I think what hurt Spirits Within was that the writers tried to jam far too much narrative into too little runtime. It's as if the original script was _much_ longer and got whittled down into something that shown fragments of those bigger ideas that just weren't given enough time to really flush them out properly. It might have been better as a two or even three movie series, but that's sadly wishful thinking now.
