Panasonic Lumix GH7 Is Great, But Micro Four Thirds Still Need a PROPER Lumix GX Camera

  • This is not a review of the new Panasonic Lumix GH7 Micro Four Thirds camera, but rather just a little reaction of what I think about the GH7, as well as my hope for the future Lumix camera. We definitely need a proper GX series camera, with new sensor and PDAF, IBIS, fully articulating with new tilt mechanism screen, microphone jack, adequate manual control, adequate video capabilities, and most definitely a reasonable price! Hopefully we'll get that camera soon. Meanwhile, I think the GH7 is a fantastic camera for its target market, and hopefully it will sell well and will continue to push Micro Four Thirds developments in the future.

    Exactly. We need a compact camera that is designed for still photos. Not everyone want to make high quality movies. I would just use my phone for video.

      Ya I'd love a new small camera. I do use video but no need for prores, no need for the fan as I just need a few minute video clips., 1 SD slot is enough. Can't believe they made the s9 full frame and not M43....

    I think a GX with phase detect autofocus, decent IBIS, 4k60 and weather sealing (both on the camera and in updated versions of compact lenses) using the new sensors would do pretty well. If the viewfinder, screen and controls were top-end, it would do very well. Here's hoping!

      About four years ago I bought my GX9 at a very good price brand new. I got the feeling that the shop just wanted to get rid of this 'old' model. Then the small camera buzz started. Now I think I could sell my almost four year old camera for twice as much as I bought it for! Crazy.
      I think Pany released the G100 for the small camera segment. What they fail to understand is that camera has less features than the GX9 and, most importantly, in my opinion, the G100 has no 'soul'. It looks like a tool. As with the X100, cameras that look and feel great are the ones you want to buy and use.

    Any M43 camera release is great news for our community. And it seems that the GH7 is going to be the camera that will silence the doomsayers about the M43 format for the moment. I don't think Panasonic will release a new GX camera anytime soon, as we already had the G9ii last autumn and now we have the GH7. I get the feeling that Panasonic were hoping that the S9 might replace the GX series (a clue in the number of the camera S"9"!), but, as we know, that camera was a bust (and hence the quick follow-up release of the GH7 to save face). Maybe next year we'll see a GX9ii/GX10, which is what the S9 should have been in the first place.

    • @davidmccarthy6061

      I think Panasonic was hoping to move us up the price scale and doing that automatically reduces the sales potential. Us enthusiasts far out number the pros but we don't have the will or budget to spend big bucks on a big jump up, or see the need to spend money on less significant incremental changes. They haven't found the sweet spot yet but a GX10, if correctly spec'ed and priced, would do it.

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  3 місяці тому

      Agree with what you said regarding GH7.
      I don't think the S9 is a complete bust. It may not satisfy the photography community requirements, but younger people with little to no prior camera experience seem to be interested in the S9.
      Not confirmed though, the S9 is hardly available anywhere nearby where I live right now, so I don't know about the sales number.
      But yeah, there is still possibility of them scratching the GX series in favor of the S9 or other full frame series 😢

    Yesss!! I own a gx85. But what me and many other been demanding for a long time is a GX10 with PDAF. 25 MP sensor. Definitely fully weather sealed becoz its going to be my everyday carry cam, good res viewfinder( no need for the tilty one), Real time LUT and lumix lab support for fun colour experimentation. In cam raw editor with more editing options, A BAZEL-LESS DISPLAY!! Smartphones have reached lightyears ahead with good quality display with tiny side bazels and even no bazels at all, but we still got displays with bazels taking up so much of real estate.why no one is taking about it. If smartphones can do it, definitely cameras can do it. Live digital ND like olympus cameras. Computational photography is the future. Live viewable compositing for long exposure. Advanced In cam double exposure. Good in cam HDR photo. No need for high end video specs. Just 4k60 will do enough. If they can do a 4k 120 even for just a full minute, it will be enough for covering action. I don't think anyone takes 4k120 shots more than that duration other than movies. A mic input offcourse. Built in flash. But still compact as possible. But please don't omitt an evf and mic jack for a few mm of size. A good grip with thump placement is necessary.
    Asking all this is too much to come under 1000 dollars maybe. But possible by lumix.if not, make a cheap varient omiting some functions like what gx85 was to gx8.

