A ride back in time in Galena, Illinois

- When it comes to cycling destinations, the midwest of the United States is not often at the forefront of a cyclist’s mind. Still, a few small towns connected in a region known as the “Driftless Area” are starting to sway where riders choose to spend their time on the bike.
Located in the furthest-northwest county of Illinois, Galena’s 19th-century buildings seem to be preserved in a time long since passed. Riding through the steel flood gates on Main Street, it takes little imagination to visualize the ghosts of the past on a rainy Tuesday evening.
Well this is a charming series thank you very much and yes there is some thing very endearing about these routes and byways that take folks back and away From the ever so much of most of our every day lives
Awesome feature 💯 More, please 😎
The girl has such a captivating smile.
Great video, this is just up the road from me, now I'm going to have to go check it out
Was planning a Chicago to Mississippi River trip and I might switch it from Savanna to Galena. I don't know if I've ever been to Galena before, I've been to Savanna plenty of times. This was nice, thanks!
Gotta make it over to Jo Daviess County. We have some of the best routes in the state.
Nice video, makes me curious about a trip to Galena.
It's a trip to Europe without the cost, fantastic restaurants, a very beautiful city , you will love it. Been there many times,
@@wadeunderhile7977 Yes, Wade!
Wade is correct. Come visit us, you won't be disappointed.
My recollection of riding in the Midwest was the highway overpasses was where you got any sort of elevation- had no idea there were hills in Galena (stuck too close the Chicago & its suburbs I guess) You’re making me want to back to Illinois with my bike! Nicely done video!
Come back. Visit us!
@@VisitGalena I DEFINITELY WILL! I’m way overdue to visit my H2O color instructor, Carl Johnson’s gallery!
Beautiful rides well summarized, thanks! Would it kill you to slap on a rear mudguard with some zipties or something? I love my Mudhuggers!
Cool place. Not somewhere i would have ever thought about going to ride, but those roads look great. I'm not a civil war expert, but isn't this the Galena where Grant lived after the civil war? (thank you Craig Finn).
I believe so.
Yeah it is
Yep great trip you will love it, great restaurants
The town gave him the house. He spent very little time there. His family was there for a little bit.
Anyway to share the gps routes?
I’d like to have that as well.

Planning a driftless cycling holiday this summer. Am planning to pick 2-3 base locations and do 3-4 rides from each base. So far I’m definitely doing Lacrosse, WI, but now think I might add Galena as a second base location. Is there a collection of gravel loops available (like the ones you guys rode)? 100k is my sweet spot for ride length. Thanks.
Would love to see maps! We've done the trail from Galena to Chestnut! Recommend it highly!
We hit that trail this summer. It was awesome.
They have a root beer store lol.
Those roads look doable on slicks, no?
you really needed fenders tho would have been so much more comfy
Oh crap! You exposed Galena for the beautiful place it is. Shhhhh Keep it quiet.
