesling produced in Germany and Austria is actually bonnnnne dry. I do like Muscadet too although the variety in that wine is Melon de Bourgogne
You are flogging a dead horse Matt. 🤣🤣
People will not buy the stuff.
hhahahahah yes most don't!
