Sounds like to me you’re doing this from the heart. That tells me you’re happy content and building some of the best downhill bikes on the market. Money is cool that’s for sure but challenging yourself in life is even cooler. Next year is the 65 and over national championship downhill for me been doing this since 91. Haven’t seen a full suspension steel bike designed like yours that’s an incredible design I got to go check your website out. Just subscribe to your channel so looking forward to more super cool content happy trails young man.
hell yeahhhhhh Burf!! Awesome video dude so great to hear the whole backstory behind BTR and what you've gone through to get where you are. Loved seeing some old skool PORC footage and Alvar too. I remember reading those dirt reviews and being stoked for ya. And you're gonna be off to Schladming that's such an og DH track! Looking forward to the next one dude much love!!
Just finished a project myself. Took 2 years though and I don't have any software for stress calculations, so testing will be fun 😂. I've seen one of your frames in the flesh and it was neck and neck with the nicolai nucleon udh as the finest looking bike and engineering I've ever seen. Can't wait to see your dh complete and hope you get as much satisfaction from riding your own bike as i do riding mine.
So good hearing the BTR backstory - what a ride! Been lusting after a Ranger for years but haven’t had the cash to splash - one day! Keep building and shredding, looking forward to the Schladming vid🤘
Back in the day when I was making bags I sent countless emails to all the main websites trying to get them to review stuff and it always fell on deaf ears, despite being at Bespoked for a few years on the trot, felt like unless you knew someone you were outta luck to get something reviewed. Not sure if that's worse than putting out a frame you were totally chuffed with and getting a crap review though! Anyway loving this series, looking forward to the next one.
Feeling your pain on those “make or break” magazine reviews. The comparison with taking a shit was priceless 🤣🤣🤣🤣👌 Awesome to find out more about the backstory and history of BTR and the Pinner
Call me crazy. But please hear me out. I love steel. I love the compliant feel (To an extent.) and the resistance to cracking. All of it. But I dislike the look of a traditionally designed steel frame. So I made my own DH bike. The foundation of the project was a three foot piece of straight gauge 1 3/4" x .049" chromoly tubing from Aircraft Spruce for the down tube. I think my original drawing says Atherton style as they were early adaptors of what we now call modern geometry. It has a 62.5 degree HA and a 76 degree SA and gets 240mm of travel via a Santa Cruz gen 2 Bullit swing arm with a 420mm chain stay. (I have a background in trials and am short rear end for life. I'll take quick turning over stability any day.) It has a softer feel than any alloy or carbon frame but is still rock solid in any situation. And looks WAY better than a traditionally engineered steel frame. I squished it vertically at the head tube and horizontally at the BB to make it play nice for welding. I highly recommend going bigger than tradition, if only for your more aggressive or plus sized clients. For the record I'm 2 meters and 200 lbs. It was my last of four frames that I made for myself. Google DirtMag Big Bird's Bike to see the article about them all.
Yeah, you're definitely crazy. Who would love steel!? I had a look for your bikes on dirt but nothing came back on Google. I don't think the old site has much of the back catalogue, I had a look for some of my stuff for this video and couldn't find it. I'm no search engine expert, though. Short chainstays are definitely the one, you are right.
Thanks mate! We used to write a big list of names we thought were cool and then chose the one we liked the best. Choosing a name for the first few frames seemed super daunting and important but these days I'm not so bothered, it doesn't really make that much difference.
I didn't think you were hating. Bad joke I guess. Everything I needed to build that one frame cost me £4k. Frame design, linkage machining, laser cutting, pivot boss machining, 6m lengths of 4130 for the swingarm (that was the shortest I could get, and I only needed around 200mm of each). I needed some bend dies made to bend the seat-tube. Before I started building frames I also thought it was just a few tubes stuck together. How hard couldn't be, right? Sometimes I wish I never started 🤣
Loved the vid Burf, worked with Tam back in the day and was in awe of you guys starting up your own bike company. your passion really shows through, serious props man! one day il afford a Pinner!
Lookforwards to more of the story perhaps a "Patreaon or Buy me a Coffee" may stem the Bleeding of Funds ? Suggestion ? South African looking at the idea of getting into the Fabrication game, Supper stoked to hear its a rough ride and not all Sunshine and Daisies. Lookforwards to learning from ya Mate 🫡
Howzit my bru! I'm from S.A. originally, been in the U.K. a long old time, though. I have considered doing a donation type thing but it feels awkward filming that. Even more awkward than filming these talky bits 🫣. Fabrication is great, being able to make stuff out of bits of old metal laying around is so handy. Hard to make bank doing it, though.
Nice to know the history of BTR. Looking forward to the next one
Thanks mate. I best get back in the editing suite 🥵
“The passion for building bikes was too strong” yer boi.
🍻
thank you for the video and the interesting insides. I am looking forward to the coming videos
Thanks Harry
Can't wait for the rest of this build series 👊
Bang tidy. Thanks mate.
Well done Burf 🙌
Nice one lad 🍻
Great history video- really looking forward to the series!!
Rad, thanks mate!
Super cool Video, I am just building bikes for my self but I know the struggels and how much work goes into a frame. Big respect for you
Thanks mate. Stoked to hear you're building frames for fun. Keep at it
Dude. You’re drive and skill are at levels only a fraction of folks are capable and willing to accomplish. Happy Trails.
Amazing, thanks mate 🍻
Now, if only I could make a some money with them skills...

Making bikes is hard work. Selling bikes is even harder! Great video, I’m subscribed!
Awesome, thanks mate!
Ace to hear the story and keen to see more! Oh the Pinner.. what a time that was
Ah mate, thanks for watching!
Such a good story. Ready for the rest
Rad, thanks mate. The second video should be up already but my computer died the other day. Waiting on a replacement so I can finish the edit.

Proper nuts you got bro. Mental. Don’t quit plzzzz… hope you will be rewarded one day🤘
Ha ha thanks bro. I'll keep chugging away for now
Miss the old Porc days racing. Get that bike done and ride it Burf. Nice little homage to that legend Alva 😂 Made the races that more fun.
Yeah I miss them so bad, too. Alvar is always a good laugh to be around
Great film!, amazing bikes and class riding footage!
your hard work and passion is reflected in the frames for sure
Respect
Thanks mate, appreciate that 🍻
Looking forward to the vid of you shredding it! 🔥🔥🔥👊🏻

Ah mate, thanks for the kind words. Best of luck with your bike. FEA is great but only as good as the numbers you put in, which is an art in itself.
Amazing bike!
You're amazing!
This is great 👍
Thanks! You're great, too.

Yes yes, this is great mate.

What kind of Software did you use to design the frames? I Wolldecke asume some Kind of cad program. Keep it up man. Love the content.❤
I use fusion 360. Thanks ks mate 🍻
great atch
Cheers dude 🍻
How do you test the stress on the frames
Using computer simulation and previous experience it's possible to build something capable.
What Kind of Software did you use? Keep it up cheers🎉
I used Fusion 360 for the CAD and Davinci Resolve for the editing.
@@BTR-Fabrications thanks 👍

Does it really cost £4k to but frame tubes & materials?!
Nah. I 100% made that up just for a laugh.

Story would be more interesting if you had any choice in the matter. Sendy framebuilding esoteraestheticism is your destiny. 😂
