At the time Charles was not in the RAF but was a student at Cambridge University he was a member of the University Air Squadron when he took flying lessons in this aircraft.

Was taken up in one of these as a young teenager ATC cadet in the 1980’s. Had to wear a parachute and before the flight we watched a film on how to bail out. Did a loop and roll without needing the sick bag. A great experience.

I was in the ATC from 1988 until I joined the Armed Forces in 1995, fantastic times. The ATC had a huge positive effect on my life! Loved the Chipmunk, such a Second World War feel about it, although obviously far less power than a Spitfire LOL. I left just before the Chippy was phased out and replaced by the Scottish Aviation Bulldog and later the Grob Tutor. I'm SO glad that I got to experience the Chipmunk rather than the other two types!

Chipmunks are great - makes you feel like you get a little scent of WWII flying, compared to land-o-matic tricycle gear Cessnas etc. And then that classic smell...

Gp. Capt. Pinney was so proud of his special trainee "pilot" that he accompanied him on his qualifying solo flight for his wings. 😉

The Chippy is a great old bird, however it needs decent toe brakes and a better engine otherwise it is a pleasure to fly if you like going that slow.

He started from there Yes, and flew his first solo from Bassingbourn due to crosswind limitations. He went on to continue training with flights in the same chipmunk in Scotland and Wales.

This Chipmunk had been mothballed after Prince Phillip learned to fly in it. The Provosts which Charles trained on to get his wings, were PERFECT. No “concessions “ were allowed when they were manufactured at BAC Preston/Warton and the engines were brand new from Rolls Royce , not the overhauled engines being fitted. From that I conclude that this Chipmunk was also very special. I believe they were nicknamed Golden Budgies.
The jolly hockey sticks retired senior officer who trained Charles should be asked about his lack of skill and judgment in his disastrous landing in Scotland in a 146 ….which he wasn’t trained for.

It's a Canadian design. The RCAF phased them out in the 1960s with the demise of "tail dragger" aircraft in favour of planes with tricycle landing gear like those on all of the other aircraft the pilots would encounter in their service.

@@abrahamdozer6273 Yup it was and is a great aircraft. I understand the RAF regretted “all jet “ basic training on the Provost. In particular the nonsense that use of the rudder was unnecessary…..until you lose an engine at V1 on a multi engine aircraft and then if you don’t use your feet, you’re dead. I believe there is still a place for more chipmunks , as a low cost well proven , basic trainer to teach the skills which all pilots need.

@@abrahamdozer6273 There's something to be said for learning on both types as they require slightly different skill sets.
The RAF replaced them with Bulldogs in the 70's; though many were retained for cadet use and for experience flights.
