@@tonyoverstill7587 NBK is the tip of the iceberg of what I’ve seen this dude be late to the party on. But I don’t understand some of these people who collect the movies for any other reason than loving the actual film. Not the box, the FOMO, how it looks on the shelf, etc.
I have to agree with everybody in this thread because dude I don't like this movie well bro you didn't watch it when it was released on the needed mushy influences and ya grrr pretty odd a Wall of film he's not seen.
For anyone that has watched this movie at least a few times, understand exactly what it is, and what they are about to participate (the viewing of) in, this 4k was done extremely well, they gave it the proper love and care it needed, and it has never looked better, details never seen before, clarity that makes this actually stand out .. thank you shout factory for giving us an amazing piece of artwork, well done 👏
I think part of it is you missed the start of the tabloid TV generation. For example the insanity of the OJ Bronco speed limit chase live on TV. That’s what Downey’s character is sending up and that is lost. This is definitely a movie that a certain generation will see diffidently than later ones.
I saw it in the theater when it came out. Got the Director’s Cut 2-tape VHS set, then the Director’s Cut DVD, then later the theatrical cut DVD. For those of us who like the movie and especially the soundtrack, this is worth getting to hear Nine Inch Nails’ “Burn” in the last scene before the end credits roll, instead of the alternate music. In fact, I’ve never heard it in the Director’s Cut! It’s also worth it for me since I never upgraded to the blu-rays, and the Director’s Cut DVD is only 4:3 letterboxed.
yea sometimes when i watch it i think to myself "why cant this be like a normal movie" lol but ive come to appreciate it for how it is. something different.
I have to respectfully and wholly completely disagree with the review. I first saw this film when I believe I was in 8th grade and absolutely loved it then and it's been in my top 5 of all time ever since. The editing choices and ugly cinematography are supposed to bring the viewer into the psychosis of the antagonists, Mickey and Mallory. The film feels psychotic bc the two stars ARE psychotic. Oliver Stone said he basically just said "f**k it" with holding back and went for broke in terms of the violence factor. I know they had trouble getting this to an R rating upon release bc the tone was so dark and twisted. Anyway, I think this is the type of film that could ONLY have been released in the 90s bc only then were we open-minded and weird enough to handle it. I think the assessment would have been different if Ken had seen this years ago as a teen.
I think this movie is an absolute masterpiece. So happy with this release. I felt the same as you when I first seen this movie at 14 years old, but through countless amounts of viewing, I fell in love with it. The movie was originally written to go along with QT’s Earlier movies…especially True Romance. That’s why QT hates it. I think Oliver knocks it out the park with this script.
I think that the 4K transfer of NBK looks amazing. I saw it in a theater back in 1994 and thought it was brilliant then and still do to this very day. The 4K transfer is a huge upgrade over the ancient blu-ray in my opinion.
One of my favorite movies of all time! I remember when this movie first came out I heard people hated it and we're walking out the theater and told me how stupid it was. I know Oliver Stone does not make stupid movie so I kind of knew what to expect going into the theater. I absolutely loved it! I think your problem is not knowing what to expect before you watch it. Some of my favorite movies I did not like but God better through multiple viewings. I think you'd enjoy it more with a different mindset.
You could absolutely be right there. I will watch it again at some point. That's why I don't like to judge a movie completely based on 1 viewing alone.
Ken, watch again with Stone's commentary track. He explains how the imagery relates to the story and why the scenes were shot the way they were. Imo it greatly enhances the understanding of the movie.
Correction. Tarantino wrote the screenplay. It was his first screenplay snd then oliver stone rewrote it yo the point where Tarantino only got a story by credit. Also this is a terrific transfer and the movie is definitely a product of the 90’s but its themes are as relevant as ever
When this first came out-the buzz was everywhere! The cast was/is incredible for the time. Very artsy and punk back in 94..but I would expect it didn’t age well. I might pick it up on a sale. Ive been waiting for a review on the transfer tho since the disc was announced. Love your black and white-editing in the middle of the video 🤣😂 thnx for the review on it
I totally get where you're coming from Ken. This is a weird film for me, because I actually respect it for the style and bold artsy choices, and think it's really well done. But at the same time, it doesn't have a whole lot of rewatch value for me. Case in point: the last time I saw this film was probably in the 90s (I've seen it a couple times). But I bought the director's cut on blu ray well over a decade ago, and I still have never watched it since owning it. I just don't ever find myself in the mood to rewatch this one. So when I heard this was coming to 4K, I knew it was an instant pass for me. I'd rather spend that money on Pumpkinhead LMAO!
