Counterstrategies are complex but can be simplified when done well. What character do you feel is hardest to counterstrategize for? I'd say Young Link is up there... the character has so many ways of playing the game, that you can almost never properly counter what he's doing.
@@RamsesEsports i feel like sometimes passive and very safe play can make it harder for sheik sometimes (speaking as a sheik player) cause it gives less opportunities to find confirms but maybe thats just me being bad against passive play. But if she gets a lead that strategy evaporates
Excellent video. The only other element in this is being present/aware enough to recognize you need to step through the RPS, and not just spam the most rewarding part of the RPS. That's the part I'm trying to get better at right now!
Such an amazing & valuable analysis. I've been grinding several of your videos lately while compiling a absolute fuck ton of Smash notes between competitive & fundies stuff w/ Mario MU vods for notes & your content, analysis, expertise & breakdowns are an absolute gold mine.
Your videos are coming in really handy. I've been recently trying to figure all this stuff out on my own, wondering how to fix it or have it all make sense. Your videos really break this stuff down and help me understand how a lot of stuff works. Much better than just playing until I have it figured out. I did have someone explain a lot of stuff to me, but you break down things a whole lot further. A lot of your videos explain stuff I just recently started thinking about since I realized I wasn't a beginner anymore.
In my opinion, one of your best videos so far. Made me realize that I could look at a matchup more on a strategic level, than on the level of individual moves interacting. Could you make a short video explaining what exactly a gimmick is when seen through the framework you outline in this video? Understanding that might help people to not get frustrated by them. Best regards
This is one of the best videos relating to analysis of smash on a "mental approach" level I've ever seen. This gives me more insight to how the best players think about this game than anything I've seen/ EDIT AFTER FULLY WATCHING: Still holds, I think I had a basic grasp of fundamentals and base level player adaptation and reading, but I think I struggled to have matchup focused adaptation, but this video illustrates how to approach the game in a matchup by matchup way which I think is much more effective. That's what I got out of it
Amazing topic! The way you analize the information, weaknesses/strenghts and explanations is remarkable. This is truly a good way to create your own way to respond against enemy strategies. I wonder, since I compete too, is it possible for any character to design a good strategy against specific hard matchups? or sometimes you're just doomed?. I say this because I main Little Mac and I frequently face platform camping. I've been getting better at dealing with that strategy, but I feel I could create so much more... and I want to apply this video to design a proper counterplay. Any tips to create my own? I know characters are meant to have weaknesses and strenghts, some of them more polarized than others, but as far as I know as a competitor, everything has counterplay and opportunity costs, so there must be something to improve or discover. Amazing video brother, extremely professional, well explained and gives me motivation to invest more time in strategy/counter strategy. Thank you for your high quality content.
First of all, what the heck, this comment is so kind 😭 Thank you so much!! As for your Mac question - it's hard. I think for Mac, there's just a hard limit to how far you can push anti platform camp counterplay. It's like turning a 1/10 situation into a 4/10 situation - it's better, but still limited. I'd say push it as close to even as you can, but if you're gonna be playing bad situations in neutral, sometimes the solution is to instead optimize elsewhere (advantage, disadvantage, psychologically, etc).
Love that you used Marth beating up Steve in the thumbnail. Perhaps there are some that are aware of the sell out Lucina and aren't blindsiding Steve being absolutely broken... I'd love to debate anyone that thinks Steve isn't broken. Here are my initial takes, right? He's got way too many ways to mix up. Offstage: He can reset his jumps offstage by standing on block and repeating that for who knows how long. He can cancel atks or grabs on blocks the tick away in a fairly guestimated time without specific knowledge on the timing. He can drop suicide with Anvil grab. He can interchange mine carting (which is already inconsistent to punish because of it's huge hitbox with insane knockback for a spammable, and it's a projective that's also a grab essentially) with his up-b glide (there was a reason why gliding got taken out of brawl... because you can avoid being gimped/stall the ledgeguard) Onstage: Building just a one block wall can stall just about every character to net your mining positive one resource. There is no risk in building walls onstage. You will always have resources if you keep mixing up to reset neutral. The chase to stop this is so inconsistent. He can drop anvil on you whether that be raw high or s-hop with or without a block to stall the drop time. Mine cart is inconsistent to punish. He can early glide and hit you which puts you in an F-smash situation. And again, he can just build stall in the air for a whiff or setup countermeasures to cover your chase. I haven't even gotten into his nair and on-air strings. Some commenter from a Onin match within the past 3 4 days of this comment said Steve cant string past 70% when we have seen him 0 to death on multiple occasions with laddering building up smash or a string to the sides to spike. He also can spike off you getting caught in and mashing outof the mine cart slowing offstage. He can build block almost every recovery for ledgeguard or setup intentional LFS situations instead and charge d-smash. Just d-tilting is easy "frame trap" and %. His f-throw is a pseudo Kazuya b-throw. Mining to get stronger attacks in of itself alongside the materials to build stuff with is kinda dumb for the scaling it is. His animations for being knocked down and rolling and getting up are so hard to read because they look the same... maybe that is a me problem. Maybe all of this is a me problem, but I have a very hard time believing that. I'm never for banning a character (except bayo she carried so many players and took the would be ballot spot), but Steve rn is so polarizing and cant be tuned now. He's starting to saturate brackets, and I dont wanna wait til the end of the game's lifespan for him to be dealt with. Unless someone can explain to me his true weaknesses. Having one would be Ivysaur counter and being only stopped from 1st place sometimes by the cracked being that is Mkleo is not enough to diswarrent a ban... please give me a respectful debate. I'm not looking to antagonize any player here.
This video is so so good and the concepts are delivered so well but everytime I come back to watch it and hear Steve has to play around Sheik it always hits me in my stomach 😭 what the world could be like if it didn’t take her 20 minutes to break 1 wall
I have decided to subscribe becauae of this one video lol (never seen your videos before and not favoring the fact you are using Steve as an example 😶)
Unfortunately subtitling 30+ minute videos is outside of my realm of capabilities. I'm a one man team with a very unprofitable UA-cam channel. I do always set the language to English so that auto generated subtitles are an option (they're usually plenty accurate and I use them myself all the time) and I do write documents which help you follow along. Sorry that I can't do more than that.
@@RamsesEsports No problem i understood! I saw the video earlier and the automatic subtitles weren't available. They seems to be now Thanks again for your work !
If you do videos like this in the future u might want to break them up into 2-3 smaller videos which increases total uploads and traffic to your channel
@@1Adamrpg I agree w/ Adam. As much as I'm all for upping traffic to boost the channel, having it all concise & in full in a half hour breakdown displays all the info you need on the topic. For those trying to improve & understand competitive Smash better, this format is much more convenient, informative in full & appreciated.
