Really, really great video. Thank you for taking the time to make this. FF9 was a defining game for me growing up but I tried to play it recently and it hasn't aged well. I had no idea about Moguri Mod and that it was this easy to get running on the Steam Deck. Followed this step-by-step and can't wait to play through this iconic game again for the first time in 20+ years.
@1:07 if you want to get direct to the tutorial part Just a note, we got a new kitten in the house and apparently the mic is super sensitive to her bell lol. I couldn't remove it all in post so figured I would leave it in, so if you hear a ding a ling and can't figure out where it's from, that's why lol.
Glad it helped. Still waiting on an update to come out, they were talking about one for end of the year but it might get pushed back to Q1 next year, was going to house a few updates to the launcher part and a couple more things to mod. Whenever I see that drop I'll probably make a new video if the process changes for install
Yo dude, just wanna say. You are one amazing human being. I cant express how happy I am with this mod for one of the best JRPG of our time. Please keep making vids like this one!
Yes it will work with alternate fantasy, but be aware alternate fantasy doesn't work with some others so if you go mixing more that could be a problem, but these two do work together. I will have to go back and try to see if order matters, on my PC I did Moguri and then alternate and it worked, but realistically you're grabbing both from the same place at the same time now
Awesome. 1 issue I am having, is once I launch in game mode, I have to swap the co triller layout for mouse, to get past the mod page, then back to controller... any good workaround?
Just curious, is there a specific reason you did it this way? I just ran the terminal command listed on the mod site in the konsole and it literally installed everything. All you need to do is copy paste one command line. Not hating or anything, but it was significantly easier.
@@Mubiki that wasn't a thing the first time I did this so when I did it second time for the video I never even knew to look for it lol, looks like they are really starting to support steam deck though, it used to be even more involved than this in the past, back then this video would have been the easy version lol. Good catch though, will for sure check there once the 9.x patch they've been rumoring drops.
@@chompdoesathing Ah, that makes sense. I just did it for the first time yesterday and had never visited the page before that. I was actually following your tutorial and it was going great, when I noticed that option and decided to try it quick based on previous experience modding via Linux. I think it is awesome they are supporting it as well. I really think a lot of people are going to steam deck for these types of games so hopefully other modding communities wisen up.
Quick Question - i have followed the video all correctly and now have the Mod Installer / Manager Screen but its not letting me tick any of the options? Any suggestions? Edit: ive also noticed when starting up the game there is no volume?
OK for the sound one I have no idea... Tried to get that to happen on mine but couldn't get that. As for the not being able to tick boxes, are you trying in desktop mode or in game/play mode? In play mode I think by default you have to use the touch screen on the mod manager, might have to tap around a bit because it's super tiny like that lol. I would suggest you try to setup the mod manager in desktop mode where mouse functions are already mapped to the controller and once you get it how you want it THEN you jump back to game mode. That being said, you can enable the right track pad to work as a mouse even when in game mode which I just tried out and it let me check and uncheck boxes easier (or seems easier than tapping lol) so that could be an option for ya. * To do that, launch game from the game mode like you normally would. * Once the mod manager pops up, hit the steam button to bring up the left bar * FINAL FANTASY 9 > (down to) Controller Settings > (should have a picture of the deck and buttons) Click A -(on mine it brings up an option to browse the workshop, hit B to not do that) -(this should now have a screen where it says Current Button Layout) * Click Edit Layout * Scroll Down to Track Pads * Change Right Trackpad behavior to "As Mouse" * (Under that) Change "Click (R)" to "Left Mouse Click" * Keep hitting back until you get back to the game/mod manager * Right trackpad should now move the mouse, and pushing the pad should left click so that should solve that issue for you
OK I think I figured out another thing you might have done (at least on the clicking boxes part). When you did compatibility mode, that was only for the patcher which you added as a non steam game. If you run FF9 itself in that compatibility mode proton 7.0-6 (or maybe others) then it does break the mod manager and it wouldn't let me click any of the boxes so maybe that's what happened? Patcher non-steam game > compatibility mode FF9, patched or unpatched > NO compatibility mode Still haven't been able to break the audio though... only thing I can think of is check your deck settings to make sure you aren't actually connected to bluetooth or something? Can't seem to come up with anything for that one lol
@@chompdoesathing honestly, thank you so much for such a detailed reply bud! Will try this when I am home! Appreciate it big time buddy! Will spread the word for this channel 👍🏼
@@chompdoesathing it's worked! Your suggestions were bang on! If anyone asks about the volume in the future it looks like it got muted / can sometimes be automatically muted in Desktop Mode! Simply start up the game in Desktop Mode > Select Volume in the task bar > Go across to Applications > Unmute! So relieved 😂 Thanks once again bud
You downloaded a fresh one, placed it in the same folder as FF9, added it as a non steam game, and ran the patcher in compatibility mode 7.0-6, in that order?
So I went back and deleted my setup and tried again a few times, I couldn't find a way to recreate that error. Even running it from the downloads or a wrong folder didn't get me that, tried using a wrong version of proton (which did work still lol), I can't seem to recreate that error. Only thing I could think of would be to start over fresh and follow each step 1 by one through the video. Beyond that I'm not sure, I redid this process probably 10 times now including when making the video and coming up with a script and idea, haven't been able to break it going forward, unless you had some weird mods or changes to steam I couldn't account for. Sorry man, I tried to break it lol
@@chompdoesathingappreciate the comment very much. I was getting that error before watching your video already so I’m gonna do step by step from the beginning.
@@Ggggions only thing else I would say is if you need to fully delete FF9 using the uninstall from steam won't do it, you need to go to the folder in desktop mode and send it to the trash as well. I think that will nuke your save so you might want to look into manually backing up the save if that matters but if trying to troubleshoot it might help to nuke it and start at absolute zero lol. Good Luck!
Well that's odd lol, the shaders should be part of the memeoria engine I believe (the mod manager is technically an addition on top of a whole new base engine, that's what let's the mods work better/properly). I can't think of what would be a good fix for that besides starting the whole process over but just make sure you try and backup your save first. You could maybe retry just the part with downloading and moving and running the patcher? Not sure on that one
On the models? In the part with the shaders you can just not run them if you like the brighter original look. When I first did it I actually leaned more towards the realistic options but toon took over pretty quick lol

I installed the memoria patcher just like you did but when I start the game is does not open the mod manager, just just goes straight into the game
A question? Works with alternate fantasy mod? "Which one should I install first?"