@@NYC_Goody I've never seen Pumpkinhead. I've heard good things though, and it sounds right up my alley. I'm a big Lance Henrickson fan. I don't mind a little slow-burn action. I've got the 4K on pre-order. Looking forward to it.

Don't worry Ken, I still have never seen Natural Born Killers and don't own any copies on DVD or Blu-ray. Probably still not going to for the for seeable future or see it.
Always appreciate your honesty Ken - I did already pick this up and I don’t think I’ve ever seen it through and through so now you have me very curious to re-watch
I can appreciate if it wasn't for you. This is probably one you needed to see when it was released. That guerilla filmmaking was crazy watching it at 12. I re-watched it later on Hallucinogens and it blew my mind. Still does, Cheers!
To each their own. I really loved this film when it came out. I probably watched my laserdisc once a week. Though a lot of people, especially at the time, loved the film for the wrong reasons and it almost became a parody of itself just because of the reaction. I hadn't seen it in years but picked up the 4k steellbook and it's stood up to the test of time for me. I probably won't watch it as often as did back in the day, but it's definitely worth owning in 4k for me.
I think that you've left the most the interesting and accurate comment regarding this film. I too watched this movie at least once a week, for awhile after it's video release. You're spot on pointing out that people loved this movie for the wrong reasons.
I'm a huge Tommy Lee Jones fan and he was just ridiculous in this movie. For a completely reverse performance check him out in Rolling Thunder if you haven't already. He's fantastic in a supporting role as Vietnam vet.
Great review, I'm glad I stuck with the blu-ray after hearing your review, not that the blu-ray disks would play on my region B machine so the 4K would have been it
The secret to understanding NBK is that it's a big-budget Roger Corman drive-in B-movie. Oliver Stone directly says so in the commentary when the blood hits the windshield in the opening credits. That's why it's so over-the-top and cartoonishly unrealistic in it's violence and setpieces. It's intentionally trying to replicate the various low-budget styles of late 60s/early 70s exploitation/Grindhouse filmmakers most of whom cut their teeth working for Roger Corman's New World Pictures. For years I never understood this movie's reputation--yeah, it's really violent, but the violence isn't realistic at all--until I saw the commentary on Blu-ray. I like it a little better now because I was a huge movie snob in the 90s. I bought the BB exclusive steelbook because I'm a sucker for those particular steels on films I'm willing to own. Still haven't opened it yet.
Hi Ken! 👋 I think it’s one of those “you had to be there” type movies. Sort of like Pulp Fiction, when this movie came out there was nothing like it and if you’re just now watching it in 2023, it doesn’t hit the same way it did then. Both cuts are wild, but the directors cut is a lot of people’s preference. Also picked up the Steelbook because it used original promotional art
You should watch the alternative ending, as well as the Ashley Judd courtroom scene if you haven't already. Buy I told you it's a frenzied mind fuck of a movie
Ken you are not alone on this movie. I saw this one many moons ago.....I never cared for this movie and I like all the actors in the movie.....just didn't care for the story or presentation of the story....totally agree with you on this one!
Gotta say Ken I couldn't DISAGREE with you more. I thought the 4K presentation was immaculate given the film/video source and it gave the movie a larger than life feel which made it feel SCARIER than I originally remember it yrs ago.
People will say anything looks great these days. 😔 Remember when 4k 1st came out? They were putting some major time and muscle into those transfers weather new or old.
I like the movie myself but yeah it's not one of my favorite Oliver Stone films. Still I give him props for trying to do something different, many scenes are in black and white, shot on video, film grain to no film grain so in certain parts the 4K transfer looks stunning. I thought the pharmacy snake venom scene which was all green looked outstanding in 4K. The whole point of the movie is criminals turning into celebrities by the mainstream media, which ironically still happens today.
Hey Ken, now would be a good time for you to watch Run Lola Run. It's similar in some of those 90s ways of creative film making but has more endearing characters in a (somewhat) more straight-forward plot.
Hallo Ken! when I first saw your review of this film I totally disagreed with you. After watching this film yesterday, I agree with you. I remember this movie being much better than what it really is. having said that, I checked out the Blu-ray version and I do not comment on the 4K version of the film.
