  • Manufacturers use a low cost inferior white lithium grease and that just does not hold up. So we show you how to re-pack the bearings you have on your drive pulleys, including the idler pulley, tensioner pulley and so forth. With a little effort, you can make your sealed bearings last a lifetime by using a high-quality SYNTHETIC grease. This Process will also show you how to stop a SQUEAKING pulley to gain some more life out of it.

    About time someone made a video of this. Been doing it for over 50 years. My wife saves any and all syringes for me from the vet etc.. I purchased my first synthetic grease in the early 70's and it lasts pretty much for ever. Why the bearing manufacturers are so cheap with the grease has always puzzled me. They tend to use the cheapest crap they can find. I always do this to new wheel bearings for my Cummins Ram etc as well. Always use the best grease $ can buy.

      Just like light bulbs. If the bulb says it will last 990 hours, it will burn out around 990 hours. Back in the 40's or 50's they figured out if they made the filament thinner it will burn out faster and you will continually have to buy new replacement bulbs. I seen videos of some light bulbs from the early 1900's that have been on for over 100 years and still haven't burnt out yet. They make things to break so you have to buy new ones.

    I have done this with aircraft bearings on high speed industrial equipment for years. It will work to some extent, but usually removing the seals causes small gaps. Depending on what you're using the bearings for, it's sometimes better to just pull and replace it periodically as opposed to trying to lubricate it. However, car parts don't need to be within as close of tolerances as some other parts, so it will work until the bearings are shot. I have a 30 year old Cub cadet lawnmower that has the original bearings in it, and it's been working fine, so there is some merit to this.

    Wow! Did I need this one awhile ago, replaced two idler pulleys on 2 different vehicles as they were noisy, and bought the autoparts replacements (read cheap, even though they charged top dollar for them!) and both are going bad again without that many miles on them!
    Will do this to the replacements, and hopefully they don't get noisy and start bouncing after a short time.

    Thank you, for taking the time to make these videos. The timing is perfect. I'm about to remove/replace the bearings in both of my serpentine belt idler pulleys and the belt tensioner pulley. In fact, I have already ordered the bearings and I'm waiting for delivery. I think I'll try to clean out as much of the factory grease as possible and pack in the new. The pulleys for my car are about $70 each. I can replace the bearings for about $4.00 each. It was an easy decision to make!
    I'm also replacing/treating all of the radiator hoses and serpentine belt with the 303 Protectant you recommended in one of your other videos.
    This is all part of a major maintenance procedure, which involves a new water pump, thermostat, thermostat housing, gaskets and cooling system flush. If the main shaft pulley (damper pulley, harmonic balancer, whatever, etc) shows wear, it will be changed as well.
    Thanks, again!

    I have restored a few old garden tractors. Years ago bearings had a wire snap ring you could remove and the seal would fall out. Clean and re-grease and your good for another 50 years. One thing I do is to remove all the old grease before I fill with new just in case there is contamination and eliminate any compatibility issues with different greases. Good video.

    • @SweetProjectCars
      @SweetProjectCars  6 років тому

      Thank you for the great comment, we have done this for many years and have had no issues with compatibility as the new grease pushes out the old grease well enough to make the bearing last way longer than it normally would.

    if I was doing very many of those I'd put the grease in one of the minny grease guns so that you can squirt it down into the bearing . Your demo is great for someone doing 1 or 2 . thanks for the video , I will be doing it from now on .

    I was taught not to use oil where there is grease. Oil will cause the grease to thin and leak out.

    • @SweetProjectCars
      @SweetProjectCars  6 років тому +8

      The oil is to extend the life of an old bearing that the owner does not want to replace anytime soon, this extends the life without having to remove the pulley thank you very much, and thanks for the great comment, it helps the entire channel :)

    Would it be better to remove the original lube first with some spray cleaner and then directly replace it with new lube like your Mobile1? As I have heard that mixing lubes is bad. Curious

      the heavier grease will take over the bearing and all will work out great we have one vehicle we purchased new now it has 330k miles on it we did this to it brand new off the showroom floor and we opened one of the pulleys up at 165k and it looked awesome still to this day we have never replaced a pulley with 330k on it thanks so much for the great question :)

      It all depends what type of grease it is, clay base or soap based. If you are not sure it's best to clean and use new grease.

    This is a good tip, and we have been doing this for a few years. We use a high temp bearing grease in a grease gun and use a needle to get right inside. Then add a few drops of lucas/moreys and it blends with the grease and makes it sticky so it doesn't get thrown out. Works well.

    Great tip. So simple that everyone should know it and do it but most don't. I've never really thought about greasing a sealed bearing before but I will now. I've used a needle on my grease gun for ball joints and other places that should, but don't have grease fittings on them. Just pull back the boot or put a little hole in it.
    Makes sense to do the same for bearings.
    Thanks for the video.

    I've done this on all sealed bearings. It does work! Any time I've got to replace a sealed bearing like on a auto or mower I pack em full of grease. It really pays off to do this on mower deck spindles. Also the syringe trick is good to lubricate the factor front end parts such as the upper and lower ball joints and tie rods. Most of them are sealed. The replacements have a grease fitting on em. The sealed ones do not. I like this guy's videos.

    There's no better feeling than extending the life of a component on your car knowing that your money stays in our pockets instead of the greedy car manufacturers and parts store's pockets. A bonus is it's good for the environment because no part needs to be built that requires using money/fuel to mine the metal to make the part, oil to make the plastic portion of it...fuel to deliver the part to your doorstep or parts store and the old part doesn't get chucked into the garbage then the landfill. Some people recycle the parts but still it takes fuel to transport to the recycler, and fuel to melt the metal down to make something else out of it.
    I'm going to try the oil injection into the idler pully but going to see if I can squeeze some 5-30 synthetic through the needle. I've already pumped some CRC grease into my tie rod ends and ball joints using a grease gun equipped with a needle. Then sealed the tiny hole with super glue and after it dried a layer of blue silicone adhesive over that. Great results so far. Thanks for the tips...

    I thought for sure, you were going to soak the seal in 303 rubber treatment! Might actually work, I agree with you on the cheap grease! the second I always thought it was the seal failing that let dirt in that killed the bearing!

    I've had problems when I over packed bearings, excessive friction, leaks, oozing melted grease. So far I've re packed inline skates, eccentric bearings on sanders, grinder bearings etc. Love having a tool work and work without breakdown., especially tools that are not made well anymore. My Austrian random orbit sander goes through hell and back, ten years of service and still kicking.