    Been saying it for months, will keep saying it until we see it (or something like it) GX9II - with GX9II sensor phase detect, swap the ports to the left (and change it to two USBC with at least one being Thunderbolt) allowing to power of a battery bank and support a external monitor/recorder/recording to SSD, flippy screen (yes I know that will make it a bit more thicc) bluetooth mic and headphones and give it better video capacities - maybe something like the S9 or just short of it - even if it's just 10 to 15 min of 4k 120fps ~30 at 24fps or open gate, and 32bit float audio for run and gun social media video
    I have full frame, APS and MFT and the real selling point of MFT is its lenses - both the insane range and the compactness relative to other formats - fore example no APS or full 35mm sensor format can do a ~24-70 or 70-200 2.8 that even comes close to the compactness and light weight of Panasonics (wanna see my R8 with the RF 70-200, the R8 may only weigh 11 grams more than my GX9 (461g vs 450g with batteries) but stick the 70-200 2.8 and the 35-100 2.8 and its 1.531Kg v's 810g or almost twice the weight with Canon's lightest full frame body and to be fairer even if we go with the 70-200 F/4 (a lens I own) it's still 1.156kg v's 810g and it's still much bulkier than my GX9+35-100 2.8

      Forget the flippy screen. The GX9 was a photography centered camera with video features. I want a tilting screen. For me, I don’t need many video features. 4K is alright but don’t need more than 30. I don’t need long form video. I only do clips. 10’ limit is OK. We already have several bodies with video options. Give it a rest.
      Loose the tilting EVF. Who uses that? Keep the body small and light. Just a few updates for the GX9, such as PDAF and I’m in. Also, keep the price to no more than $1200.

      @@martingreenberg870 dropping video features is kind of pointless these days, for the most part its features that are inherently there but crippled to not compete with more expensive/profitable per unit video centric units, us old fart photo centric buyers may compline but we're not the future camera gear demographic any company would be wanting to catch and hold. Even the Fuji X100 has evolved from a single minded photo centric unit in to reasonably competent hybrid camera due to demand.

    Nice to dream but really unrealistic to expect G9ii features in a smaller body at half the price. It would undercut it's flagship models. Expect about $1,200 for a camera like this in 2024. I think this is exactly why Panny has been hesitant to release a camera like this. People expect because the cam is smaller, that it must also have smaller price. A GX10 would be great but get real with expectations. Either lower price with stripped features. Or higher price with more features.

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  3 місяці тому

      I don't really need G9ii features to be honest. What I need is a GX9 with audio input, screen that could tilt and swivel, and newer PDAF sensor, with price that won't exceed US$1000. Or even a G100 with IBIS and that new PDAF sensor. G9ii does have plenty of advanced features that don't really make sense if added into smaller camera body.

      Okay, maybe not under 800, but under 900 it's extremely possible. My good old Lumix G85 was priced US$900 with a kit lens, brand new.

    After all, there is already a Lumix g 100D

      The Lumix G100 is almost perfect, it just needs IBIS, and that new PDAF sensor. If the G100 successor features both of those features, I think I will get it.

    Just speak for yourself. I dont want a gx cam. To me the gh series is what lumix is all about

      Fair enough, not everybody wants a GX series cam. Cheers

    too expensive, too heavy, too big, needs mic input, needs slow motion w/no crop. great camera but but wrong direction for MFT. All the advantages are kinda gone. Sony FF can use APS-C lenses with adapter for less money and weight.

      True. I just bought a used Sony A7C for $900. The used 35/2.8 was $220. A nice, capable, affordable, small & lightweight bit of kit.

    Tu vuoi, il sensore nuovo, l'AF nuovo, più stabilizzazione, il jack audio, e averla allo stesso prezzo della gx80? Ma sei serio????? Il video "pro Gx10" più no-sense di tutto YT.

      You are right. This will never sell for $800. That train has pulled out of the station. Lose the ridiculous tilting EVF. Maybe $999?

      @@martingreenberg870 It depends on what they put on. Let's imagine a "recycled" GX10 with all the HW and SW that Pana already has:
      - the S5's 2.36M-dot OLED EVF which is considered bad for a camera like the S5 but could do just fine for a GX10;
      - 25mpx sensor from the G9ii;
      - AF? Big question mark. Pana's CEO said that not all future cameras will have the phase system. A GX10 could actually still adopt the old DFD system, perhaps from the G9, which would be great for a compact and "street" camera. There would be an increase in AF areas from 49 to 225 and certainly higher precision compared to GX9;
      - Hi-res? For me yes, maybe even just at 50mpx;
      - Computational functions such as "Live composite";
      - Install the LUTs as on S9;
      - Tiltable screen with higher resolution and better readability in the sun than that of the GX9.
      In my opinion 1100-1200.00 euros for the body only.

      It is possible, the G85 was priced US$900 brand new with a kit lens. All they need to do is just to put it into a smaller body, lose the weather sealing, lose the kit lens, and change the sensor.