It's a "classic" for me. Saw it on a Friday night the first day it came out without knowing much about the film. I was also trippin on Acid so I absolutely LOVED all the crazy visuals.
Yeah, this is one of those films that you "get" or dont. I think its a strong statement about the level of violence and celebirty that was very prevalent in the 80s and 90s. If your looking for straightforward, this aint it. P.s. The 4k is beautiful
Haven’t watched this in 4K yet, but saw it in the theater, had it on Laserdisc when it came out. What’s great is we get this movie plus JFK coming in December. Hopefully Nixon is not far behind.
First time watch. Miss movies like this . Tommy lee and Robert Downey were amazing. 4K looked great and the 5.1 was good. Actually traveled around the speakers. First hour is different. Little hard to follow then the last hour it takes a more traditional sequential approach. Last hour was the best part. How were you out at that point
On the fence about this one, I saw it back in 94 and didn't enjoy it that much then. It's undeniably a collectible film though and may deserve a second watch so not sure.
@@NYC_Goody I agree to a point, I wouldn't for instance go buy most of the Vinegar Syndrome titles just because they're collectible even though most are things I'd never watch. Something that's culturally significant like NBK though is a bit harder to ignore if you're doing this as a hobby.
@@Aramule if it was a film I didn't like, I'd be able to easily ignore it. At the end of the day, you're collecting for yourself and not others. So if it's culturally significant, what's that mean to YOU? Worth watching? Actually enjoy it? Absolutely get it
Lol a first time watch of NBK in 4K I knew this was gonna be an issue. I’m watching the movie and I thought people who’ve never seen the film will have an issue with the transfer. The movie is made from I think nearly 20 different film formats from 8mm to 16mm and even video cameras. I mean you had to have known this Ken? I myself who’s seen the film in every format possible, certain parts shine in 4K. This I isn’t the DNR fiasco of Platoon.
It’s obviously a mockery for how the media glorifies serial killers! Fun Fact; Tarantino hated the final version until he ran into Johnny Cash letting him know he liked his films especially that Natural Born Killers which made Quentin form a different opinion of the film!
You didn't like this movie? It's the best movie ever made, and it's satire on how media obsession is the problem. It predicted how the internet destroyed society.
I bought this back in the nineties on laserdisc & i too was expecting something much different, maybe a modern type of bonnie & clyde style movie but it definitely wasn't !
To me, it’s a social commentary of the times, a bit more relevant now considering that people do idolize serial killers, they get Hulu and Netflix documentaries glorifying what they did and we know how insensitive it is, but like everything we draw a blind eye to it. I wish you got to see this when it first came out, I feel you may have a better appreciation for what Oliver Stone did. I am confused to why you were mad over the stylistic choices. It’s a product of its time. Dangerfield killed it in the movie being such a scum. It was like he was channeling Joe Spinell from The Undertaker, Maniac, so on and so forth.
A lot of scenes are better in quality I can agree with..but: is this also the directors cut with over an hour of film.? As in the dvd I bought about 20 years ago..that was a version with an hour longer movie and more gore scenes throughout the movie..also interviews with O. Stone and all the actors..If all this is here on this 4K I will buy it but if it's not I will stick to mine. But I have to say: great box..and I reccommend the CD album OST.. I have that also..itś great and with a great image from Micked with an american flag behind him and Mallory..that is a great image besides he is standing with his sunglasses on
I have the 'Diamond Luxe' edition of Green Mile - really nice, I've got the Arrow Video box set of Green Mile but, like you said, I'm not selling the Diamond Luxe one :)
I agree with what many of you said, how can you be in your late 30’s to early 40’s and are just now watching Natural Born Killers!!!! How can you have a copy for 2 years and never have watched it?? Cause he is simply a collector. You should be ashamed of yourself!!! I think Ken is more a media collector and not an actual lover of cinema!! I watched a video a few weeks ago where he talked down on the Stan Winston masterpiece Pumpkinhead, but in the same video praised the William Friedkin shit show that was Bug!!! What exactly did this guy watch in the 90’s? Power Rangers instead of the great cinema of the 80s and 90s is my guess
I was 5 - 14 in the 90s, so yeah, Power Rangers was on the rotation of what I watched. If you don't like the channel or my thoughts, there's other channels and film experts you'd probably appreciate more. Go there.
