This isn't even a joke. My office manager (a woman) got a quote last week for a new bathroom faucet to repair a leak. The quote was over $700. I went out on Saturday and fixed it in 30 minutes for $37 with a faucet from Home Depot . I always thought this was just a joke, but it is absolutely real.
Actually, it's stories like that that MAKE this a joke. if situations like THAT never happened it wouldn't be relatable, but you go off! :D - Also, you're a mug if you charged them anything less than $300.
Lol, didn't even notice the shirts.. For real they should sell some of these items as merch. It would be fun to wear and you'd have instant connection with people you run into who get the joke.

I experienced this recently! Wanted to change floors from tile to wood, they quoted me 20,000$ for a 1000 sq foot house. Said they would have to redo the foundation and yadayada. I did it myself for a few grand including material.
@@SonicCloudLinknaah for 1000 sq should be about $5000 material and $5000 labor. At that price they’re making $15,000 for what would take me maybe 7 days by myself including all new molding
@@SonicCloudLink I misread the comment, didn’t see the fact that they’re changing it from tile, that adds a lot of work. Still 20,000 is pretty high. $15,000 is more reasonable
As a contractor, you can build almost an entire room for $1,300 in materials. It's the labor that gets you. So I'm guessing they were charging you $20 a square foot. And I'm also guessing that they had to tear out all the tile on a thousand square feet and then repour self-leveling concrete down in order to put the flooring in so that it's level. Yeah, I probably would have done it for half as much or less depending on other details
And contractors/self employed trades people as well. They know exactly how long it will take them and they just hand out ridiculous high quotes. I know of an electrician who made 1500$ in a 6 hour day in labour!!! He knew exactly how long it will take him and he knew exactly what the materials would cost... it is the Wild West around here right now. On the upside: if you are honest, reliable and do good work you will have more work and happy customers than you can ever handle. Minimum wage is 15$/h and the average income 25$/h.
Confused Human Nikki is the best, because we've all been there. Also, dealing with my mechanic taught me that I need to learn more about my car... Can't blame him, I'd try get an extra few hundred bucks out of me too.
Having been a contractor, people often think that you are like this, even when you are not. But, when you are honest, they still ask if you give a discount for cash. I always told them that I didn’t, as I always paid my tax on it. If you don’t put any cash through your books, the tax office notices, and can end up investigating you closely. I did have one job I went to, which I was told had a fault on the boiler (furnace). When I checked it, I found that a part had been intentionally loosened. I realised that it was one of those rogue trader TV shows. After all, the family had seemed too perfect, if you know what I mean. I explained to them what I had found, and that I had reconnected the wire. I said that I wasn’t charging them, as I realised that it was a setup situation for a show. They were surprised, as apparently I had been the only engineer, that had reported the correct fault. I thought anything that I charged them would look bad on TV, so I thought it better to take the loss. I have no idea if I ever made the Final Cut of the show or not.
Exactly like u r going to just service ur car , just oil and filter and then ... booom ... mechanics making u start to think about selling the car itself:D

Know of an electrician who made 1500$/day in labour (thats getting close to 200$/h). They give people quotes knowing exactly how long it will take them to do it.
