- The cosmic rhapsodies of Terrence Malick are spoken of with a hushed reverence. Each of these rarefied masterpieces ruminates profoundly on the connection between humanity and the natural world, seeking out transcendence in the landscapes of America’s past. This trio of touchstone works-his sublime lovers-on-the-run debut BADLANDS, golden-hour reverie DAYS OF HEAVEN, and mesmerizing historical epic THE NEW WORLD-are to be savored for their senses-ravishing imagery and rich philosophical resonance.

'Badlands'. One of the finest films I've ever seen.
A fine film about killing others due to having too much time on your hands.
I agree, Roger. So many of its images and lines of dialogue are now deep in my bones.
The chad natural light vs. the virgin blue & orange colour grade
Malick the master! The golden hour shots in Days of Heaven are sublime.
Days of Heaven is a beautiful masterpiece. His first few works are easily some of his best
I still seek the rumored 7 hour cut of The Thin Red Line with all the actors they filmed and left out.
it was really an assembled cut of the film. it was never meant to be the final version.
@@thevoid99 yes I know. I have seen the Apocalypse Now assembly cut and my other goal is the Thin Red Line. If it even exists. It's only rumors...
I've always heard five-hour rather than seven. But I'd see it, whatever length, if the footage still existed and could be put into finished form. It would be wild, more than 20 years later, to see that performance from Adrien Brody that people were saying in advance was going to make him a star. Of course he's in the film (and good in his reaction shots), but very briefly.
thevoid99 think of it as DLC for a game. It's not necessary to the main experience but regardless having more of it wouldn't tarnish the experience at all.
what about the long cut of Apocalypse Now
Absolutely adore his movies. Always easy to watch & certainly easy on the eye, Days Of Heaven is in my top five films of all-time & has some of the most beautiful photography I've ever seen. Truly a visual masterpiece.
Mother, where do you live? In the sky? The clouds? The sea? Show me your face. Give me a sign. We rise... we rise. Afraid of myself. A god, he seems to me. What else is life but being near you? Do they suspect? Oh, to be given to you. You to me. I will be faithful to you. True. Two no more. One. One. I am... I am.
One of most transcendent scenes in a long list of them in malick's movies
To me, the greatest American filmmaker, almost all films are masterpieces. A Hidden Life was just something else, probably my favorite cinema experience thus far.
yah...i dont know about almost all. Certainly though A Hidden Life hit the mark. It might the best of all his films. However, Song to Song, Night of Cups and To the Wonder are just plain bad. The are almost unwatchable. I'm sorry like I saw the trailer for The Thin Red line in a theatre when I was 17 and was in love forever. But........Some times when you're in love you have endure some horrible shit.
This music is giving me its such a beautiful day memories.
Wagner - Prelude, Das Rheingold
i love this movie so much
The new world soundtrack
I loved "The New World" Extended Cut. The movie is like watching heaven from afar
I love you! Terrence is my favorite director and my biggest influence
I felt the same way for decades, but have just not connected with his more recent films. But I'm still a fan.
How often does a commercial move you to tears?
Tree of Life trailer did ;p
All 3 absolute masterpieces.
I wish it was more than three!!!
agreed, so far. the films of his i need to see are "song to song" (which i have on dvd), "voyage of time", and "a hidden life" (which i hope returns to hbo).
@@thevoid99 yeah they all have their merits. Song to Song I like, though it’s not nearly on the level as his other films. I would love to see the Channel get I though, along with the rest.
He should recut Song to Song into a miniseries for Netflix, or something. He shot so much footage and only used two hours of it. It might be a revelation.
@@thevoid99 A HIDDEN LIFE has quickly become my new favorite of his or at least my favorite of his 21st Century films.
@@simonboccanegra3811 I agree. Didn’t get much out of that film. The structure needed a lot of work. Malick got lost In his sense of ambition. Pretty to look at, but no center to grab onto.
Those last 10 minutes of The New World are just perfection...
Agreed. One of my favourite ever endings. Like a religious experience.
I feel the same way about the first 10 minutes!
This convinced me to finally sign up for the channel
His movies feel like 3-hour long visual meditations. The score and cinematography are my favorite things about his movies (especially when he works with Lubezki and natural lighting).
This preview gives me the tinglies, I can’t wait to watch these!
What a fantastic promo
Damn, that’s some nice cinematography
His artistic vision is beyond masterful. The cinematography and musical scores in his movies are breathtaking.
Malick changed how I looked at film.
Yo Criterion, y'all need to bring in Werckmeister Harmonies by Béla Tarr at some point.
Three great movies! Days of Heaven is my favorite, a true masterpiece!
Those static movements. He’s a poet, he’s the cinema itself.
Mother, where do you live? In the sky? The clouds? the sea? Give me a sign. We rise. We rise. What else is life by being near you, to be given to you, each of me, I will be faithful to you, true, two no more, one! one! I am! I am!
thank you Criterion!!!
you're a hero to every cinephile such as myself
I'm relatively new to the Malick obsession, and man was this just an awesome example as to why I love his work so damn much
so excited for this. I always thought Malick was British. Days of Heaven is stunning. Malick is a favorite of mine.