It's much better than True Romance to me. I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, but it's really good, but I could see it being overhyped to you from people since you run a big channel. I'm surprised that you didn't like it though, especially with some of the crap you DO like. (jk). I'm looking forward to getting it, but I don't want to pay full price. If you want to unload it, I might be interested.
I remember seeing Natural Born Killers in theaters when it came out. And all I can say is I thought it suck. And not worth owning at any price. Bc to me it was just a one and done watch and I have no desire to ever rewatch Natural Born Killers ever again
Watched NBK in 94 and same wasn't that impressed....film just style over any substance and i agree that is an accurate description, it no True Romance 😂. KALIFORNIA film from 93 with Brad Pit, i remeber that was way better.....other films from 90s Cape Fear with Robert Deniro....damn they need do Menace II Society 4k
The movie is 100% shot on film. Why would it nor be worth a 4K upgrade ? All the stylistic choices still look better in 4k. The blu looks terrible by comparison
Ken, I hated this movie back when it came out, I really hated seeing Rodney in this movie, this movie is garbage! I will never watch it again. Toss it with Bubba Ho-Temp!!
I didn't care for it. I've seen it at least 20 times or more. I would force myself to sit through it when I was a kid and even liked it on occasion. But I can't in good conscience say I truly like the film. And the older I get the more I pull away from it.@@NYC_Goody

Last hour was the best part. How were you out at that point
I watched it for the first time last week and don’t understand the hype. I thought it was mediocre at best and absolutely awful at worst.
So does this include the cut that has nine inch nails burn over the collage of demon faces before the credits roll?
On the fence about this one, I saw it back in 94 and didn't enjoy it that much then. It's undeniably a collectible film though and may deserve a second watch so not sure.
Never buy just to collect
Ohh very cool factoid!
I’m surprised you didn’t fall in love with this this one is right up your alley maybe in a couple years in the re watch next time watch the theatrical
I have that also..itś great and with a great image from Micked with an american flag behind him and Mallory..that is a great image besides he is standing with his sunglasses on
Yeah this was not one of my favorites. My friends liked it but it was just weird.
Go there.
Movie is what I would call a masterpiece. The 4K is absolutely stunning
Yeah this one didn't seem like my cup of tea
Haha. I didnt like this movie either.
Ouch! You really missed the point of the movie. The editing is deliberate and serves the narrative. It’s more relevant now than ever.
I don't feel like I missed it. I just didn't care for it. I appreciated what it was trying to do.
Got the Diamond-Lux releases of NBK and Gremlins. Cool idea but they scratch and break way too easily.
The movie is definitely not for everyone!
True Romance is a classic in comparison of the two titles.
It pains me how you’ve missed so many classics like this gem! Lol
The movie is 100% shot on film. Why would it nor be worth a 4K upgrade ? All the stylistic choices still look better in 4k. The blu looks terrible by comparison
You can't watch a movie 30 years after and expect it to be able to stand up to the build up.
Its a 3rd eye opener 😉👁️😉
I’ve seen 60 year old movies that lived up to the hype. Why not 30?
I think it’s a nice transfer.. great movie definitely gotta be in a certain type of state of mind to view lol…
I've just never really liked it. I watched it when it first came out then a few months ago. I think it's the whole psychedelic thing.
But why did you buy it when you didn’t like it?
Blind buy.
You are talking about all of this great things about the movie as if they were bad things…
I enjoyed this film bk in the day
Ken, I hated this movie back when it came out, I really hated seeing Rodney in this movie, this movie is garbage! I will never watch it again. Toss it with Bubba Ho-Temp!!
NBK is a great film.
I think it's a stinker. Have watched it 3 times since it was first released, and it definitely hasn't grown on me.
I don't see how it could. Lol
I will miss you Ken.
Same here....
"Written down"
Quentin Tarentino wrote it and he hated it.
I'm with you, Ken. I saw this in the theatre and I thought it was a piece of crap.
Great movie
NOT a masterpiece...way too Hollywood and tries too hard.
Definitely not buying the disk and may never watch again.
Your review is off sorry
I hate Natural Born Killers. I will never watch it again. Absolute filth.
Filth?! It was that bad?
I didn't care for it. I've seen it at least 20 times or more. I would force myself to sit through it when I was a kid and even liked it on occasion. But I can't in good conscience say I truly like the film. And the older I get the more I pull away from it.@@NYC_Goody
