    glad Erick finally came around to the excellence that is this game, but didn't even mention the OST? Seriously epic OST, one of the best I have ever heard. Loved the story and its plot twists, the combat does take time to adjust to, but its also really good. Its my all time favorite JRPG. Its really THAT good!

    The reason the bosses have so much HP is because if they didn't when you stack multipliers or topple lock the boss will die in like 5 seconds.

      I don't understand his point about this. if it's on Xenoblade 2 then yes enemies were designed with chain attack orb combos so they have a shit ton amount of hp if you don't know what you are doing. but with Xenoblade 1, I never encountered this problem, I didn't even spam topple lock.

    My favorite part about this game (and the series) is the long lost design choice of allowing you to stumble upon crazy high level enemies early on, only to be able to come back & destroy them later in the game.
    I hate when games have enemies that always scale to your level. You never get to feel a proper sense of power. Oh, and the music is fantastic :)

    The story for this game is one of my favorite JRPG stories since the original Xenogears itself. I did beat the Wii version was kind of a pain with the remote so all the changes for the DE with the pro controller just made it feel even more amazing. And it finally looks as good as it deserves to look. I always felt the graphics for the Wii version did this amazing world setting a major disservice. This one is up there in my top 10of JRPGs and at this point I have played hundreds of JRPGs in my life so that is saying a lot.

  • @antbrow8957

    Well good news Erick, there's a handy feature in DE called Expert Mode. You can scale the levels however you please since this game is super sensitive to level differences and that can vastly affect the difficulty. Generally you want to level down your characters by about 4-5 levels under your targets. That means most targets should be in the YELLOW color. Then it's more balanced. When you get better at the game you can even fight RED targets consistently (they require either an Ether team or a physical team with agility, night vision, or just Dunban's Serene Heart Aura to hit).
    I have no idea what you're talking about with the fights taking too long. I was burning through most encounters my first run. Did you utilize your skill links? Those can be easy to forget and go a long way to making your party insane. Also, aside from the very end of the game in the Bionis Interior, I'd say the game is like one of the least grindy JRPGs ever.

    Dethroning God has been a concept first introduced since JRPGS original inception back in the late 80's. But you know, I think at this point Erick, most of us has just welcomed it as a sort of trend of jrpg stories. I think what matters most though is how the story has clever twists and turns and developments that gives its own unique appeal leading up to the point where you fight god. The end result may be a god like enemy but the story surrounding it certainly has its own original plot that unfolds.
    I have to be honest though, there is nothing more satisfying then fighting an other wordly cosmic being of destruction for a "final boss", it always makes the final enemies really interesting. Unlike lets say FF XV which ended up just being a glorified powered up Arydn. Way to break Traditions FF XV :)

      @@mateopadilla3477 Other than the graphics, the biggest improvement to the Switch version was the quality of life changes. There's a few annoyances in the older versions that the Switch changes.
      However, I'd say it's still worth playing the 3ds version if you don't have a Switch. The older versions aren't that bad compared to the Switch one. Doing a 100% run on the old ones is a lot tougher, but if you just want to play for the story (which is best for the first playthough) the 3ds version is fine.

    An A tier game for me which was a B tier for me before Definitive Edition
    The music is fantastic, the game looked really good in its definitive edition (I remember playing the Wii version and at least once a day always saying "I wish this was a Playstation game") and I did enjoy the combat system quite a lot. The worldbuilding is fantastic and it's actually the main reason this game looks so good, even if graphics obviously help. But it's the worldbuilding what created the amazing locations the game has to offer.
    Topple mechanic could quickly become a bit too broken, but it still took some time, practice and experimentation to get to that point, so that's kinda fine. I overall had a really fun time with its combat system, though I do wish the super bosses would've been a bit more of a challenge. But then again, I guess this can be solved if I just handicap myself into beating them without topple, and now that's quite a challenge.
    Now, about my negative points... lets start by saying I didn't have Erick's problem with the difficulty. Haven't tried casual, but normal felt like the right difficulty for me. Challenging enough, but not a grindfest or mission impossible, and not a walk in the park either. It was ok.
    That said, I am one of those old RPG fans I guess that wasn't that impressed with the story. I liked it, but it was an ok, nice story. That's it. That's technically not a negative point, and this might be unfair, but it does feel underwhelming when you have Xeno in your name, since Xenogears and Xenosaga have some of the best stories ever produced in JRPG. Kinda connected to the story, and more in a personal way, I didn't really feel that attached to the main cast. I don't think I disliked a single member of the cast, but I lacked attachment to them... wait, actually I didn't like "Seven" (juuuust in case someone still hasn't been spoiled about this). Shulk was a nice protagonist I guess, and I did like Melia until the story indeed kinda forgot about her (Future Connected was appreciated). Also kinda liked Dunban... but again, not that much attachment for me, and I tend to be good at getting attached to characters in my games while I play them.
    As a whole, my negative points are not even negative points to be honest. It's more like what they lacked for me to make this game an S tier in my book.
    Without being much of a fan of open worlds in RPGs, this is more or less an open world, and I actually did enjoy it quite a lot, and running through the fields, caves, mountains or whatever with such an amazing sountrack is something I actually enjoyed.
    The clock is also great in this game. Just as I thought with its Wii version, it reminded me of Radiata Stories, where every NPC has it's own daily routine and moves from place to place at different times, helping the world feel more alive.
    Finally, just saying that besides the graphical improvements, the quality of life improvements from Definitive Edition are also a huge help into making this one of the better remasters, if not the best, I've ever played.
    Can't jump into the "one of the best games I've ever played" wagon, but I can definitely highly recommend it. And I mean, I think I have a 200+ hours save file on the Switch (and had a similar one for the Wii), so yeah, wouldn't spend that much time on a game I didn't really like.

