A ton of people did this back then, I think this is a parody of that. People would record them on vhs tapes and later record and post them using the infancy of the internet. But that eventually fell out of style when recordings like "Hello my future girlfriend" blew up and people started finding them embarrassing.

If it actually was a “VHS tape” like he claimed he could’ve at least shown himself putting Said VHS tape into a player. People that claim to have Cursed/haunted footage and never show the thing containing the video itself. It really takes away the legitimacy of the whole thing and it makes me not too invested in the story or ARG they are trying to tell.

The tip-off about "real VHS tapes!" are that they always are in a 16:9 aspect ratio. VHS tapes are meant to be played on a CRT TV (or at least they were built with that in mind) and the tapes should be in a 4:3 aspect ratio.
They can stretch them in post production.

The problem with all these "found tape" kind of fake videos is that they almost always blatantly and massively overdo it with the "VHS effect" while disregarding almost everything that makes up actual old tapes and what they've looked like.
A "chewed" tape doesn't have bad quality and artifacts over the whole length of the tape. A real tape, especially one that probably wasn't watched a lot, isn't going to wave and cut out all the time like that either. And hell, what tape has stalker footage, toy advertising and a wedding recorded on it, so close together that all of those recording seem to be located in the same ~3mins of the tape? Who, with the tech and know-how to edit and add text to a VHS Video of the time (which was hard, before just any computer could do it), would leave wimpering and moments of rage on their dating tape?
Not to mention that it's literally the same font almost every fake VHS/TV Broadcast is using.
I hope we'll some day see a fake "lost VHS" thing done right. Then again, if they'd do it right, we wouldn't know if it's fake...

That "fake vibe" the video has is due to the fact that all of its effects are digitally rendered. Pretty sure it wasn't even recorded on an actual VHS tape. The audio is another giveaway. Too clean.

That’s the most 45 looking 36 year old I’ve ever seen.
It's cute. But I'm going to tell you why it's fake.
Ok, it's meant to look like it was filmed on a recycled VHS. We've got a wedding video in there, before that we've got the Toys я Us ad, and before that, a shot of a house. So, first, no one is going to use a double recycled VHS to film their wedding. Ok, maybe they were incredibly cheaping out, it was post 1991 so VHS had dropped significantly in price. Maybe they accidentally taped over the wedding, huh? But the commercial is from 1989, so the wedding is taped over whatever had the commercial. With the house footage, that means this wedding was the third time that the VHS was used. Tony's dating video is the fourth time this thing is being used. By 2001, I was able to go to the local Wal*Mart and get a blank VHS for a dollar, a five pack for almost five dollars. Imagine being that cheap, you can buy the wedding, but you can't drop a dollar or two on a new VHS tape, huh? Doesn't sound like something an entrepreneur making a dating video would do.
But, secondly, when you recycle a VHS tape. It doesn't just static back and forth like an episode of Robot Chicken like that. Oh sure, if it's recording, and you press stop, and then start recording again it might static away and back again. But when you recycle the tape like that, generally the magnetic strip does bleed through traces of the previous video, and during playback it's a little more transitional, fading in and out, not just when you stop recording. You might even see the 'ghost' of the previous video superimposed in the frame.
Yes the tracking lines are a nice touch, and the background helps with that, but it's an easy effect that can be bluescreened in with very little effort, as I have done in several of my own videos, and there's actually an app that will allow you to add this effect in. You would still see the bleed through even with the tracking lines.
It only took a reverse image search and logic to debunk this one 😂 bruh
