I am an American veteran who served during the Vietnam War era, even though I wasn't in combat itself. I breaks my heart to think how quickly our veterans and yours are forgotten and sometimes looked upon as of no impotance. Now, in America, at least, we veterans have more support from the general public. Hope your veterans get the credit they also deserve, regardless of politics. Found the video very moving.
My ex partners father is in this video and im so honoured and lucky for him to share this with me.. he doesn’t get to see his dad as they live in different country’s but the bond is still so strong. I love u Chris. If you should ever read this, please know there isn’t a second that passes where your not on my mind. Please take the time to see your dad and I wish u nothing but love and happiness x
This is a wonderful tribute to courageous men who fought so bravely for their country and were a credit to the SADF. As a Rhodesian (partly of South African descent) I also want to pay tribute to members of the SADF who fought side by side with Rhodesia's armed forces in the 1960s and 70s. For example, three members of the SAAF lost their lives in September 1979 when their Puma helicopter was shot down during a joint SADF/Rhodesian operation against terrorist bases in neighbouring Mozambique. Alles van die Beste. Baie dankie, Bok.
We were part of the first S.A.D.F troops to cross the border into Angola on Saturday 16 August 1975 to protect the dam at Calueque (Blood Sweated In Training Is Blood Saved In Battle) 11 Kommando Platoon 4
4 years late but nevertheless. We are more the same than you think. We have always had the same enemies. We both hate dictatorial government. We both have a strong independent pioneer spirit. We both love the wide open spaces. You make jerky, we make biltong. You make barbecues, we make braais. We both love sports with oval balls. We are the last two nations that still honor God. Our only differences are, you beat the British, we lost. You are still a mighty nation. We have been consigned to the pages of history.
Salute to my father, a paratrooper who served in a war he and his generation were sacrificed to, to no end. We'll always remember you and we will not forget what they did to us.
God bless my brothers who didnt come back, I still think of you and miss you every day. To all who were there, it was what it was, get some sleep whenever you can.
My father was a soldier in Angola at the peak of the war and to me it's one of the best feelings to be able to say my father is a veteran and he served and protected our country against the communists, eventhough it turned out to be for nothing in the end.
Think of it this way, without their service S.A. would have gone from Newly Industrialised Developing Country to...a least developed country status. Not like Nigeria or Kenya, but Somalia levels of development. At least right now you can decide what path to take, rather than lacking viable options.
It was never for nothing. Don't believe that even for 1 minute. How much worse could the transition we saw in South Africa have been. How differently could the international picture have turned out if the brave soldiers of South Africa had not stood alone against communistic expansion in southern Africa. It could all have gone the way of mugabe's Zimbabwe. I was in the SADF from 83 to 85, with some of the best people I ever had the honor to meet.

Ian and Brett Caldwell, I knew your father, Bob, who served his country in vietnam as a chopper pilot. He was the stuff that heroes were made off. It was such an honor meeting him. Yes, we made mistakes, big ones at that. Today however, I will not get in bar fight for all of South African soil, after trying to rectify the past, it was all taken for granted and now there is nothing left and still getting worse.
Best thing for South Africa at the end of apartheid would have been for the homelands to keep their governments, but to become part of a Federation, like the US. Every State has its own government so they can listen to the concerns of the local people. Better separation of powers, more power to the provinces. Now, people in Bop and Venda want to secede because the provincial authorities ignore them. Every people (volk) has a right to self determination and the ANC is immorally denying them this.
I realise that many people viewing this video does not speak or understand Afrikaans. This was the border between Angola & South West Africa (Namibia). - The Bush - our war was fought is the dense African bush. A dry, harsh, unforgiving place, with almost every plant, shrub and bush covered in thorns.

The significance of the kaplyn (apart from cultural influences), was it had no local population in it. There used to be a kill-on-sight rule in the Jati, (by my time, it was no longer strictly enforced). The Jati was a critical feature of hot pursuit (hakkejag) operations - our race was always to catch up with the fleeing terrorists before they could cross into the shallow external region of Angola. That was never a guarantee of complete safety for them - we would frequently cross over as well.
To me it's a song to remember the brave young kids, who served their time then. It also has a kinda teaching lesson saying "learn from our mistakes". To the guy that irritated himself for Bok to not have served there, what has it to his meaning of performing this song? Look at Billy Joel's song. Has he been there then? Bok wants Suid Afrika to look at it's history and learn from it. Yet, like in so many other countries in the world, power and greed succeeds
So sad there is no Suid Afrika that it was before- As far as I can understand those soldiers are practically forgotten by contemporary authorities ( not by relatives if any). Sorry, but my country was at SWAPO side, together with Cuba,.At that time we had Afghanistan and thousands of our 18-19 year old boys, who were sent to war by the Kremlin rulers for some political reasons, known only to them, were killed, are forgotten now too. Only grave stones left.
I am an American veteran who served during the Vietnam War era, even though I wasn't in combat itself.
What a time. From wales

Respect, sta vast
Party dae voel dit asof dit gister gebeur het.so many memories.some good and some... yea you know what i mean.altyd vir jou Suid Afrika
Back when south africa used to be a country
read: was run by whites
So sad there is no Suid Afrika that it was before- As far as I can understand those soldiers are practically forgotten by contemporary authorities ( not by relatives if any). Sorry, but my country was at SWAPO side, together with Cuba,.At that time we had Afghanistan and thousands of our 18-19 year old boys, who were sent to war by the Kremlin rulers for some political reasons, known only to them, were killed, are forgotten now too. Only grave stones left.
favorite song!!!