    While I respect your opinion, I don't understand why the complaints about the game being too grindy and bosses have too much HP when you consider Persona 3 FES a masterpiece including it's gameplay? (Which I believe FES has the worst gameplay among JRPG history without the party control mod)
    Do the sidequests, always upgrade arts/equipment/gems, take out the enemies within range, take advantage of the skill link trees, and you'll be good.

  • @KnolanCross
    @KnolanCross 3 роки тому +6

    The game has three difficulty settings, not two, namely casual, normal and expert.
    I don't want to sound like a jerk, but if you are having trouble with this game you likely did not understand how to use its systems properly (from your description, you did not use topple and seal correctly), how to use the gems to do more damage or how the chain attacks work.

    • @Eternalwarpuppy
      @Eternalwarpuppy 3 роки тому

      I felt like the combat had a fine line between easy and impossible. If I was within 3 levels of whatever boss I was fighting, the combat was trivial. I could beat any boss without losing a single character. If I was more than 3 levels below a boss, almost all of my basic attacks would miss and since arts only got charged on hits I couldn't heal or do anything and I would die while barely leaving a scratch on the boss.

    • @KnolanCross
      @KnolanCross 3 роки тому +1

      @@Eternalwarpuppy you can counter miss chance in several ways, easiest one is getting higher agility (gems, use light equipment and talents). You can also use Melia, there is a summon element that increases agility.

      @DragonEdge10 3 роки тому

      @@Eternalwarpuppy Exactly what KnolanCross said. With the proper gem and/or skill link setup, missing shouldn't be much of an issue for even 10 levels under. In fact, my mostly optimised endgame setup allowed me to delevel to like, lvl 1 and beat a lvl 30 unique enemy or something ridiculous like that. It's really not that bad if you understand what the mechanics are reliant upon, but it can be easy to miss some because most enemies in the game can be brute forced (and indeed is sometimes quicker to brute force in the short run).

    I had high hopes for this game but in my second session playing I literally started to fall asleep while playing. I figured I was just tired, so I stopped playing, but then it happened on my next session as well. The battle felt very repetitive, and not very challenging once you level up high enough. I don't think it was on casual mode because the bosses were pretty tough. I think part of the problem that I had with it was that your health gauge fully restores a few seconds after defeating an enemy. It just felt like I was running from checkpoint to checkpoint and having repetitive battles in between. I also felt like some of the items just made it super easy to get OP, and the quests were really basic fetchquests that weren't rewarding. I guess this game was just not for me.

      I think the problem in general that the did have much diversity it was just exploration & combat nothing to break the repetitiveness, (side quests are boring, so I don't count those) but overall I enjoyed the supercharged mini bosses. There were some platforming, but not a lot, but I hope Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is has way more to offer whenever that game comes out.

    Appreciate the review Erick. So glad you have come around to this game. With the definitive edition it has become my favorite RPG of all time. As you said the plotline is not original but with most RPG's we are getting to the point of that happening. But also as you said it was written excellently. It's not without it's flaws but the voice acting and the plot are great. As many have mentioned here, boss battles all centered around strategy. I found no boss battles difficult simply because I knew which characters and which skills were best used to counter and get the maximum DPS when facing these hard bosses. I think that alone made it intriguing. It wasn't about just spamming or powering up, it was truly about planning each of your four characters and their skill sets. And the ending to this game gave a true ENDING feel. Even without Future Connected I was satisfied with how it all went down. And to echo others, one of the best soundtracks on any RPG. Also the immersion that this world has is amazing. When you fall off the floating islands, you FEEL like you are falling. When that music that signifies a HARD enemy is about to attack you feel the suspense. Overall it's not perfect but I would still rank it as S tier but I respect your view on it as an A tier and can understand. Great video. Keep it up.

But the Wii version felt like a major accomplishment, having been a staff member of Operation Rainfall -- t'was our 1st accomplishment. I'm proud to say that I didn't give in to switching to casual mode regardless to how many times I struggled and failed at beating several boss fights. 😄 Sometimes, it all comes down to how you can take advantage of certain attacks and tactics. My biggest gripe is how some non-boss fights abuse the future visions with fatal attacks so much. Like I'd have a full 4,000 HP and the future vision would say "whoop, you're gonna die with the enemy's 6,000 fatal blow 🤭." Like come on now! And sometimes, that happens way too many times and back to back. But other than that, the game is pretty solid.

      The main problem you'll encounter is not knowing where the hell to find stuff for sidequests. I recommend being armed with the Wiki. If you find any one of those things annoy you, try the DE someday and you won't be disappointed - but disable the new soundtrack, it's god-awful.

  • @robertwahlstrom
    @robertwahlstrom 2 роки тому

    Actually they don't if you play the game correctly. For one you have various systems like the Skill three and gems etc. to make you a lot more powerful. The other aspects is to understand how to use chain attacks correctly. If you use chain attacks right you can do some insanely long chain attacks with some insane damage multipliers. It's also a bit about finding the enemies weakness, for example the telethia boss can easily be defeated by using the right monado art (the game explains which one).
    Also if you just grab every single quest you see and kill whatever that quest is pointing at you probably don't need to grind at all.

  • @cortbelmont
    @cortbelmont 3 роки тому

    The original on the Wii was grindy, but I went to explore frequently and that made me feel like I was not grinding at all, the "no game over" mechanic helps a lot too, you died? no problem! you keep all your XP, items and all; you just go back to the nearest viewpoint. I just had trouble with 2 or 3 bosses, the disciple woman inside the Bionis was the worst for me, I thought I'd never defeat her, but 3 levels up and it was manageable. The best part of the remaster is not having to use a @#$%ing Wii mote. I hope they bring Xenoblade X too so I can play it without the @#$%ing WiiU gamepad