I didn’t enjoy some of his newer films but I recently saw a hidden life and wow what a moving and powerful film. I highly recommend people check that out.
TODAS las peliculas del Maestro tienen que estar Criterionizadas!
Badlands is gorgeous
An all-time great director.
The New World is his best imo!!
His best and the best.
"Voyage of Time". Please get on it ASAP and fix what Broad Green clearly couldn't.
So wonderful films
There are not only 3 to watch by him. All his films are stunning and request your attention!I can't also understand ppl complaining about his last films they are also real piece of art.
The common complaint from the last few movies, Hidden Life not included here, is that it’s the same note being played over and over. I would tend to agree. They are so dreamy that one can’t grab onto anything.
It is what I love about his works. They provide something different...thus unpopular...but still needed.
One of the fears with Disney taking over everything, theaters losing business and rental places shutting down is Different is stayed away from as Money becomes the only goal.
Gorgeous
1.The Tree Of Life
2.Badlands
3.The Thin Red Line
4.Days Of Heaven
5.Knight Of Cups
6.The New World
7.Song To Song
8.To The Wonder
9.A Hidden Life
All 3 versions of "The New World" are on the Channel.
There are 3 versions? I did not know that. I gotta look it up.
@@pablopaul8539 I’ve seen the 135-minute theatrical cut in 35mm in late 2019, so it’s one down and two to go for me. Saving the extended cut for last.
@@pablopaul8539 Yes. There's the 2.5-hour world-premiere version released at the end of 2005 for awards consideration, a version shortened by 15 minutes for the wide release, and the extended version (nearly three hours) that came out on video a few years later. The longest one is the best, IMO, and it's clearly the one Criterion gave the most attention for their Blu-ray set.
When the fuck is your streaming service coming to europe? I’m holdin’ my breath over here, that library of yours looks fantastic
Wagner's "beginning" is very suitable as a back-drop!
Das Rheingold, also used in Nosferatu
Please tell me there will be a Region B-release!
1. Badlands
2. The Thin Red Line
3. Days of Heaven
4. The New World
5. The Tree of Life
Gosh! These are amazing movies. Can someone suggest me similar movie (language no bar)
The Spirit of the Beehive and The South by the Spanish director Victor Erice
A Hidden Life when??
Has the gift a certain ephemera like postcards of heaven and hell
Yeas
Rank these movies!! For me its New World> Badlands > Days of Heaven
Mine would be the reverse, but I consider all of his first five to be masterpieces.
(Days of Heaven > The Thin Red Line > The Tree of Life > Badlands > The New World > A Hidden Life > To the Wonder > Song to Song > Knight of Cups)
personal, subjective ranking:
1. Days of Heaven
2. The New World
3. The Thin Red Line
4. Badlands
5. Tree of Life
6-9. the rest
What's the name of the music?
Wagner vorspiel
Criterion- what are the chances of getting any Malick films released in 4k? Region B...
Or even blu ray... I've only seen Badlands.
@@benoakes01 Tree of Life is also available on Criterion in Region B, and The New World is coming soon (14 December). His other movies are on blu-ray over here, just not on Criterion (yet)
What's the music here? It sounds more than halfway like Wagner's prelude to Rheingold but I'm not sure
I thought so too but but it doesn't exactly sound like the entry to Valhalla
Wait nvm I think it is
music.ua-cam.com/video/B0l6xfQpgt0/v-deo.html&feature=share
It is, it was used in the wonderful beginning of the New World
@@jethro994 Thank you! Time to finally pop in my gathering-dust copy of the Blu
What's the music?
Vorspiel by Richard Wagner
Where is the music from?
The beginning of Wagner's Das Rheingold (as heard in The New World).
@@simonboccanegra3811 thanks 🤗😄
Is that Jim Carrey at 1:04 ?
This is Sam Shepard in Days Of Heaven
✌️
As great as these three films are his two masterpieces, I think, are Thin Red Line and Tree of Life.
now make a godard boxset :)
Criterion should release a box ser for Badlands to ToL since they already own them*and nobody cares about post-ToL Malick)
I would ask that you watch A HIDDEN LIFE and then come back and reedit your comment. Trust me.
@@mclare71 love Hidden Life, definitely good Malick
@@sudevsen It took my breath away and I wept inconsolably.
I really hate the philosophy of weed making movies better. But in the case of Malick, there's no other way tbh...
The one and only! Which of these things does not belong here? Which of these thing is not the same? Just kidding maybe The New World deserves a re-watch.
His first two films are masterpieces. The New World is a regrettable misstep...
I certainly could care less about 2min trailers. I WOULD however love and appreciate it enormously if someone at Criterion saw fit to regularly post UA-cams of full length films from its fantastic collection. Dealer’s choice.
So you want Criterion to post up full length movies and risk piracy etc. Then there wouldn't be a collection either and they would probably go out of business. What a stupid comment 🙄🤦♀️
@@EmlynBoyle I have absolutely zero knowledge about copyright infringement or any other such nonsense. I regret the loss of Criterion Collection since it was available for free on TCM (or wherever, I forget) and would like to see some of the films again. You work for Criterion, Emily?
