Ben in 1963 at the age of 15 the ATC I was a member of went to RAF Linton-on-Ouse (IATA: HRT, ICAO: EGXU) near York. The base commander was from Lowestoft Suffolk, where we were from, and after every Cadet had been given a flight in the Chipmunk I was the only cadet on base (others went swimming) he asked if I would like to go up again for an hour, well of course I said yes. Once airborne he allowed me to take the controls, so that was my first aircraft I officially took control of. One thing I have never forgotten as we flew back to base and on the way he tipped the Right Wing down and said "That's my cottage down there and that's the wife hanging the washing out" Your video has brought that all back. Your channel is one I love because you are Professional in your flying, and as someone who worked in the Film Industry (Location Projectionist) your videos are of the Highest Quality. Look forward to the next flight. 🛩

The chipmunk was the first plane Ive ever had the experience of trying to fly. Based at RAF Honington many years ago during a visit with Air cadets. Lovely plane .

Ben. As someone who aspired to be a fast jet pilot but had to drop out of Cranwell after discovering a problem with my eyes, your videos brin* back so many wonderful memories of flight training and learning the trade. I flew Chipmunks in the ATC, and later bulldogs, huskies and the wonderful Jet Provost as I moved through my training. Never got to the Hawk at Valley sadly. My days of flying are long past but I am reliving it now through your channel. Thank you so much. You are an inspiration to a new generation of fliers.

Apply full rudder and set 2 clicks of brake. Taxy off the peri track , onto the grass at 45 degrees , stick fully back, slowly to minimise risk of tipping onto the nose.
If you wear a bone dome, be careful not to get the hood flap release wire trapped under a rivet....you'll feel more than stupid if your head gets stuck at 90 degrees to the direction of flight 😈
Mixture, Fuel, Flaps, Hood, Harness, Brakes....downwind checks. ( Carb Heat wired in hot....all the time ?? )
    Overshoot checks....forgotten them :(
Engine starting.....clearly not cartridge....Bang..Cockpit full of smoke , the whole panel shakes like hell, and when the smoke clears , all settles down. Idle at 1100rpm ? to avoid plug fouling.
Great video. Great landings. Hotel 52 out. (EMUAS 70, 71)

Its amazing how robust the chipmunk is. Recently saw a video of a chippy hitting a short radio tower with right wing tip. Lost about a foot of the wing but footage then shows massive damage at wing root and fuselage - yet is stayed together!!

Very enjoyable. Brought back memories! I checked out in our Chippy G-BCSL in 1979 at Barton immediately after doing my PPL on C150s there. Had a share in SL for over 30 years of fabulous Chipmunk flying , stopping only a few years ago. It's an aeroplane you strap on. I wrote a few articles over the years in 'Pilot' about it. Just one point - I found it best to have no brake set at all on T/O and landing (but I might have done way back on checking out - can't remember!). I preferred a completely unrestricted rudder. In the unlikely event that you reach full rudder and you need more, you can drop your LH to the brake lever and give it a tweak! Never ground looped in almost 35 years of Chippying so it worked for me!

Great that - loved every second of it. Makes me regret I ducked out of a Chipmunk flight when I was in the air cadets - strangely it appeared absurdly anachronistic in 1974 - whereas now it just looks what it is - a classic tail dragging aircraft powered by a classic British light aircraft engine.

Another ex ATC cadet here (479 Sqdn Birmingham), remember flying in chippies at RAF Shawbury, Shropshire in the 70's..like others I still have the memories, says a lot for the aeroplane so many people remember it.....it just 'looks like a real aeroplane'!

Hi, I learned to fly on the Chippy. I was with B'ham Uni Air Squadron a bit before your flights, mine were in 1960 when I was19! I think the UBAS was dismantled and then the planes were used for ATC. Because Air Squadrons were really used for recruitment, I was offered an aircrew job in the RAF, but eyesight not good enough for the fast jets...Ah well, had a great time and 140 hrs solo.

Hi Ben. Brilliant aircraft, one England's finest. My father flew his in the King's Cup air race in the late 1960's. He flew many types but I think flying the de Havilland Chipmunk was his favourite. It's a very special aircraft, many foreign air forces used them for training, including Thailand, proving their design, reliability and durability were second to none.

Great video Ben! Thanks to you and your brilliant Instructor for putting it together. It brought back lots of memories. I flew my first Chippie T10 as an ATC cadet, and it was the first powered aircraft I soloed in while I was at the University Air Squadron. It was great to fly, but it had some vices as you pointed out. I managed to avoid ground-looping, but the landing phase of my training was interesting at times! I'm amazed the RAF let us 18 year olds loose with this aircraft!

It was so great to see your recording & so well chopped between multiple cameras! (I'm sure I will revisit this several times) I consider myself so lucky to have had my first flightat 15 with the ATC (402 Sq) in a Chipmunk from Manston & we flew over the White cliffs of Dover; something I will never forget. Ha ha, no, it just flies so slow it feels likes it's going anti-clockwise..! (The ASI is marked 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 - up to 20, clockwise - this is tens of knots and massively optimistic about the top speed).

I flew in one as a cadet at 14 years old as RAF Shawbury, amazing flight where I got to take the stick and make it do a loop! Maybe someone can confirm my memory, I remember being told to move the stick down to 120 knots and then pull up to make the loop? Is this correct? It was 40 years ago!! - I also got to go up a Wessex Helicopter as well but that was boring in comparison!
