- In this video I show you what gear and set up I use for trolling crankbaits for crappie. I cover rods, reels, line, baits and other terminal tackle. There is a follow up video to this one of the actual trip to Lake of the Ozarks which you will find a link to at the end of this video when the subsequent video is published.

Mr. Baker, thank you for each video & the education they provide!!
You are my crappie hero. Thank you for all the videos and very helpful hints and tricks. Your videos have greatly improved my success. For 30 plus years all I did was single pole with a minnow or a jig in northeast Arkansas and always had success, but I have moved to Heber springs Arkansas and fish Greers Ferry lake and it was a defiantly a 180 as far as water clarity and structure. This lake is similar to lake of the Ozarks and your advise and wisdom is much appreciated. God bless and keep those videos coming.
Thanks for watching!
Mike thank you for your very informative videos i have purchased the equipment over the last year i plan to start cranking with in the next week or so again thank you.
Great information! I like your Bandit 300 color choices. Similar favorites. I would add Orange Crush.
Thanks for the tip I bought me six of those rods and their rods are awesome keep up the great work Love the channel awesome awesome
Great video. Keep up the great work.
Thanks as always for the excellent video.
Really enjoy the crankbait information, I'm going to start with crankbaits in a couple of weeks for the first time.
Love the cranks I've gotten from Fred Pittman. His paint jobs are awesome and have really held up well after pulling them through Sardis/Enid all last summer and now again this year.
I live @ the 52 mile marker and we are still catching Crappie, in and around our dock.
Yeah my question is you fish with 6 to 8 rods how many rods as one guy allow to use I fish Ohio we are allowed to use 2 rods Just asking
It is a 33 hook limit in Mo. Any rods over three must be labeled with name and address or name and conservation number. I label all my rods with a paint pen.
Hi Mike, on this rod holder set-up, do you remember the height of the riser? Looks about seat height... Also is it just one trolling bar, or did yiu connect 2 bars together with the cutting board? Thsnk you for any info..
Not sure of the riser height on this setup. It is a Driftmaster rod holder. Single bar that goes all the way across the back of the boat. It is the tallest riser they sold at the time.
@@MikeBakerVideos ok, thanks
Looking forward to seeing the videos
You need line counting reel s
Apologies if this has already been asked but what lb test are you using?
8 lb.
I'm looking forward to this video. Deep cranking for crappie. Like to see a video on livescope and Blue cats
Great Job Mike I started flat lining crank baits a few years ago with great success, especially in LOZ (when the boat traffic permits}, The most impressive aspect that fisherman can take away from your video's is the simplistic method you have developed. Mike you have me rethinking my setup of linecounter reels, staggered 14 to 6 foot rods, snap weights and braided line with 6 ft flora leaders, Yea we catch lots of crappie, but sometimes my method is little overwhelming. I do have a question, can you elaborate on your replacement hooks, short or long shank, round bend, 1x 2x, size 4 or 6, front hook back hook? Thanks alot Keep up the good work
#6 short shank Mustad triple grips. Red on front, black on back.
Another great video Mike. FYI...Fred's cranks will run just a bit deeper than the 300's...also, you should get a few of his holographic colors...awesome! My question...do you have any experience with the BnM Pro Trolling Rod? I just got some 8ft'ers. Everyone told me about the amazing backbone these rods have but, to me, they seem to be on the light side...not much backbone at all.
I love my 16 footers.
Like seein that purple/chartreuse have a cameo appearance😀
What size of hook did you use
6
Thanks Mike! Never done cranks before. Very informational video as always. If you ever want some company let me know! 34 years old and would love to learn from you.
Would you take out someone to fish with you
Great info Mike, you answered my question later in the video. Also, did you say what type of line? Braid/mono/flouro?
Mono.
@@MikeBakerVideos thanks again! I had some of my trolling rods rigged with 14 lb Flouro from when I was down trolling for walleye at Bull Shoals last year. Didn't seem to bother the crappie much. Just womder what effect that may have on the depth I can run
@@PFGFishing It will cause the baits to run shallower. How much, I don't know.
@@MikeBakerVideos Isn’t the high vis K-9 a fluoro line?
@@bugtussle7475 I think so.
Hey Mike, I am thinking about purchasing a couple of these rods. What brand/ type of spray paint did you use? Thanks for all of the information
Nothing special. Any type of white or yellow. Will sometimes spray on a primer first but probably not necessary.
great video Mike. How was your trip on Saturday...
Great videos Mike! I really enjoy them. I would be interested to know your set up for shooting and editing your videos. The quality is always top notch!
Sony and GoPro cameras. Final Cut Pro X editing software.
I would love to see some videos on how to catch walleye at the lake the Ozarks
Me too!
Do you ever push crank baits? If you do, I would like for you to do a video on this… thanks
When you throw a line out, how do you keep the lure from turning around in flight and one of the trebles entangling the line? That seems to be a problem for me that I haven’t witnessed in any of your videos. I grew up on cork and minnows and worms and a cane pole. This is all new to me. Your videos help a lot .
It just never seems to be a problem.
What is your favorite FLICKER SHAD size?
The one the fish are eating! Seriously, I experiment with all different sizes.
What kind of line are you using?
K-9
Great video showing your setup and I'm planning to start pulling cranks when the weather allows later this week. I'm interested in those HH reels. Where do you get them?
There is a link to their website in the description section above.
Do you vary the distance from the boat as well as the baits? If so how do you keep track so you can put it back to same distance and depth?
Wondering same? Also, do you just make a good long cast, or do you let line out as well?
I make it simple. I just cast them out as far as I can.
@@MikeBakerVideos Thanks for your videos and all the good intel that goes with them!
@Mike Baker what type of swivel you got in front of those cranks?
How do those rods work with the Off
Shore Planer Boards?
Haven't tried them yet, but soon! I know they will be great with the minis.
When is the time to start pulling cranks water temp air temp ect... Can you catch black and white crappie on them
I generally start right after the spawn when the big ones move off the bank to feed and rest. From there, the hotter the water temp., the better.
You can catch both black and white crappie.
@@MikeBakerVideos Thanks Mr Baker my local lake has more blacks than whites
Do you use the #12 swivel and the snap ring or do you remove the snap ring and just attach crankbait to the swivel?
I use both.
I’m surprised that you don’t use line counter reels.
I do if I need to be precise on the amount of line I let out.
Mike, where did you get your single seat setback you have on your boat?
It is just one arm of a double seat set up.
Hey Mike, what size wiggle wart do you recommend? Thanks
Just the regular size, whatever that is.
Mike is the k9 line the mono or flourocarbon?
Flouro
Have you ever fished wappapello lake in se mo .?
That is where my dad taught me to fish when I was very young. I am from Kennett. Haven’t been back there since I was about 16.
@@MikeBakerVideos that's cool .
Hey Mike who makes the bait tray you use? Where can I get one?
It is home made from a cutting board.
Do you ever use a Tadpole to get them a little deeper when trolling?
Yes.
Yes. Love tadpoles.
If you watch some of his older crankbait videos you'll see him using a Tadpole.
What is the colored tape below reel ¿
To help remember which baits are on which rods. I discuss that in the upcoming sequel video.
@@MikeBakerVideos always learn something useful from you thanks
