Hi Margaret..good to see you outside... please PLEASE baby that foot while it heals.. maybe carry a cane while you putter around even if you don't need to use it consistently..will have it for balance restoration instead of extra stress on healing foot...just my thoughts..take care.

I only buy with sales and never meats from Walmart. It's such a shame the price of everything. How do families with children manage? I'm 70, have a bad back and impaired vision, but my backyard garden has taken over the yard. I do pick up regular canned goods just to supplement my stock, or for family who may need it. Margaret, while your foot heals, please use a cane. I use mine, especially when I go from sitting to standing. Already broke my arm a few years back. Don't want to do any more damage to my body. Have a blessed day.

When I was a kid, my dad would tell my mom before she went to the grocery store not to buy anything that didn't swell up when you cooked it. 😁 Of course, he was half joking, but the truth is we ate a lot of rice, dried beans, etc.

Hens are laying like crazy so we are able to share with friends and neighbor. Some of our hens are hatching out chicks so the number of chickens we have is increasing. One neighbor brought us homemade cinnamon raisin bread and a loaf of white bread. So wonderful! Looks like we will have an over abundance of blackberries this year so when I make jam, I’ll make sure friends and family get some too.hoping our apple and pear trees do well this year so I am able to can applesauce. Our fig trees are old enough now that we should have figs this year. Almost lost our cherry trees but looks like there are going to make it after all, but don’t know yet if we will get cherries this year. We raise our own meat we have goats, sheep, chickens and soon we will have a couple calves. Freezer is full with over 700 lbs from our last calf. None of us can do everything, but hopefully, we can all do something. Even if it’s just growing herbs on your kitchen window,it all helps. Take care.

I do can and dry and freeze my own food in large quantities, I also but a lot of canned meat as well. First I get a lot of wild caught fish, sardines, herring, mackerel, and salmon. Between the dollar store and Aldi I can do it pretty economically. When Walmart had the Keystone beef for $8.98 I bought a lot of that, when Sam's club was closing out their four pack of canned beef for $10.61, I bought a lot of that too. I have also bought cases of Vienna sausage at Sam's and Aldi. Aldi sells canned corned beef and a knock off version of spam like lunch meat pretty reasonable and I have a lot of that. Lastly Big Lots has a lot of Armour Treet, which is another close relative of Spam and they sent me discount coupons pretty often so I stock up when I can. I have been on the carnivore diet for fifteen months, so I eat only meat and seafood and that is all that I store anymore.

I agree with others here. Stock up on what you can and shop the sales. If completely fine to get canned foods to add to your pantry. I have a mix of both as I’ve come to the conclusion that some things aren’t worth my time and effort to can at home. So I’ll buy those and put my efforts elsewhere in my preparations.
One thing I try to do is not buy the same brand of a store bought food for my whole supply of an item. Just in case there’s a recall. Then I don’t lose the entire amount.

Please check your area food pantries, or food banks. You may qualify for something. If you recieve stuff you can't use or don't like, donate it back or put it in a blessing box if you have those down there in Alabama. Times are hard and there is no shame in this economy. Many Blessings to you and your family.

No offense in my comment, but if she can afford to spend 500$ for groceries I don’t think the food bank is for her. Most people would feel extremely blessed to have that kind of money for food.

I stock up on canned veggies and sauces, I have pressure canned meat that I find on sale, and have some jars of pressure canned potatoes. Sometimes we have to face the fact that as we get older we can't do all the things we use to do, I have a presto electric digital canner and it is the best thing I have bought for myself otherwise I wouldn't have much of anything home canned. I might have some tomatoes they are planted but I don't think I will can many. Your $500.00 grocery bill we would have fainted at that a few years ago, but now it is just a fact. 10lbs of sugar last week was almost $9.00 at Walmart if it was up to me I wouldn't be feeding the humming birds this year but my partner he is committed to feeding them We buy sugar in 25 lb bags that went from $13. to almost $20. using 2 cups a sugar a day it don't take long to use 25lb. he buys it and says that is our entertainment watching them. I am glad we don't have as many as last year.(yet)lol Margaret you are very wise filling your pantry with canned goods, we don't know when crops will fail and you will have backups even if you did can. I just make sure to write best by dates in big Permanant marker on front easy to see so I use oldest first.

105 or 106 degrees in Alabama feels like about 142 the humidity is so brutal you can cut it with a knife. The humidity is so bad you can't hardly breathe in July and August

I live in the midwest and just bought a whole watermelon at my local grocery for $6.99. Chicken breast was $3.57 /pound, and chicken thighs were $2.57 /pound. I find it hard to believe the prices were that high, even at a farmer's market. Sounds like you need to find a better place to buy your groceries.

Margaret, you have a troll putting out some ugly videos. His group makes fun of Grandmothers. He makes fun of voting, and the flag. Zachery michael. They think prepping is funny. We have warships off the coast of Florida. I think you,re doing it right. He doesn,t realize most seniors live on $10,000 to $12,000 a year. We are independent, and don,t ask others for money, and can go without asking for food. He says he is disabled. I see some disabilitys for sure. He loves to make fun of people who try to get by,and stay out of others way. He has his minions making fun. Don,t let this hurt you. You have one of my very favorite channels. When the electricity goes off,i wonder how they plan to get by. We will do just fine, but,i,m betting they won,t. The young don,t see whats coming. We,ve lived through so many decades, and have seen it all. I,m so proud of you,and i have been watching some of your older cooking video,s. I love the sour-dough bread video. You,re doing it right.
